The DM made a decision. If the players respect the DM, they abide by that decision. If they don't respect the DM, they come at the DM with "important information". There is no middle ground.
There is always a middle ground if you treat people respectfully instead of assuming your way is always right. Sounds like the OP is working with his DM to find the middle ground

Especially when new information comes up after the decision that would have been relevant to how the decision was made had it been known beforehand.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
