For context I was the DM in a eberron one shot with just one other player (my bro). My brother was playing a warforged artificer called dent. Dent got a lead on a missing person case at a warforged bar called the brass boiler. He had recently got kicked out of the bar due to offending the barkeeper so he had to be stealthy. He drank a potion of invisibility to sneak past the security. He wanted to investigate the back of the bar for suspicious activity. To make it to the back he needed to cause a distraction for the barkeeper. He said he would throw a bottle of alcohol on the ground behind him but he wasn't done he wanted to use his Eldritch cannon (flamethrower) to light the alcohol on fire. Apparently he forgot about area of effects because the barkeeper was ten feet in front of him. I told him to make a attack roll. Nat 1. He accidentally kill the barkeeper and light the kegs on fire in front of him ultimately burning the entire bar. This is my best plan failed successfully story.
Back when we were teens. We were doing Criticals in 1e before it was rule. We also did Fumbles, which were Nat 1's. In which case you did no more than dropped your weapon or slipped. Can't remember if any spells were affected since I don't remember many spells that were ranged attack, like in 5e.
I've never actually played 1e but heard some cool things about it (like paladins summoning a mighty steed). I would like to learn different ttrpgs like pathfinder and city of mist. As well as older versions of d&d.
