We all know that backgrounds have been redesigned to have a feat and now are where the ability scores are located(honestly it still being on races woulda been better), and most of the old backgrounds will be absolete, but what about the backgrounds from recent settings we got, such as strixhaven or glory of the giants ? Those backgrounds kind of work like the new ones granting a feat or even an expanded spell list, but they are not fully compatible with the new phb since they dont give you ability score increases. Do they plan to release a guide on how to adjust older backgrounds? Or will they just say to DMs have figure it out?
But that wouldnt excactly mesh well with what they are going for with the new races and backgrounds,as in limiting stat selection again but this time it being within the background instead, and Strixhaven/bibgis/spelljammer etc are funadamentaly diferent from the 2014 backgroudns which had no feats in them
All of this should be really easy to make work. If you want a background which does not have a feat or ASI, use that background, add a feat as well, add your ASI. If you want a background which has a feat but no ASI, add your ASI. There might be some hiccups with how that is implemented in D&D Beyond, but changing your ASI and adding additional feats is really easy to do on your character sheet.
Right now, everything seems like it is flux and people are understandably confused - I expect a lot of that confusion will go away when the books release. Best case, the 2024 handbook gives great instructions on how to enact compatibility. Worst case, it seems like there will be easy, common sense solutions to every question of compatibility raised thus far. I presume this will be one of those instances where folks are overthinking things prior to the official release, but will be figuring everything out with relative ease come September.
Creating Characters with the 2024 Player's Handbook and Older Player Options
For returning players, the 2024 Player’s Handbook includes guidelines for building characters using backgrounds and species from older books, in case you want to mix and match the player options you’ve long enjoyed with the revised rules presented in the new core rulebook.

This was covered in TCoE and MotM
That is to say that if you are using 2014 Backgrounds then you have the 2014 rules for modifying stats as well.

Yes, as stated, there will be a sidebar in the PHB which explains in detail how all this works. But it really isn't that complicated an issue anyway.
