Hello. So I was wondering if anybody has any ideas on how to improve on the subclass for Blood Hunter. My blood hunter character is sort of my "main" and I've been wondering on ways to improve the subclass I've chosen.
My main gripe is that we only get 2 spell slots. I understand that it's a subclass that's an offshoot of the warlock class which only gets 4 slots. The issue is that warlocks get invocations and mystic arcanums which expand their oppurtunities to cast spells. We don't even get the expanded spell list of our patron and our revealed arcana and mystic arcanum is chosen for us. Warlocks also get more oppurtunities to regain slots. I feel that bare minimum we should also have 4 spell slots. I'm always hesitant to cast spells because of how limited my resources are, which sucks. I want to swing swords and cast spells and not be a boring fighter class instead. Looking around, I've seen some reworks of the subclass include invocations, but I think it's a bit redundant since we have curses. Which also I'm looking around for homebrew blood curses because the set list we have is a tad bit lacking for me. Mystic frenzy is ok, but since I dual wield it sort of sucks, but that's only because of the fighting style I chose. I believe that the player should have been able to choose the spell for revealed and mystic arcanum, but realisitically I would have just chosen scorching ray and fireball anyways.
Everything else I think is ok, but I'd be open to more ideas. One idea that I've been running with is that I can amplify my spells the way I do my curses. Pretty much all of my spell are homebrew, (in actuallity they are just copies of established spells flavored the way I like eg hunger of hadar is asmodean shroud which does fire and necrotic instead.) I'd also experimented with the idea of being able to amplify a spell multiple times at once. Every time I amplify summon greater demon, I can increase the CR by 1. All the cooler demons are at a higher level and I wanted to be able to get to them. Ofcourse for balance I can only amplify a specific spell once per long rest. I also am intrested in spells in where when you amplify the spell, it changes the functionality of the spell. A spell I have called Demonic Lashing (taken from the wonderful homebrew book Howl to Ruin by Conflux Creatures) where if I amplify the spell instead of giving the target fear I can instead restrain the target for 1 min, but I have to take all my subsequent actions holding the target. Stuff where spells don't just do damage in a sphere or give debuffs/buffs. They have flexibility to change the tempo or positioning of the fight if they want.
This class is my favorite since it has so much flavor and I love the risk/reward system it's got. I'd really like to find a way to make it a bit better. So any ideas?
Personally I'd agree with the player. While the patron is giving the BH pact magic, they aren't getting invocations, a pact, or anything else the warlock gets. Maybe the patron made a deal with the BH order as a whole and its power is being shared by all of the members, explaining why they have fewer warlock features than a pure warlock. https://omegle****/
