It would be nice if the subclass feature, Elemental Cleaver, would have that damage rolled just like sneak attack damage. I had to make a homebrew weapon to achieve this and the elemental cleaver part won't scale as I level so I will have to remember to edit it. Using Roll20 vtt.
Just played a game with wights and just made lvl 6. I ran into the same problem, ending up “wasting” my bonus action each round changing up the elemental type, because they resisted any non magical damage. The weapon itself was magical, but that “magical weapon damage type, slashing” was replaced by the element, and there was no “off button” except to end rage. I chose to maintain rage and deal half damage … which was a choice that arguable wasn’t the best one from a dps standpoint, but I wanted the extra reach and didn’t want to drop rage and burn anotherhttps://omegle****/https://xender.vip/.
The extra damage from Elemental Cleaver is rolled just like Sneak Attack extra damage is but doesn't otherwise scale like it.
Essentially, the weapon’s damage type changes to the chosen type, it deals an extra 1d6 damage of the chosen type when it hits and gains the thrown property,.
As for Resistance, attacking with a magical weapon bypass the Resistance to any damage type from Nonmagical Attacks. Most are Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing from Nonmagical Attacks.

Were they some kind of homebrew wight? Because otherwise that shouldn’t have happened. Wight resist necrotic damage, and damage from nonmagical b/p/s attacks. So the elemental damage should have worked just fine. And if the weapon was magic, any other damage should have worked as well. You should probably discuss this with your DM, as you’re hitting a level where you’ll find more and more resistant enemies.

You're telling me you are getting the Elemental Cleaver damage rolled for you?! Also, you have some means of choosing the damage type on the sheet? How?
On Roll20, you can create a damage roll called Elemental Cleaver in the global damage modifier field and set it to 1d6, which you could click on when active.
The damage type of your attacks on the other hand can't be second-guessed and have to be ruling on the fly upon determination.

That makes no sense. If the weapon was magical, it would overcome non-magical damage resistance regardless of what type it was dealing. Elemental Cleaver wouldn't override that

It sounds like they may be under the impression they have to use a bonus action each turn to keep the elemental damage up? Which isn't how it works. But even so you're right, the magic weapon on its own should overcome that resistance without needing to mess around with elemental damage.
When you infuse a weapon with Elemental Cleaver and deal acid, cold, fire, thunder, or lightning damage to a creature having Resistance to such damage type, then wether you do so with a magic weapon or nonmagical one won't matter it will still be halved against it.

Right, but wights don't traditionally have resistance to any of those types, just necrotic and non-magical bludgeoning/piercing/slashing. Hence the question about whether it was a homebrew monster with different attributes.

Yeah since these aren't related.
