I mean, dungeons take a long time to construct. And I'm sure that these extremely powerful wizards would want to protect their collections, treasures, trophies, research, etc after their demise. What kind of crypts would they design? Or better yet, who would design them? What if Volo found one and took us on a tour of these dungeons and gave his famous commentary on them?

And that is my thought. Yes, I know that these guys are not dead yet. But, they have been around a long time. They have done many things, collected many powerful artifacts, and I would assume amassed a large amount of knowledge and treasure that they would want to keep out of the wrong hands. Many powerful people began to build their tombs while they were young. Look at the Egyptians.
I would be interested to see what kind of dungeon Mordenkainen would have made. Or Bigby, etc.

The Egyptians had to start decades in advance because their project was so large and they lacked certain resources for construction. Epic level wizards wouldn't need nearly so much time. I suppose some wizard might contemplate their burial site (Acererak, Keraptis, etc.). In most cases I don't think mortality occurs to them (Mordenkainen, Pug) they just suffer unanticipated accidents so they don't prepare a tomb. If anything, they have a fortress or vault of some sort to collect and contain items (Marvel's Asgardian vault).

Interesting idea. It would make a good non-adventure dungeon sourcebook.
Not to burst your bubble, but some of those guys aren't dead yet... ;)

That is not a bubble burster. Many tombs begin construction before their occupant's death. And I believe that is the assumption we are going with.
