I am very curious about what each main greek god like Zeus, poseidon and hades would be as a character in DnD. not even as a god in the game but just as characters, race and class specifically. This is just a fun character building / fun to think about thread.
Here is a list of the main gods in the greek pantheon:
I built them all in dndbeyond once and there were differences that weren't as good as some of yours.
Zeus - changeling storm sorcerer
Poseidon - triton or water genasi coast druid
Hades - teifling death cleric
Hermes - Aarakocra monk (weird ok but i wanted flying + fast. I like your guys' better)
Apollo -elf bard (really like the scourge aasimar)
Hera - high elf couldn't decide class
Hephaestus - dwarf forge cleric with high str wis and con but low dex and cha.
Athena - high elf archivist artificer (specifically she would have an artificial mind that looks like an owl) but probably should have more battle focus...
Artemis - wood elf beast master ranger
Ares - half orc barbarian
Aphrodite - aasimar glamour bard
Demeter - human druid of the land with a sickle as main weapon.
Dionysus - halfling bard
Hestia-fire genasi light cleric
Also did some Egyptian gods but it was awkward. Both anubis and osiris were grave clerics
Zeus - lvl 25 Cleric, lvl 17 Fighter, lvl 20 Wizard, lvl 20 Sorcerer, lvl 15 Bard - This god usually appears as a human bearded male of powerful physique. He often shape changes. He disdains the use of ormor, but will use 0 +5 shield, his Aegis. Zeus is able to simultaneously attack and cast a 30 point lightning bolt each melee round. He wields a spear that does 6-60 points of damage. When his wounds spill blood on the earth, the blood forms a random sixth level monster. This can happen once per round. The monster will then fight for Zeus until dead or 48 hours elapse.
Poseidon - lvl 12 Cleric, lvl 12 Druid, lvl 13 Fighter, lvl 17 Wizard, lvl 17 Sorcerer, lvl 10 Bard - This god appears as a huge human and may command any non-divine creature of the water. At will, he shape changes, summons water beings, and creates life in any form (often originating new life forms at a whim). His anger at coastal towns who fail to sacrifice to him monthly may cause him to react in one of three ways: he may take all of the young males of the town in blood sacrifice, he may reduce the town to rubble in an earthquake, or he may flood the town and the surrounding countryside. Poseidon is responsible for the creation of all horses and he rewards his high priests and high priestesses for exceptional services with a paladinquality horse for their use. Poseidon fights with a +5 trident that hits for 4-40 points twice per melee round; this weapon can absorb any single spell in any given melee round and return a like spell at the desire of the god. In battle, the god often puts a watery haze around his body that acts like a + 5 ring of protection. This god rewards the prayers of his clerics with material things like springs in dry lands, water when needed in the form of rain, or too much water to his clerics' enemies. He has also been known to plague the worshipers of his sect with enchanted monsters of random types when they have transgressed in some way.
Athena - lvl 20 Cleric, lvl 14 Druid, lvl 20 Fighter, lvl 12 Wizard, lvl 12 Sorcerer, lvl 12 Bard - Athena usually appears as a beautiful woman wearing a war helm and carrying a spear and shield. She is often seen with an owl on her shoulder. She shape changes at will, moves as a blink dog, and she never misses her target. Her weapon does 5-50 points of damage per strike. Her shield has a medusa head upon it, and those looking at it may be turned to stone just as if it were alive. Her helm creates an anti-magic shell whenever she wishes, through which she can cast spells.

"............anybody got any potatoes? We could drop a potato in each hole an' see which ones get viciously mauled by horrible monsters?"
Zeus - Human Lore Bard with Poly morph and Lightning Bolt (he was a lover ... of many many ... creatures)
Poseidon - Triton Storm Cleric
Hades - Tiefling Undying Warlock
Hermes - Forest Gnome Arcane trickster with mobility feat.
Apollo - Half-elf Valor Bard mixed with paladin, archery focused
Hera - High Elf Divination Wizard
Hephaestus - Mountain Dwarf Inventor Wizard
Athena - Halfling Battlemaster Fighter
Artemis - Wood Elf Ranger, bow focused obviously.
Ares - Goliath Berserker Barbarian
Aphrodite - Changeling Divine Soul Sorceress
Demeter - Human Nature Cleric
Zeus- Human evoker wizard with true polymorph, shapechange, control weather, lightning bolt, thunderwave and all other lightning/thunder themed spells.
Poseidon- Triton Paladin.
Hades- Human necromancer, with summon lessser and greater demons spell, as well as infernal calling.
Hermes- wood elf horizon walker with winged boots.
Another Apollo thought: Elf (high or eladrin elf gives him prof in longbow) Bard - divination wizard multiclass (Bard gives him access to healing spells and music focus and he has a major focus on divination)
(Also i just like Artemis as a wood elf and having both twins elves)
I realise that I am late to this discussion thread. But here my own two-cents (slightly-modified after looking over everyone elses comments (so apologizes if that is considered cheating/wrong)). I also shied away from the Warlock, Cleric, and Paladin classes since those all required a greater entity to give them powers. I also did my best to include a reasonable background for each class. Lastly, this IS my first post here, so apologies if I did something wrong. Now, here is my list:
- Zeus - Folk-Hero, Air-Genasi, Sorcerer (Storm) I gave him the Folk-hero Background because he toppled Cronus (a "tyrant") from his throne. I made him an Air-Genasi because I felt it worked well thematically and it also allowed each of his brothers to be the same race (and yes I am aware that I didn't do the same with his sisers, but well... I didn't think of that until after I already created them, and I like them more NOT being the same. - Also if you view the men as being ELVEN-Genasi, then it still works... sort of... (ignoring sub-races...)) Storm Sorcerer, because well Storm Sorcerer Really does work well for him.
- Poseidon - Fisher, Water-Genasi, Druid (Coast),
Fisher, because he IS the god of the sea, so it seemed reasonable. Water-Genasi, Both 1). see above (About the Genasi) and 2). Sea* above. (About my Background reason) - (* - yes the sea was intentional) Druid (Coast), again it works REALLY well for him thematically.
- Hades - Urchin OR Haunted One OR Faceless OR Azorius Functionary, Earth-Genasi (OR Fire-Genasi), Rogue ()/Sorcerer (Shadow)
Hades's background was hard, so I gave him four potential options that I could see working well. Urchin and Faceless would both fit with him being a disliked god* and so hiding as member of the group. *(not really an "evil god" but disliked by both gods and mortals, god because he actually DOES his job. Mortals because he is a god of death... and those are very rarely popular, and because Disney and Popular Culture made him eviller then he was originally.)
Haunted One could actually go for most of the first five gods because I gotta say, being eaten alive? by your father? I would suspect that it would leave a mark. I also think it goes with his loner vibe of being disliked by everyone.
The Azorius Functionary is an option because of the gods? he is the most, focused on actually DOING his job AND NOT playing (read vindictively messing with) the mortals.
Earth-Genasi OR Fire-Genasi I could see either, depending on which you want to go with (Earth for the underworld and Fire for the Darkvision)
Rogue because HE IS a stealthy and hidden deity, and Sorcerer Shadow (because I think it goes REALLY well with him). The only problem is no real dead raising magic...
- Hermes: - Far Traveler, Human (Variant), Rogue (Arcane Trickster)
Far-Traveler, he is the god of merchants, and travelers... enough said. Human (Variant) - Spell-Sniper (Connect with Magic) OR Mobile (Travelling) Rogue (Arcane Trickster) - He is a god of MERCHANTS AND THIEVES AND is connect with MAGIC!... again enough said.
- Apollo: - Entertainer, High-Elf, Bard (College of Creation)/Wizard Divinations
Entertainer - He IS the (Greek) GOD of ENTERTAINMENT, well okay not entirely... but it is actually pretty close. High-Elf - Longbows... also I think it sort of goes with the whole, divine caster thing Bard College of Creation because I THINK it goes the best with him though Lore would also work. Wizard (School of Divinations) Because he IS the (Greek) god of divination, oracles, and prophecy.
- Hera: - Haunted One (OR) Noble, High-Elf, High-Elf - Bard (College of Glamour)
Her Background was hard, really hard, BUT I am currently thinking either: Haunted One - See above with Hades, also her relationship with the serial-philanderer (aka Zeus) OR Noble - She IS the queen of the (Greek) gods
High-Elf - I think it works well with my picture of Hera as being cool, composed, and regal. (Also it agreed the most with other people)
Her Class was again really hard (actually well evidenced by everyone elses comments) and while I considered Cleric (again SHE IS a god and gods don't worship other beings) or Rogue (but she was never REALLY stealthy) in the end I went with Bard (College of Glamour) because it worked well with her conniving nature while still giving her more options to be... regal then a rogue (even a mastermind or inquisitive)
Guild Artisan = the Craftsman Background Vs Hephaestus: god of craftsmen and forging = enough said. Mountain Dwarf - I admit I sort of think that Hephaestus started out as some other race and then turned into a dwarf. but either way a dwarf works well for his character, a slower speed, skilled smith, etc, etc. Artificer, While I could SEE a Cleric of the Forge, I was shying away from Clerics and he DOES work well for a Artificer.
Sage, she is the (Greek) goddess of Classical WISDOM (i.e. meaning more intelligence and knowledge then perception). High-Elf, Again I usually imagine High-Elves and Athena as being regal. Fighter, She IS the God of Warfare BUT since she IS also the god of strategy SO she needs to be a SMART fighter which leads to either the Battle Master OR the Eldritch Knight, I admit of those two Battle Master fits better thematically.
- Artemis: - Outlander, Wood-Elf, Ranger (Hunter)/Druid (Circle of the Moon)
Outlander, The Outlander is the best "Nature" background that I can think of, and it works well with Artemis. Wood-Elf, is the best "nature" race I can think of, and it thematically works well with both of her classes. Ranger (Hunter)/Druid (Circle of the Moon), She is the (greek) goddess of the HUNT, and (greek) goddess of the Moon. Enough said.
- Ares: - Soldier, Half-Orc, Barbarian (Path of the Berserker)
Soldier - He is the god of war. Half-Orc- Half-Orcs can be pretty/hot (I believe), and it works well for his more aggressive nature. Barbarian- he is the god of "physical or violent and untamed aspect of war and is the personification of sheer brutality" (yes it is from wikipedia BUT )
Background... This part isn't great, non of the backgrounds Really fit her as far as I could figure. The first part of Charlatan works well with her, however the rest... really doesn't. Hermit, she started out pretty much alone on Cyprus... sounds pretty "Hermitty" to me, however besides that, the lore don't really fit with her. The Grinner, is probably the best fit I can find and it isn't perfect, but it has Deception and "Performance" both of which work I feel fit well with Aphrodite. Aasimar - Read her creation myth... she is the daughter of "Uranus" and the sea... it works reasonably well. Bard (College of Glamour) - Pretty much Everyone agreed that Bard (College of Glamour) worked well with her, and I have nothing better.
- Demeter: - Outlander, Wood-Elf, Druid (Circle of the Land (Plains))
Outlander, she is the GODDESS OF NATURE! The Outlander is the best "Nature" background that I can think of. Wood-Elf, is the best "nature" race I can think of. Druid (Circle of the Land (Plains)), This is partly because I think it works very well and also because most of you all felt it worked well.
- Hestia - Hermit, Aasimar (Protector, Variant, or Scourge), Paladin (Oath of the Crown) OR Druid (Circle of Wildfire) OR
Hermit, because well... there just isn't much about her, she really primarily does JUST do her job as opposed to vindictively messing with the mortals. I also never got the view of her being vicious enough to be a Azorius Functionary.
Hestia goddess of the Hearth... while I could see Fire Genasi (I can easily understand and agree with it) BUT, I must go with the Aasimar as being a Protector against evil. I feel it fits more with her as being a protector of hearth and home (I admit the Protector Aasimar is good in flavor text but I admit I think Scourge is better in its Radiant Consumption and the Variant just works well overall).
Hestia is the only one of the Olympians I would personally consider making into a paladin, specifically an Oath of the Crown Paladin (to fit with Hestia being goddess of the state). However I think a Druid, Circle of the Wildfire could work as well (to connect with her being a goddess of the hearth and thus fire).
- Dionysius - Entertainer Half-Elf, Bard (College of Glamour)
I chose the background Entertainer, because he is the god of reverly and wine. I made him a half-elf, because I am viewing all the genasi gods as being "elven" genasi and his mother was "just" a human. I chose Glamour bard because 1) I think it works well for him thematically "Tutored by satyrs" (which were usually one of his followers) and 2) I think it is amusing that ALL of the Greek god bards are Glamour Bards. The only problem is that their is no madness, but I am not certain which class would grant the madness that I am looking for.
- Hecate: - Hermit, Shadar-Kai OR Drow, Wizard OR Sorcerer (depending on Shadar-Kai bonus)
She doesn't DO much and so Hermit Shadar-Kai OR Drow, she lives in the Underworld... She is the goddess of magic and so Wizard OR Sorcerer (depending on bonuses)
Apologies that this went a little (okay probably a lot) overkill for a (likely dead) thread but I really enjoy trying to figure out the backgrounds, classes, and races for characters. I will also apologize for the numerous spelling and grammar errors and a thank you to everyone who gave their opinions before.

Some are pretty obvious like Artemis. But you never know maybe you guys come up with some creative options. :)
Well...if they're greek, human. 😀
I'm fairly certain that most if not all of them are/were multiclass.

Zeus is an eldritch knight.
Poseidon is a druid.
Hades is tough but probably a rogue.
Hermès is definitely a rogue.
Apollo is a bard.
Hera is a rogue.
Hephaestus is an artificer.
Athena is an eldritch knight.
Artemis is a ranger.
Ares is a barbarian.
Aphrodite is a bard.
Demeter is a druid.
I am literally a classicist, so these aren’t opinions, they’re peer-reviewed facts.
Alright, joking answer aside, let me try my hand at God themed adventurers real quick:
Must resist the urge to class Zeus as a bard just because he was f***king everything...
I think DJC kinda nailed it though
I built them all in dndbeyond once and there were differences that weren't as good as some of yours.

well 12 gods, 12 classes in the PHB, I feel like I should assign each class to one god!
My RPG Campaigns
Those are some amazing picks for both race and classes. Well done good sir! (Love the Zeus lover thingy, I like it a lot haha)
It would have to be another Multiclass option on Apollo. Paladin can't be Archery Focused
I'm just going human for all the races.
Wizard (Gandalf) of the Tolkien Club
Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Spells, Monsters, Subclasses, Races, Arcknight Class, Occultist Class, World, Enigmatic Esoterica forms
That is 97 levels boyos.... I would not want to try messing with him.
WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
What? I don't think that's that hard to kill. If he's easier to kill than a planet, my players can take him.
