Serious question- how do you picture a Green Dragon's poison breath?
Is it fog? Is it liquid? Does it have any blugeoning force? Does it cause rot, or is the risk only in its ingeston? Would something that doesn't breath have immunity?
I have been puzzling over this as I stage a scenario.
If I remember it's a visible green gas. Since there's no contingency on breath or such, it's a contact poison. The movement of air may push people a little, but not enough to have any in game effects and certainly not enough to bludgeon.
Note that Necrotic damage is rot or disintegration, Poison damage is more sickness and such.

It literally says the dragon "exhales poisonous gas in a 90-foot cone" - so it will look like a 90-foot gas-cloud of poison. I'd probably make it a sickly green colour.
There is nothing in the description to describe breath of the targets so it will affect them whether they breathe or not. Realistically it is probably toxic both when inhalled and by contact with skin - but mechanically this makes no difference. Regardless of what they are, whether they breathe or what they wear - if they're in the cloud they take poison damage unless they have immunity to poison damage. It's as simple as that.

I've always pictured any of the gas breath weapons more like the spray from a fire extinguisher when it comes to speed and force. I find it helps to keep the visual danger on par with the elemental weapons. However I had a DM once describe it as a rolling black smoke like you'd see from a car fire, which was pretty evocative!
I like to imagine that it sprays and invisible gas into the air that players only notice when it combines with their skin oil and turns it greens as it burns them form the inside out
Thanks for the feedback, comparison to a fire extinguisher is a good one.
I think we agree that a green dragon's breath would not blow the roof off an Inn or knock any trees over then? Or leave much physical trace at all (aside from a smell and a trail of corpses?)
I was going to say, I thought it was specifically stated to be chlorine and although chlorine is more yellowish than green, it's described as a green gas...

The Green Dragon's Breath weapon is a Cloud of Chlorine Gas, which would indeed be a greenish fog cloud.
I imagine Barf and Belch from Dragons breathing out gas but probably with more force.

I agree totally, but it's not ordinary poison either. People should realize greens use it to FIGHT other dragons with! So it's got to be powerful.
