How do ppl deal with a player spotting treasure other party members do not? I feel like them passing notes to me & making rolls secretively might lead to disharmony.
I have a player who’s rogues trait is that they notice the take note of the most valuable stuff in the room before anything else. They’d like to take not of any particularly valuable item NPCs are carrying/using so he can try to loot them first.
I was thinking of just using the characters passive perception and describing something in more detail but I am not sure any advice is welcome. Thanks for the help.
Try not to overthink it. When you describe a room, when you are finished laying out the particulars, maybe just look at the rogue and say, "you think these few things in here have value and wouldn't be too hard to extract."
I guess I just don't get that entire style of play. If I'm a rogue and I do something like that, as soon as we clear the area and get to safety I basically turn to the party and say "hey, guys, I managed to walk out of there with a halberd in my pants! Anyone want it?" The stealing is the fun part. The keeping is irrelevant, and I'd rather the entire party be optimally equipped than sit on a pile of junk I can't use.

I agree and think that if they were going to take something do it after they are defeated OR if their character gets close enough during battle to take it then. Now, I just started so these might not work but logically if you think of it as if it were in real life that would work. I would try to tell the rogue this before hand.
