My DM is saying that, according to lore, a week in Forgotten Realms is canonically 10 days (see https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Calendar_of_Harptos). I'm not going to say that's a problem, but in many of the supplements like Xanthar's Guide, we see a lot of reference to weeks being 7 days. How does this affect downtime activities and such? Should the reference of a week in every book we use be considered 10 days or 7 days when considering cost and time? Thanks for the help!
I think when you start getting into time like "weeks" and "months" it makes more sense to do these as campaign or world based rather than objective amounts.
For example, let's say a certain thing happens "once a week" in the DMG, like say, paying rent on a stronghold. I would not say "Well in FR a week is 10 days so that means rent is paid every 10 days in my world." Rather, I would say, "A week in my world is 7 days, so they pay rent every 7 days."
Assuming everything scales then both the pros and the cons of doing it every "sevenday" instead of every "tenday" should balance out. And it makes much more sense internally to use the campaign world's calendar rather than some standard that does not dovetail with the game world.
Faerun does indeed use a ten day week (actually called a Tenday).
As far as Xanathar's Guide to Everything goes, it uses the standard definition of a week (7 days) as well as standardised month (30 days) for ease of setting agnostic timing of activities.
As a general rule it shouldn't matter if an activity that takes one week counts as 7 days or 10, as long it's a week.
Most of the FR adventures & campaigns that I have run used a 7 day week. Far to big of a problem to have the characters adjust to the changes. I just kept with our calendar system except for one group who was really heavy into D&D.
Since you only have 3 weeks each month it would just reduce the number of weeks of downtime by 1. You could increase the losses and gains from the 1 week by a third though.
