Hi all. I'm excited about the Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign book coming out. And I wanted to ask folks for interesting character ideas that might fit into such a winter-swept setting? I'm interested in both story driven ideas and well as builds that might do well within the Icewind Dale setting. What would you play?
Would you play a rugged tracker who's an expert in survival and fighting in the harsh arctic environment? (ranger/rogue with natural explorer and expertise)
Or perhaps a goliath with a bit of frost giant blood in their veins, who grew up on hunting in the spine of the world? (goliath archer)
Or maybe a city guard or investigator who's sight can pierce the darkness of the long nights? (warlock with devil's sight)
Or an ice sailor and fisherman who can turn into a fish themselves to swim beneath the icy lakes to hunt for knucklehead trout? (druid)
Ideas welcome...
Out of those suggestions, the Rugged tracker sounds the most interesting. Personally I wouldn't min dplaying Lars-Ove Trofversen, Dwarven Arctic explorer and Battle Smith Artificer, trudging along with his faithful mechanical sledhound Tryggve.
Levistus had a spark of his soul taken from him many years ago, making it simpler to be imprisoned by Asmodeus. He lost this spark and it had been missing for a hundred years. One day a 16 year old female human had became pregnant from absorbing this spark, and gave birth to a Tiefling. The human died during childbirth. The Tiefling had thought to be dead when it crawled into the frozen tundra alone, but survived and was found by an ice devil searching for demons. The ice devil brought the baby to Stygia where he met his father through telepathy. He was trained by many devils and was sent as a tribute to the armies in Avernus. He thought very bravely and fiercly and when he turned 16, he had killed 200 thousand demons. He received an award of 2 swords, one representing the 9 hells, and one representing the layer his father lived on. He thought hard for another 10 years until he was summoned by Asmodeus. Asmodeus imprisoned him in ice like his father had been and sent the Tiefling to the material plane. He lay there for 500 years until being found by a Reghed tribe. He slaughtered half of them and then hid in ten-towns. He traveled around and contacted his father. He one day went to Caer-Dineval and found the Knights of the Black Sword. He was worshiped by them and they asked him to help defeat Auril. He went off in search of assistance.
Wow, what a fun, amazing story. It sounds like your character must be pretty high level with that amount of history and battle experience, unless he’s been weakened from his imprisonment?
I'm really digging the "Goliath Who's descended from a frost giant" idea. That sounds pretty perfect for the Icewind Dale. I was thinking some kind of Cleric devoted to Auril as well.

The new Rune Knight class would be perfect for the Goliath giant. A Twilight cleric might fit the campaign pretty well too.

A cleric of Auril would threaten to severely derail the campaign. The entire book is written from a baseline assumption that you're on board with opposing her, and on top of that, she's presented as not having any clerics - her temple staff are all druids.
I love the idea of a squad of adventurers for whom the local climate isn't awful - a goliath, a white dragonborn, a triton, and... well, the only other race I can think of is Tiefling, but they need a feat for it. But regardless, a squad like that would be bound to be a lot of fun.

Building on this-
A background Idea-

I was thinking if a character died at a higher level in the adventure someone could use this.
