Honestly I don't think you can get slower than connecting to R20. My group is always getting timed out. So already for me self hosting foundry is more reliable than R20, and free. If I want a very reliable service with many extras, I can pay monthly to the FORGE just as I would have to with R20, but the quality is way better (I did two weeks free and the connection was just way above and beyond R20)
+1 for The Forge. It's not just the connection speed. They also do a really good job of error-checking your modules vs. the version of the game, and they are always trouble-shooting the new updates, so they warn you if there is a problem and you shouldn't update yet, etc. (Though, props to them, they do allow you to updated to an "unrecommended" version, since it's your account... they assume users are intelligent and competent, which is a refreshing thing to have assumed about you these days.)

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
With the right module, you can sync both ways. Content that doesn't exist in DNDBeyond can't be synced to it (there are work arounds though).
If your players use Foundry characters, just make sure you sync to DNDBeyond at the end of the session so it is always authorative (or the reverse I suppose if you use a lot of custom items).
We play in person and players use DNDBeyond with rolls integrated into Foundry. I only sync DNDBeyond characters for NPC automation and animations.
How did you do that?

Hope that answered your question.
I haven't tried Foundry yet, but roll20 has been good to me- it's ease of use is top-notch.
Fantasy grounds is pure garbage from an ease of use pov. I have never found a more unintuitive interface. Do not buy.
