I get that it's 1d8 because you're a martial class and doing less than 1d8 is an active hinderance. Fighters either DPS or Tank, and you just can't do that with 1d6 or 1d4. And the Monk doesn't tank. It explores. Knowing that, I still hate it. A lot. Like, a lot a lot.
Don't get me wrong, my bias 100% comes from the Tavern Brawler feat. It's a terrible feat and one of my favourites. It's the only way to become proficient in Goblin Corpse. Suck it Weapon Master with your 4 proficiencies. Tavern Brawler gives you shield attacks, goblin corpse, table, the Rogue, the Wizard's Spellbook (it's his fault for dropping it), rugs, bonus action grapples, 1d4 unarmed strikes, and a boost to str or con... but it's a critically underrated feat, and here comes this fighting style all like, "Nobody likes that puney feat. Lesson learned, let's double it's damage!" *grumble*

Well, that works until you need to punch a ghost or some other creature that is immune or resistant to your non-magical unarmed attacks.
