Would be a slower method of playing a full game. There are those who will keep a strictly RP game and let people join/leave the conversation, and others who'll host a full game and lock down a thread with approved players who applied to join.
I think it would be great to have someone explain to people like me what Play by Post is about?
What are the general rules and expectations? What generally happens? What's people's opinions on it?
So there are a lot of methods that seem to fall into play by post. I think the easiest way to describe it is playing a full game by some type of text method (message board, forum site, email, chat room, .etc) It is slower than a live game but it can be more consistent if everyone posts often. I personally like Tavern-keeper. It is forum based but all information relating to the campaign is self contained and non-players can only see a 'Home page" with a description of the campaign.
Rules can vary as widely as an in person game, I am in two games one is very RAW based the other has some home brew elements.
Most sites that house PbP have some type of dice roller app/tool that is built in to the posting method which is how you do your rolls. Rather than saying what you are going to to, you just have to type it out.
My experience to this point has been pretty positive, (even though I have issue with some of the homebrew rules) but i t an be a real drag if you do not get people that post consistently. The site I use is fairly mobile friendly so I have my campaign pages saved as tiles on my phone so I am checking all of the time, ( I have also shared this with the other players which has really helped to keep the game moving). I will always prefer live games over the table but this is a good substitute since my friends are spread out and have varying schedules.
If Play by Post is anything like forum Roleplay it is essentially a group of people getting together and writing a story! The DM will take place of writing out the antagonists in any case, there can sometimes be conflictions with what characters write, but good thing we have the edit feature. When all said and done ive seen some really great 200ish post stories that could be published as small novels with a little editing. Really impressive when done right.

Any advice or recommendation for play by post? I am currently involved in two live groups, so would it be worth it to join in on this?
That depends on how much you like to D&D. I am in 2 play by post games and one live game (online but live) I originally looked into PnP because my home game fizzled. It is nice to fill the gap between play sessions. I probably wouldn't want to DM that much D&D but I don't have that kind of free time. (2 jobs, and 3 kids take up some time) but playing doesn't require anywhere near the same prep time. I think everyone should try it out.

If you love a character, you give them pain, ruin their lives, make them suffer. Maybe even throw in a heroic death.

All depends on the game & DM.

A great video to help understand play by post.

Do not expect people to be smart, but do not allow them to be stupid. If there is one thing I have learned it is this.
Thanks @Elimyst, I'll definitely look into finding a good game to join via PbP
