I tend to have a harder time naming things. Quite a few of my characters are named after different fruits and vegetables in Latin. Why? I just decided to do it once, and I started naming a lot of my characters after fruits and vegetables. For example, one of my characters, Fragum, means strawberry in latin.
That's a good point, greek makes great names, I've had Aequitas and Aetherna, so far...
They are good. I'm playing a character named Eris in the Tavern thread.
To be fair, you didn't realize that Eris was the Greek goddess of discord until someone else mentioned it.

My eldest daughter plays a rogue called Aïte Lokieris, which is basically the concatenation of 3 god(desse)s of mischief/chaos. You can guess what she is usually up to... :D
The last toon name I went old norse one of the Nine sisters who changed her name to enemy of god. can't find it now but I digress names have been lost in time you just need to search where no one looks to find names in dead languages.

And here I thought I was on my best behavior. BUT NO I got scolded and threatened with corner time. I guess we are not allowed to express our feelings or opinions on anything here. All hugs and kisses every body's special every one gets a ribbon that says 'Your a winner" Not here more then a week and I got naughty points twice. How many points do I get?
Random name generator and see if I can actually say it, and if there's half a chance of saying it without sounding like an idiot.
I'm not good with real-ish names. Most of my internet handles are titles or phrases, and I guess I should let the secret out. I'm neither a Bob (or Robert or anything like that) nor a fish.
My current character uses details from one of the supplements, but I've been looking at developing a character subplot where its revealed she was declared stillborn by her tribe due to her deformities she was born with.
Do you know what "The Exile" means in elvish?
I've come across two possible translations and was wondering if there are any other sources?
Edledhia or Tel'Hrayek
Which sounds better?
I usually go online and find a translator. I use lingojam a lot as they have translators to Elvish, Dwarfish, etc. Looks like it gave me Tel'Hrayek. I like that format, as I used it for some homebrew magical items for my party.
I use online translators (lingojam usually) and also real reference materials. I used to do heraldry for the SCA so I have a bunch of books on naming conventions for different languages. Other sources I have used have been dictionaries of angelic names (for a tiefling), animal classifications (for an upcoming weresheep), plant classifications (for an upcoming myconid), names of gemstones for elementals, etc.
Naming characters, races, and NPCs for D&D has always been easy for me. I typically just either throw together a bunch of syllables into a blender to get a cool name that fits the theme of the character/race.
That's pretty much what I do too.
Yep. Different species/classes change how I do this, too. Dragons/Dragonborn typically get harder consonants and more syllables, like "Kolrasivanthor" or "Tivsornathilkor".
I did that for my one dragonborn character: Alxnandjiir (Clan Ophinshtalajiir). I wanted to have a feel of a language that was very different from others, and have the pronunciation be something hard for non-dragonborn. This guy gets called Alexander...
Just wanted people to know about this- Star and constellation names are PERFECT for elves of all genders, ages, and personalities. I know people might like different names than me, but personally, I think that Castor, Rigel, Adhara, Capella, and Lyra are really amazing, elvish-y sounding names. Hope this helps someone with the nightmare that is naming a character!

Since I play mostly elves, I really like using star names. Capella, Lyra and Rigel are just really good elf names. I also came up with what I think is an amazing name for my eladrin. I named her Xen' Dari because it sounds like Xen' Drik which is the isle where elven culture started and she has the sage backstory so it all worked perfectly!

I realized it before then. Just not when I came up with it.

Arioch is CE(In John Milton's Paradise Lost) Chaos is not specifically evil, and I meant more CN.

First step, try to find out what the other people in the party are named.
Second step, choose a letter that is different from what everybody else' names start with.
Third step, try to find a suitable name from sources outside D&D - Babylon 5, The Expanse, Thieve's World...
Fourth step if the above didn't work, bang on the keyboard a few times and see what I get.
