We are a group of seven players, five women and two men, all in our 20s and a mixture of long term players and relatively new players. We are looking for a DM/GM to run a campaign in Matt Mercer's Exandria setting. We would like a homebrew story, set in Wildemount but with the potential to visit other continents. If you don't have the necessary sourcebooks for this campaign setting, the players will split the cost and purchase it for you.
We are a group of serious, dedicated players who want to play a long term, multi-year game with a serious, dedicated DM. A couple of us are long term DMs and so fully understand all the work that goes into it and just how much of a commitment running a level 1-20 campaign can be. Thankfully, we are a group of lovely people who will do our best to reward your hard work!
I am Jack 👋. I'm the one that started this group — I took player applications so if you want to look at them, just message me and I'll send them over — I was really selective when I was picking people (I've already played with most of them in other games) and we've ended up with a really cool and interesting group of players who all want the same type of game — now we're looking for that magical person to make it all happen.
We would like to use discord for voice and video and we would like to use a virtual tabletop but are happy with whichever one you prefer.
Scheduling: we are a fairly flexible group, but our preference is for Sundays, from 5:30pm and for around 3-4 hours.
The kind of game we are looking for:
So, we are all into roleplay and this will be a roleplay heavy game. A number of us will spend the vast majority of the game in character, breaking mainly if not only to clarify things. Some of us may be a little more descriptive and spend less time speaking as our characters, but will spend the entire session in character. We are looking for a DM that is comfortable playing the NPCs and engaging in dialogue as it is a much more immersive roleplay experience.
The main reason we want someone comfortable writing homebrew stuff is because we would like our character backgrounds integrated into the story. We are all working on interesting backstories that give us a place in the world while leaving you plenty of room to work with, but we are all prepared to scrap or rewrite parts to make it easier for you. Over the course of 20 levels there should be plenty of opportunities to include everyone, but we appreciate this may just be in minor ways and perhaps unrelated to the main story. We also understand that depending on the backstories we give ourselves and the story you prepare for us, some of us may be more involved than others — that's fine, as long as it doesn't favour any one character too heavily. It's also probably worth noting at this point that we would not like any chosen ones or for one of our party to become the main protagonist.
We would like challenging combat in interesting environments. A 60/40 or 70/30 style game that leans slightly more in favour of social encounters and roleplay would be perfect, but we do love to fight. We would also like there to be multiple ways to overcome encounters, so we don't have to fight our way through every problem. Random encounters are great — once and a while and at the right times. But for the most part, encounters should have some roleplaying/story aspect.
We want to start at level 1 with starting equipment or gold, and using the heroic standard array stats (17,15, 14, 13, 10, 6) or (17, 15, 14, 13, 8, 8).
Magic items should be rare in the world but possible to find. We do want magic stuff, but we want that feeling of excitement when we get them.
Some themes we are interested in: politics and alliance building, we want the feel of an open world, and we want to save the world (eventually). We will be heroes and we would like opportunities to be heroic. A dark and gritty aspect to the world would very much be appreciated, but perhaps localised to certain areas — Exandria is a magical place and we still want that high fantasy exploration.
That said, we are really open to you bringing your own flavour to this. The specific themes of the campaign, we would like to come from you and ultimately, surprise us.
We would also like recurring NPCs that we can ally with and befriend (but are never forced to). Please just give us a couple of cool people who don't turn out to be *****.
Ultimately, we are all looking to have a good time. Characters may clash in the world over certain things but they won't fight each other. We may not all know each other when we begin the story (some of us will be a brand new adventuring party with very little experience) but we will soon all become allies.
So, the way we want to do this is to start with a trial game. There are a couple of beginner quests in the wildemount sourcebook, one of which is free on roll20. Or, if you would prefer to run a one shot you are more familiar with, that is fine. We just want the chance to see how we gel as a group and if we suit your style of game, before we make the commitment of starting a campaign together. My intention is to talk to DMs that are interested, maybe fire some questions over from the group and answer any that you have, and then arrange a one shot. Applications will be open for one week before we arrange any games, so take your time with the applications. The group will go through all of them, submit their favourites, and then we will vote on a handful to arrange one shots with.
We are not expecting to begin this campaign for the next two months, if not longer, to give us time to play a couple of different games and then to allow you time to familiarise yourself with the world and prepare the story. We are not in any rush, and are keen to get this right.
A few other things that may be of interest of you:
- Some of us would like to multiclass later in the game
- There's also a couple of hombrew rules we like — the Perkins critical damage rule, for instance, and the chance to reroll hp dice when levelling up. We will suggest them to you, once, before we begin and you can let us know if you like them.
- This is the most important thing for me. We are an overwhelmingly positive and friendly group. It is a very specific dynamic that has been difficult to cultivate online and I'm sure you can imagine how keen we are to protect it. If you are not a kind, considerate, and patient person, you should not apply to run this group.
That aside, we are all very excited for this and we hope you are too! Please get in touch if you feel like this is the kind of game you would like to run. We are a fun, respectful group that can't wait to bring your stories to life!
Hey there. So, gonna give you a tip on this one. When you have a group that is that specific in what they want, I've found that you really have 3 options. 1: Pray to the gods of D&D that a DM who has a game in that setting happens to see this and goes for it. 2: Pay someone. At least if you're paying, you can have more input on what you want and expect to get it. Or 3. and this is the one I want to push: One of your group puts on the DM hat. 7 is a lot of players. One of you really should, and could, DM the group for the others. At least you're all on the same page about what you want.
Also, and once again, just a tip, your post is insanely long. I only got through about a 3rd of it. Elevator pitch it man. Best of luck finding someone, but I really recommend you all look internally for a DM.
Brother, when you're looking for a DM willing to sink a lot of hours into creating a world for you, it's usually a good sign if they can be bothered to read the whole thing.

I foolishly forgot to add the EST timezone.

A quick question, right off the bat: Would you all be willing to pay-to-play?
I’ve been interested in making a Wildemount game for a while. However, DMing for me is a full-time job.
I didn’t quite see it in the post, and I want to assume that probably not, but if you are do let me know.
Give me a shout, it'll be worth your while.
