Like all new games, it can be a little intimidating to start, but people are there to help with that. It's not a large server at this point (I've only recently started opening it to people outside of my friend group) but I think it’s hit a point where it can be an enjoyable experience for new and veteran players alike :)
The people we have right now are from all over the world, with varying time zones and varying real life schedules; so play by post games are what typically occurs and they tend to be very flexible. Some people run small 2-3 hour text games, others run month long 24/7 games; still others prefer a set time each week to continue games more traditionally; some prefer to run voice only/Roll20, etc...but they are overall interconnected.
Levels 1-9 start in a school environment, allowing you to mingle with people in/out of class, pick up quest seeds, learn about/run things in the larger world, etc as you go. You get to dip your toes into the larger world starting at level 6, and upon graduation at level 10 the world is yours to play in without hopefully seeming overwhelming.
There are expectations of what to do when you join certain games, but the free role play is very casual and there are options to play 24/7. Drop in/out as you are able, and only commit to the games that you have time to actively commit to (while running other encounters/downtime any time you have a few minutes free). We have a whole orientation (Session 0) that goes over more details on that, introduces you to the world, and helps you hit levels 3-5 at your own pace. :)
It's an open dynamic world, where there is no 'one' DM, and over time all players are expected to run at least short encounters for other players so help keep things interesting for everyone. It's a bit different than other games because of that, but it keeps things interesting.
Feel free to pop in and look around. If nothing else, it might be a good place to check out between other games 🙂
While play by post is how the majority of our games are played, it is not the only way. We recognize that people have different play styles, availabilities, and preferences in the games that they play and try to accommodate all (as we can).
New players and story tellers are always welcome. People who love role play and story telling are especially encouraged to join. :)
Nearly 2000 years ago, the world was a very different place. There was no contact with (or knowledge of) planes beyond this one and this was reflected in the world that existed then. It was a world mostly devoid of magic, populated almost exclusively with humans. Unfortunately, very little is actually known about it because of a cataclysmic event that irrevocably changed the world: the Planar Crash.
During this event, portals to planes beyond this one began opening. Gods, devils, demons, aberrations, and creatures of all kinds were suddenly face-to-face with people that could never have imagined they existed. Some of these portals led to the Elemental Planes which introduced the powerful and sometimes dangerous dragons to this plane. Unfortunately, the people that lived here could not understand the creatures and entities they now faced. As so often happens, their confusion turned to fear, anger, and soon hatred.
Humans started using their meager power to hunt the lesser creatures that poured through the portals, but found this inadequate for the greater ones. They began to seek more and more power as they feared potential subjugation from these beings. In time, they learned how to make pacts with powerful creatures, how to derive power from worship, and more; thus beginning to take back the world. During this time, a cabal of dragon hunters rose to prominence and influence.
They initially feared the potential in the chromatic dragons, as they were overtly evil and greedy creatures and handily united the people of Iodrarune to fight against the planar interlopers. These campaigns eventually grew more and more aggressive and dangerous, so a group of metallic dragons, led by a powerful, wizened silver dragon, created the Watchtower Isle as a sanctuary.
It is still widely believed by that dragons are either myths or extinct, a fact that the remaining dragons generally do what they can to support by remaining in hiding...
The air feels cold against your skin as the ship pushes through the unseen magical barrier. It's only a brief discomfort, quickly returning to a more clement temperature as the island comes into view. You've heard of magic before, you may have even dabbled in it previously, but this type of magic is new... unfamiliar. To some, it may provoke some anxiety, but for you... it's exciting. It's new. It's unexplored. As the ship slowly approaches the island, you simultaneously take in the geographical features that are prominent while thinking about the reason you came on this journey to begin with.
The Alchademy promises to teach all students who have the desire to learn about magic and alchemy, regardless of any innate talent. Even those without magic prowess often find it rewarding to learn about magic for their own defense. It's inclusivity makes it one of the most exclusive institutions around, as only the people who truly wish to work hard and learn are truly wanted and welcomed in this school. All invitations come with fully paid room, board, and tuition; and when you got yours you knew you were one of only a handful of applicants to be selected from the thousands of hopefuls.
If I still have your attention, you are the type of player we are seeking.
The Alchademy is a D&D 5e discord server. We primarily run drop in/drop out play by post games (because real life comes first). Connected one shots (including both scheduled/spontaneous 2-5 hours games for those available at specific times and continual multi-day games for those who need a slower pace and can only commit to a few posts per day) allow your character to mingle its others, grow, and level. Role play is our life blood, and we want you to help us tell our collective story.
Your character will learn about the larger world in a prestigious academy: taking classes, learning skills, and having random adventures that will lead them out to the world at large until they graduate. They then will begin to create the history that newer cohorts of students will learn.
After a bit of a hiatus (because real life always comes first) we are seeking new players. We’ve been able to use our downtime to improve the server and the overall experience.
Come join a community where you are part of the changing and growing world and what could become a large ongoing campaign. Or just drop in and play here and there as your schedule permits.
The Festival of Doors and subsequent graduation went off swimmingly. Now, some students nearing graduation are enjoying a Study Abroad program where they can learn more about the larger world.
