Greetings, I am looking for a 3players whom are interested in joining a homebrewed D&D campaign following 5e rules/handbooks that will be long term. The game will be conducted on discord for voice, roll20 for combat, and subsequent game times will depend on the group's availability. Each session will run for 3 to 4 hours maximum.
All of the players are 18+ as a mature game is in mind. My games do not feature anything of discomfort as I am solely looking for players whom wish to commit to a long term D&D campaign and wish to engage in a more serious game.
If you are interested, below you will find the GAME INFORMATION and CAMPAIGN INFORMATION. Please answer the small questionnaire at the end here on the forums or through a PM, and subsequently leave your discord here or through a PM.
GAME INFORMATION
Game: D&D 5e Group Type: Online (Discord) Current Group Size: 3 Players + possibly you? Experience: Preferably Experienced Players, but Beginners Welcomed Location/Timezone: Discord | PST (GMT -8) Schedule: Sundays (2PM - 5 PM PST | GMT -8) Game Style: Following the 5e rules/handbooks with a few house rules. Players delve into a character driven story where their actions and backstory dictate the narrative with an overarching plot in the background. I run my campaigns usually as a 70/30 split (70 % RP / 30 % Combat).
This is a long term campaign meaning all players are expected to commit. Breaks are often taken as playing D&D every week is not a realistic expectation for both DM and players alike, whether it be for holidays, players having a prior commitment, or for the sake of taking a week here and there off throughout the year. This group is already planning on meeting through most of the year as much as possible. The campaign will end when each of the players have undergone their individuals character arcs, and the central overarching plot in the background is tied up by the players.
CAMPAIGN INFORMATION
OVERVIEW The campaign will take place within the World of Athera, a homebrewed fantasy setting encompassing the very best aspects of 5th editions sourcebooks/modules.
Athera was created by a divine entity solely known as the Goddess through most cultures and civilizations. This world houses all manner of races, creatures, and various other forms of beings upon several continents spanning hundreds of miles. Over the course of many centuries, realms and kingdoms alike have taken shape throughout the lands, and it is up to the very few to change the course of Athera's ongoing history whether it be through small actions or monumental means.
GENRE/TONE Athera is primarily run one of two ways: Dark fantasy or ' Mixture ' of High and Vanilla Fantasy. The genre and tone of Athera is 'somewhere in the middle" as I would call it. I love Tolkien's high fantasy epic world of Middle Earth but also enjoy George R.R. Martin's fantastically gritty setting of Ice and Fire. My love for these polar opposites of fantasy melded into the tone of Athera, which takes the best of both and attempts to give the players a sense of realism but still harboring the love of what makes D&D fun. Athera operates based upon the sourcebooks of D&D 5th edition, so all basis of technology and magic fall under whatever guidelines are established within the books themselves. It is structed within a way to feel familiar to the players of Faerun campaigns and alike, but also acting fresh and new.
PLAYER EXPERIENCE As stated before, Athera is designed to feel familiar to players of D&D while also offering a fresh new setting for players to experience a campaign within. Each player is given enough time before the campaign starts to weave a backstory with me into the world and watch as their player undergoes their own arc which can be tailored by themselves or with my help in the campaign.
My campaigns operate on a open world style setting where the players' backstories determine the plot and ongoing on the group. There is an overarching narrative which ties each players together and it is up to the players and their actions on how the campaign will go.
CURRENT CAMPAIGN Work has already begun upon the campaign weeks before this forum post is up on dndbeyond. I am aiming to engage my players within a campaign which starts small and eventually can turn into a large scale epic which they can become heroes or the like. All of my campaigns are good centered, as I am not one for an evil campaign. This campaign is going to feature elements of Final Fantasy, a few scrambles of typical D&D action, and some other aspects which I don't wanna get into as the players at the end of the day determine where the story goes.
Questionnaire What days work best for you?
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player… Is there anything from previous campaigns that you wish was in other campaigns? Do you enjoy role-playing? Are you willing to commit to a long-term campaign?
What type of story are you looking for in a campaign?
1.) The days that work best for me are going to vary as I have work and then I'm going off to college in August, but I know I can't usually do Wednesdays and Saturdays.
2.) One experience I really enjoyed as a player was a time where my character, an egotistical bard, used a lute as a way to cast thunderwave, nearly killing off three of the party members. Using the instrument to cast the spell was cool because I liked tying in my backstory as an expert instrumentalist and magic user. One experience I was not a huge fan of was the time I had created a brand new character and I died in the first session and I couldn't make a new one, I was just kicked out of the campaign.
3.) I wish that more DMs would be open to some breaks in the RP stuff, because every once in a while it's nice to just laugh about something out of character.
4.) I love role-playing, and while with random people it might be a bit nerve wracking at first, I think that once I get to know people it'll be ok.
5.) I would love to have a long term campaign as a way to keep myself grounded during college.
6.) I'm just looking for something with lots of character to character interaction and a fair amount of combat.
1.) I work from 6:30am to 3:00pm EST every weekday, so weekday evenings work fine. Sunday afternoons and evenings work as well. Fridays and Saturdays are mostly off limits.
2.A) Experience I really enjoyed as a player: After a long 1.5 year campaign, my high level wizard finally completed a ritual to turn into a Lich. The intent of the character was to have an evil character arc and it was really cool to finally accomplish my characters primary goal (to the dismay of my party members). But in general, RP and forms of character progression are what I typically enjoy...
2.B) Experience I disliked as a player: Being in a railroaded campaign, it's hard to enjoy the game when things are predetermined and forced onto you.
3.) Honestly friends and good players are so important, so I guess if I could wish for something it would be to have some of my previous friends involved in future campaigns. It's a trash answer for a DM I know, but player-player/player-DM connections are important, and establishing a rapport is essential to having a good campaign.
4.) Yes, roleplaying is one of the most important aspects of the game, how could you not enjoy it!
5.) Yes, having something to look forward to in the week is important.
6.) Interparty drama and character interaction is so fun! Epic combat encounters are a major plus too!
Something more I should add, I have a friend who could potentially be interested in this as well!
What days work best for you? Mondays and the Weekends.
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player.
The time our party had bested an archmage's foolish maze which was filled with deadly traps. We were lucky because our ranger had an adult drake companion which helped us a lot.
Subsequently, our DM discussed with us in a heated combat because we apparently weren't supposed to fly above the maze, which led to the ending of our group. I haven't seen the DM ever since this occurred.
Is there anything from previous campaigns that you wish was in other campaigns?
Mostly a friendly welcoming environment. I am looking for some mature and laid-back group of people.
Do you enjoy role-playing?
Of course! I always liked the idea of solving social troubles and taking non combative approaches.
Are you willing to commit to a long-term campaign?
Yes I'm willing! If I wasn't, u wouldn't be seeing my message
What type of story are you looking for in a campaign?
A story filled with moments where quickand unconventional thinking and our choices can make different impacts on the living worly.
1) Any time during the weekends typically works best for me, but I'm pretty flexible and down for whatever.
2) It's hard for me to choose a specific experience that I've enjoyed, I'm just a huge fan of storytelling and roleplay so anything like that is awesome. The only negative experience I've really had with D&D was when I felt like my decisions didn't matter and the DM was maybe picking favorites from the group.
3) I've only ever played D&D with friends before or people I already knew at least somewhat, so this would be a new experience but I'm super excited. I just want to get to know the other players a bit and help everyone feel comfortable.
4) For sure, I have a little bit of acting experience in theatre and improv and just love getting into character and creating meaningful stories. Of course it's always fun to laugh outside of character though as well.
5) Definitely willing and excited to do so.
6) Looking for something like what you described in your genre section, I'm a big fan of both Tolkien and Martin as well and enjoy aspects of both of their worlds. A story that is hopeful and magical but still somewhat realistic and serious/darker at times.
1. Weekends work best, and I'll be available at any time during them.
2. I've been in some dnd campaigns, but they've all fallen flat pretty quickly so I only have a few experiences. I didn't have many positive ones, but something I would enjoy would be effort put into building the party dynamic so it actually feels like you're a part of a group of adventurers. What I didn't enjoy was the lack of roleplay in the previous campaigns I was in and when the dm was way too rigid with the group and forced you along the story at a weird pace, or the complete opposite where the dm would just let the players go of the rails completely and destroy any story that was going on.
3. Not particularly.
4. Because of the lack of roleplay in the other games I was in, I don't have a ton of experience, but I love the idea of it and it honestly seems like a blast.
5. 100% yes.
6. Just a well-thought-out that focuses on the characters and lets them grow throughout the story.
1) I’ve just started playing a few months ago, my favorite thing is everything about the game and the only negative I got so far is the time wasted by some PCs in the game. Not every player learns his character and sometimes we are all waiting in a session for someone who didn’t do the homework.
2) In the last campaign the DM gave an extra feat in the beginning, I appreciated that ;)
3) I love role playing, that’s why am here.
4) Yes, I want to find a long term campaign
6) Not looking for nothing in particular but I would like something with a story and good battles, a mix if you will.
I hope there is still a place for me, add me on discord please:
What days work best for you? Weekdays (except for Tuesday) after 5:30EST or any time weekends!
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player… I've enjoyed every instance of player interaction I've had. Getting to know each other, talking together, making friends in character. A dislike is my last GM, who felt the need to be a hardass rules lawyer like all the time. We were there for story; he was there for mechanics. Is there anything from previous campaigns that you wish was in other campaigns? Nothing specifically, other than good vibes and good people!! Do you enjoy role-playing? Literally more than anything else about D&D. I sometimes prefer systems like WoD because they have (in my experience) a higher focus on RP than 5E does. Are you willing to commit to a long-term campaign? Sign me the HELL up.
What type of story are you looking for in a campaign? Give me some good lore, something that's equal parts backstory interweveing and world plot. Be forgiving and work with your players.
Sundays work the best and evenings after 7 PM PST. My Saturdays are filled because I DM two games back-to-back.
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player…
I have not been a player in a very long time, but my favorite experience was DM narrated combat. I decided to use it in my own games to give combat some more life beyond you hit and deal this much damage. I personally dislike when rules are followed to the letter. I think creativity within reason should be respected and can give way to some epic moments.
Is there anything from previous campaigns that you wish was in other campaigns?
My father created a 600-page campaign using role master that he played numerous times. I had the pleasure of playing in it when I was in my teenage years with other friends and family. It involved many story arcs that collided in a symphony at the end of a three-year campaign. Many of these story arcs only happened because of our character actions. I think that is something that I have tried to replicate in my campaigns and I’d like to see it in other games.
Do you enjoy role-playing?
Yes, I roleplay in the first person and utilize accents. I moved my games onto Foundry VTT using video chat either through discord or JITSI after the pandemic and have not returned to in person because it works too well. I wouldn’t consider myself a ‘hardcore role player’ as I do break character at times to ease tension if other players are finding it hard to get in character themselves.
Are you willing to commit to a long-term campaign?
Yes, I can commit to about four hours of game time a week. My schedule might change in the Spring of 2022, but it depends on several factors.
What type of story are you looking for in a campaign?
A heavy role play experience with a central goal and many arcs created and followed through by players.
I should always be able to make sun/sat given notice. I work some weekday evenings (no more than 3 a week), but I only find out which the Friday before.
I have only ever been a DM and haven't had the chance to play. But an experience I enjoyed was when I was RPing an ghost in an abandoned manor and the party had to try really hard to play into the ghosts fantasy or risk angering it (they ended up angering it anyway because they were stealing). An experience I didn't enjoy was when I had prepped for a session and was amped, then a player fell asleep on call. My schedule will change late August as I will stop work and go to college classes.
I think it would be cool to have investments or side projects you could work on, like magic experiments, owning a property, or gathering materials to get a cool magic item made.
I enjoy role playing a lot. I've even looked into other table tpp games because DnD doesn't always provide the best narratives (more than half the rules are combat) Are you willing to commit to a long-term campaign?
Yes, absolutely.
I want a story where there are consequences for actions. I want there to be fun parts followed by stressfull/upsetting moments. From reading the description the world sounds amazingand any story you make I'd love to be a part of.
Im currently in Australia on GMT+10. 2pm for you will mean 8am for me During the week. This is fine for me as I’ll be at work during the week and I can play. I just need a few moments here and there to work. Im also fine on the weekends.
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player… I’ve only played 1 game so I’m a noob, but I truly enjoyed my first character who I created as non-stereotype Cleric who was more of an Outcast who turned his healing skills to mask his true plans; Money, power and domination.
What I truly hated was a lot of my plans were divulged through chat, so the Other player would try to use that to thwart my plans. I would’ve liked my plans to be a secret to all so I can put on a charming face, but also have an ulterior motive for my choice of words.
Is there anything from previous campaigns that you wish was in other campaigns? I’ve only played 1 game, but I don’t think you can really compare. I‘ve watched a few D&D on youtube and they all have their own flair, but really it’s the players that make the campaign. If the players are getting along or if there is drama don’t take it personally, then that’s what makes the campaign fun.
Do you enjoy role-playing?
Oh I love it. Especially when I made my character less “Cookie-cutter”. I had to really plan ahead because I had to respond to questions posed to the group which will lead them to a direction I wanted without raising suspicion.
Are you willing to commit to a long-term campaign?
Im willing to commit if you are.
What type of story are you looking for in a campaign?
Im hoping for a campaign which is heavy on Roleplay and challenges in battle.
Questionnaire What days work best for you? Best days would be Friday thru Sunday with time evening to afternoon from friday to sunday as workable. I can possible make a weekday work.
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player…
Best Experience was a dM motivating me to create a truly great backstory vs just throwing a character together I wanted. It made the character my own vs just a stat character. An experience I disliked was where a player caused a fellow player to fall unconcious. He did heal but felt he could have addressed it with an rp outside of combat vs following thru and attacking the player.
Is there anything from previous campaigns that you wish was in other campaigns?
I would like a good group that vibes well. Found one and it really set the bar as far as all were completely different yet relaxed and there to enjoy.
Do you enjoy role-playing?
I do and am getting more and more into wanting to get it right for the character. Are you willing to commit to a long-term campaign?
Yes I would love it and your two authors explain it perfectly why I want a long term.
What type of story are you looking for in a campaign?
A story that grabs my attention and leave me breathless at other times. Actions have consequences and critical thinking should be used sometimes vs always trying to smash your way through although that can be fine too with the right mix of players.
I definitelylove role playing. I try to create deep back stories, even though all of that information doesn't make it into the "world". It's there, in my mind, helping to shape my character's actions. I have a character that just died (prematurely... for some reason the DM wiped the whole party), and would love to bring her back. She was quite well-developed. But I also enjoy creating brand new characters, and have a few ideas floating around in my head.
What days work best for you? Best times for me would be weekdays during the evenings PST, say after 6 or 7pm, except for Fridays. To be transparent, I am still in the campaign with the DM that wiped the party, mostly due to it being the DM's first campaign. We play on the weekends, which is why that time may be difficult for me now. I want to give him another chance, but I am also a bit cautious after what happened. That means, I may not wish to continue if he does something similar again.
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player… Loved: My character was a warlock, and this other character was a dopey halfling monk, who followed her around a bit too much. My character was looking through books in a dungeon library when the mon walked in and started rummaging through the books rather roughly. I told him to go to the room with the marble statue and see if he could dig up anything interesting in order to keep him from damaging any of the books i was looking through. He went off to another room where the statue was. My character found him later unconscious, bleeding from the head. He had tried to cut a piece of the statue off with his hands. Failing that, he used his head.
Hated: The DM was playing a queen who seemed not to care about her people. We were sent there (by an NPC played by the DM) to find out our next step in our quest. But the DM, playing as the queen, was not helpful at all. She provided vague answers and would not tell us what to do next. Just as we were about to leave, the queen told us what we needed to do, even though we (me, since I was the face of the party) had asked very direct questions about it, mentioning the character who had sent us to her. It all seemed very odd.
Is there anything from previous campaigns that you wish was in other campaigns? I am still new to campaigns. Played D&D back in high school many decades past :) So I don't have much to draw on right now. But I can say I love the RP/Combat ratios you mentioned: 70/30.
Do you enjoy role-playing? LOVE IT!!!
Are you willing to commit to a long-term campaign? If I like the rest of the group and the DM, then absolutely!
What type of story are you looking for in a campaign? I am looking for a rich story that can let our characters grow and find their way through the campaign. I would expect the other characters would have their player arcs too, so I would want something that can let us all find our way through our character development. Combat is absolutely fun. But watching your character grow and change is amazing!
What days work best for you? I'm UK-based, so 2pm PST is 10pm for me - I could comfortably do that for 3-4 on any day, though anything beyond that might be a bit of a stretch. Sundays I play in the morning (PST), but I'm good to go any time other than that.
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player… To give multiple examples of something I've enjoyed, I love it when the DM hooks onto something in my backstory as a surprise. I've had ex-fiancees show up in the thrall of the main villain. I've found notes with a missing parent's initials. I've had a DM take ideas I threw out in passing during a one-shot I ran, and adapt them into a dream sequence in the main game. I even had a DM "figure out" the naming convention for a Warforged character of mine, so he could pick an appropriate name for their "evil twin" and give me the terrifying moment of thinking we were about to boss-fight one of my own characters. Anything that latches onto elements of my backstory that I wouldn't expect to become relevant gives me a huge amount of satisfaction. The more tripped up and caught out I am by my own backstory, the better!
As for something I didn't enjoy: I've had some bad experiences with the party being railroaded by the GM, because we weren't doing things that we didn't know were expecting of us. DMing is hard, and sometimes the party needs a push to go in the right direction, but I'd much rather have a "hey, could you make sure someone suggests X in the planning meeting?" note than have the DM lift control of the character out of our hands and tell us what they did. That can end up in situations where your character does things you feel like they wouldn't, and that's just uncomfortable for everyone. D&D is a team effort, and I'm always happy to help the DM facilitate the story if I know what's needed of me in advance.
Is there anything from previous campaigns that you wish was in other campaigns? I enjoy games that make plenty of use of skills. I really like the Xanathar's options for having tool proficiencies help out with other areas (calligrapher's supplies proficiency helping you discern things about a letter, etc), and I feel like switching the attribute for a skill check (using your strength to intimidate, using wisdom to find a good hiding place rather than just stealth/dex, etc) doesn't get played around with enough. I've played games that have used some sort of reputation or renown mechanic as well: I had a DM who let us use our level as part of skill rolls when we were trying to leverage our fame/reputation. Quirky little mechanics like that, or throwing in timers, or little on-screen minigames bring me a lot of enjoyment, because it shakes up the norm a bit.
Do you enjoy role-playing? Definitely enjoy it, though my current game is a little more relaxed about it than some of the ones I've been in previously. I apologise in advance about the accents: they aren't necessarily good, but they do help keep me in character.
Are you willing to commit to a long-term campaign? Definitely.
What type of story are you looking for in a campaign? I'm open to most things, as long as there's some character exploration/development along the way. I'm a big fan of intrigue and twists, and I enjoy the small/personal victories more than the big world-saving ones a lot of the time. I'm just as proud of saving an ally's tiny village of potato farmers as I am of saving a city of people I don't know.
My name is Jonathan, I have played D&D off and on for years, haven’t played since 4e, would love to join for a long campaign, Wednesday and Sunday work best for me. I enjoy all aspects of D&D especially role playing.
1. Sunday's will almost always work for me (the store I work at is closed on Sunday's)
2. My favorite parts about combat at least is when someone finds a way to cheese the shit out of it and end it in a hilarious way (via explosive legs of oil and wine or aoe low damage effect killinglarge amountsof goblins)
2. The worst part is when a player gets really salty at another or are simply excessively spiteful (put a pile of dirt on a Paladin's armor for some simple vengeance for a previous action and he attempted to kill my lower level ranger while he used misty step to get close. The dm had to step in to stop him from killing my character)
3.Dynamic battles (where fights are not necessarilyturn based and more designed to be cinematic and flashy) albeit it is a very time consuming effort.
4. I enjoy roleplaying when one person doesn't take over the hole session by centering the roleplaying around them.
5. All campaigns I have been a part of have been cut off early ( longest was about 7 sessions) so I want a real experience.
6. I want a story that is flexible towards the players shenanigans and actual interacts with their backgrounds
Hi! 100% new at this, maybe someone can point me in the direction of a no-experience friendly group. I'm a stay at home mom and so I'm always available! Someone recommended d&d to me so I'm trying it out.
What days work best for you? I'm East Coast US and I work a 9-5, so M W Th or F after 6:30PM EDT, or anytime on Sunday.
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player… I once played a mini-campaign where I played someone on the run from the law and my friend, unbeknownst to me, created a character who was secretly a bounty hunter trying to bring me in. It was wacky fun, but the kind that the DM needs to check in about without spoiling the surprise.
I LOVE to be surprised. I also like weird and unique game mechanics.
The only thing I really dislike is being too letter-of-the-law with rules and mechanics. I feel like those are meant to help you create conflict and challenge that makes your story rewarding, or take you into unexpected directions, not hold you back and punish you. Rules lawyering sucks.
Is there anything from previous campaigns that you wish was in other campaigns? I like when players and DMs are really descriptive about their combat moves and give it a nice, cinematic feel. I love flavor.
Do you enjoy role-playing? I LOVE role-playing and I WILL subject a table to my terrible accent work and I will not accept criticism thank you.
Are you willing to commit to a long-term campaign? Yes! My DM just had a baby so our group is taking a 1-2 year break and I need another campaign to play.
What type of story are you looking for in a campaign? I like campaigns that are set in worlds where things continue to happen even without the players' input. I like how real and lived in it feels. But what I value most in a campaign is its responsiveness to the characters and that its tied to the characters' stories. I'm more invested in a story that has big personal stakes for the characters than big personal stakes for the world, but I still want our characters' to face challenging choices that can impact other people.
I'm Sam & hydrospanners#1017 on discord if you're interested. HMU!

I would love to join your campaign
Sundays are the best day for me.

Weekdays (except for Tuesday) after 5:30EST or any time weekends!
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player…
I've enjoyed every instance of player interaction I've had.

What days work best for you?
I've even looked into other table tpp games because DnD doesn't always provide the best narratives (more than half the rules are combat)
Are you willing to commit to a long-term campaign?
Yes, absolutely.
I want a story where there are consequences for actions. I want there to be fun parts followed by stressfull/upsetting moments. From reading the description the world sounds amazingand any story you make I'd love to be a part of.

What days work best for you?
Im currently in Australia on GMT+10. 2pm for you will mean 8am for me During the week. This is fine for me as I’ll be at work during the week and I can play. I just need a few moments here and there to work.
Im also fine on the weekends.
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player…
I’ve only played 1 game so I’m a noob, but I truly enjoyed my first character who I created as non-stereotype Cleric who was more of an Outcast who turned his healing skills to mask his true plans; Money, power and domination.

What days work best for you?
Any day, can work around them mostly

Hi there!
I definitely love role playing.

Loved:
My character was a warlock, and this other character was a dopey halfling monk, who followed her around a bit too much.
Hated:
The DM was playing a queen who seemed not to care about her people.

Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player…
To give multiple examples of something I've enjoyed, I love it when the DM hooks onto something in my backstory as a surprise.
7. Eadinize#4830 just dm me
Hi! 100% new at this, maybe someone can point me in the direction of a no-experience friendly group. I'm a stay at home mom and so I'm always available! Someone recommended d&d to me so I'm trying it out.

I'm East Coast US and I work a 9-5, so M W Th or F after 6:30PM EDT, or anytime on Sunday.
Give an example of an experience you’ve had as a player that you personally enjoyed, and an experience you have personally disliked as a player…
I once played a mini-campaign where I played someone on the run from the law and my friend, unbeknownst to me, created a character who was secretly a bounty hunter trying to bring me in.
