I've DMed for a few years for my friends, I have tons of irl equipment but only have a few weeks of discord games under my belt. I'm interested in this possibly becoming a full time job but I wonder what is expected in these games. Are they making PDFs and have sound effects, or is it basically just regular D&D over discord?
I'm willing to put my all into this but would like some observations from people that have played in or run these games in the past. Please and thank you
Hey! My advice is do what you're comfortable with. You'll get the players who appreciate your style regardless. Also, take a look at StartPlaying.Games - they're who I deal with, and we have a discord server for the DMs. Lots of good advice there.
If you want to learn how to be a better dm my server is looking for more dms so if you're interested we would be willing to train you and work with you
I DM professionally and book games over at startplaying.games Ile bullet point what I provide to give you a bit of an idea
Secure payments Safety tools at the table and content discussion pre game Enabled sharing of all my DnDbeyond content so you can roll up a player no matter what source material you own and update as the new books come out Gameplay using beyond and roll20 together A dedicated discord server - players can interact or chat with me between games and we keep session notes and keep track of loot there I pay for a bot that helps with music and some admin stuff on the discord server Syrinscape subscription and other mood/ambience music played through discord For my own setting stuff I make custom maps and such and even in modules I add to them where needed If running a module like mad mage etc, I have the official maps or alternatives if needed I can do some voices, some great some not so great but more importantly I act out NPC's as they would interreact with PC's And I study the heck out of whatever we are running so I am prepared for whatever the players throw at me... and if not I have studied and continue to practice improv skills.
Others that do this simply have discord and theatre of the mind and those are some pretty amazing games. Its all about the DM being able to facilitate a good time.
Its a ton of work, but its incredibly rewarding. I love this game so much, if you do to, and are willing to put in the work you will do great.

become friends with your players every now and then ask them if you can improve on anything but dont go easy on them that annoys some
