WHAT KIND OF GAME IS THIS?
Mortis is a very different setting from what you're probably used to. This world is bleak and unrelenting, and it undoubtedly doesn’t take much to end up dead. In fact, it’s painfully easy, specifically if you seek to construct characters you would ordinarily play in standard fantasy frameworks, where you’re a mighty hero who’s prepared to handle any challenge and smite evildoers by the dozens. In this game, conflict is ever perilous. Know that many individuals will not pause to deceive you, take from you, or murder you, should they see fit. Use your head, be wary of what you say, and always look out for yourself, because no one else will. One final thought to keep in mind is that you are not supposed to beat every challenge placed in front of you. There is no ridicule in running away if it means you live to fight another day. Optional conflicts are frequently the hardest, so don’t run at the first chance to be viciously murdered.
What is a living campaign?
You could compare a living campaign world to today's MMORPGs, even when you're not logged in the world continues to move forward with or without you. Quests and storylines can be completed throughout the week, and it's very much a drop-in and drop-out experience. We're going to be playing as often as we can and the storyline will move forward regardless of who's there and who isn't. We also have a number of 'metagame' resources located on our website, we encourage our players to contribute to the world building and development of their characters. Likewise, we use achievements that reward prestige points (experience), new abilities, crafting systems, property ownership and more. Furthermore, we are also on the lookout for game masters who are interested and currently in running games for the setting as well, this would give players a chance to run more than one character and play in different parts of the world to experience new things all while changing the surrounding setting. Player choice is key to making this work. Your choices will matter and will have a lasting impact on the game world and the storyline as we move forward.
We're looking for collaborative players, not consumers.
A collaborator player is someone who is excited, they think about the game outside the immediate session. They have a drive, an excitement for the setting, they want to build characters and stories in the world. They want to help expand the lore and to contribute in meaningful and fun ways. Furthermore, they role-play, they're active in the community, and they're a joy to be around. These are the types of players we're seeking. We want to create a community of great people, and this is the first step to doing that.
Consumer players just want something to do in their spare time, when they aren't in the middle of a game they aren't paying attention to the discord, they aren't having a conversation about the game, they aren't planning anything, etc. They're not here to think very hard about the game. They just want to kill a few hours. Sometimes that's okay, but generally, we're not looking for those sorts of players. We want folks who are amped about the setting. Enjoy sword and sorcery, dark fantasy, and want to contribute. If you're a consumer-focused player, you probably won't get much out of this community. Frankly, we don't want you either.
YOU WILL PROBABLY ENJOY THIS GAME IF:
You want to play/try something that isn't D&D 5th Edition.
You enjoy narrative combat and coming up with solutions to problems.
You enjoy immersing yourself in lore, writing your own, and helping to build a world.
You're an experienced player or a new player who is self-motivated.
You think contending with gruesome alien horrors is awesome.
You like the idea of matchlock pistols, swords, dangerous sorcery, and forgotten tombs.
You have a thing for Dark Fantasy and Grimdark settings with serious tones and characters.
You like OSR games, simple rules, fast character creation, and don't care about "builds".
You're okay with the potential of your character dying, this is a dangerous world, after all.
You're looking for a text based game and role-play, with optional voice games.
YOU WILL PROBABLY HATE THIS GAME IF:
You're expecting this to be 5th Edition.
You're not interested in actually creating a character.
You don't enjoy having to describe your actions during combat, or elsewhere.
You're not interested in world building or lore, and are just looking to kill a few hours.
You're an experienced or new player who isn't willing to put in the time to contribute to the setting.
You don't like your characters dying. (Seriously, if you don't like the potential of death, leave.)
You don't enjoy fast-paced, rules-light games. You prefer to create "builds" and crunch.
You don't care for grim fantasy settings.
You want to try to create your favorite anime character in a tabletop game.
THE SETTING
Six-hundred years ago the necropolis fell from the sky; debris rained down and devastated entire cities, kingdoms and nations. War between these feeble rogue states erupted, and the people suffered for it. Uncaring, alien elves, enslaved all who crossed their path, forced to work at their pleasure palaces and to serve the whims of their new masters. The dwarves hid from conflict, content to toil away in their great underground cities. Their knowledge gave birth to iron-monstrosities that whined and spewed smoke and steam, fire blazing in their eyes. Humans did as they always had; they fought and killed each other over land, resources, religion, and the right to call themselves lords or kings.
The ancient necropolis, meanwhile, sat dormant, until a band of would-be robbers entered its corrupted halls. Inside they found the Slender Crown, the rotting god from another world. As the adventurer's screams echoed through the chambers of the ancient palace of death, droves of demons, undead, and things far too horrible to name spewed forth into the world.
Now, in the Age of Death, a cold mist dominates Ayo'tha. Entire cities wall themselves off within their borders to hide from the terrors that lurk outside once the burning light of Aith'na sinks and darkness consumes the countryside. You are a foolhardy adventurer, you seek your fortunes outside the cities walls. Searching ancient ruins, seeking out artifacts and relics of powers long forgotten. You'll either live long enough to reap the benefits of your exploits and claim power, or die alone in some dark corner of the world. Either way, this is your story.
