Right now we are a few sessions in to a Call of the Netherdeep game and had a player who had to leave do to new scheduling conflicts. It is a pretty good group going so far and we need a fifth player to round things out and meet the number the book suggests.
Looking for a good player that can fit into a group pretty easily.
Please respond with a character pitch, as well how you think rolling a Natural 20 to persuade a shopkeeper to hand over an item for free should be ruled.
I've got a few characters that I can drop into a game depending on the needs. But I fell in love with a character that I created for a Christmas one-shot.
His name's Amthor, an older druid/Circle of Stars bugbear, that's a bit of a mix between Radagast and a pirate. He's a bit of a grump but is a big ol' softy at the end of the day. (Let me know if you'd like any other background/details.)
And I believe if a player rolls a natural 20 Persuasion roll to convince a shopkeeper to hand over an item, it really depends on the value/importance of the item. BUT I do think that the overall total of the roll including the modifier comes into play. If it's a magical item of sorts that is worth 1,000 gold on a total roll of 21, I don't think I'm handing that item over as a DM. Am going to give that player a serious discount? Absolutely! If it was a 21 roll for a common healing potion, I could see myself handing that over. I hope that all makes sense is maybe what you're looking for haha.
Thanks for reading! (First time reaching out to forms like this, let me know if you need anything else. Not a first time player, been DMing for the past year or so, the game just recently fell apart due to scheduling. And been playing for years now.)
For a character I have a few, I can add depending on party needs for rounding out the party. Personalities will be based on class and be made to be an easy fit in with group structure.
as for the shop keep question my answer is simple, the dm shouldn’t call for a role for such a request, if a player ask for a role to get it for free the answer should be no from the dm because no matter how persuasive you are, no right minded shop keep should say yes. This is my opinion on all checks, if you can not succeeded on a check a dm should not make you roll for it and should just say no to the request to make a check. Now if dm a does decide to call for a role for that request, and a player does roll a nat 20, the lowest price the npc could sell the items at should be offered
Hello there my character idea is a fire genasi monk she is quite impressive physically but she is not the best with people so any time she tries to be charming there is a good chance she will screw something up with her words
Fir the natural 20 question I believe that the shop keeper should not give away the item for free but will laugh at the request and respond with something like “no chance for the freebie. But I like your effort you put in so here is a discount.” You should get something for a roll like that
hi, my character is a triton barbarian pirate names leviathan (Levi for short), he may not be the smartest person around but he is honest and has the charisma to get people to like him. He may not look strong but if anyone hurts his friends he turns into a beast.
As for the nat 20 question I would first bass it off of if there is some reason the shop keeper would give away anything for free. Like has the player/party saved something or someone the shop keepers treasures more than the items, if so then yes sure. if not are they regular customers and is the shop keeper really friendly with them, if so then if they can get a dc 25 yes otherwise i would give a discount (because its a nat 20 i would at least do half off). Finally if they have only spoken to the shop keeper a few times and only bought things a few times before there would be no chance for getting anything free maybe a small discount with a nat 20
Hi there, the character I would have in mind is a half drow echo knight named Cyris Duendalos, of Den Duendalos. Being one of the youngest members of the family and one of the few that has yet to be consecuted, he has taken his own path in order to differentiate himself from the rest of the lower ranking members of the Den.
With a natural 20 to try and get a freebee item, it depends on the ruling a DM is using. With 5e rulings natural 20's don't mean an automatic success, so a natural 20 wouldn't guarantee a free item, but depending on the actual item and the merchant's demeanor towards the character they may be inclined to give a discount at the very least. After all, people have bills to pay, that's why they're selling their goods to begin with.
With 4 existing players I'd probably want to see what was already in game so I could come up with a character who compliments the groups vibe while filling a unique roll.
That said, here's a character pitch. Barnabus Melton, failed student turned unappreciated servant of a noble wizard. A fighter/wizard multiclass used to doing his master's dirty work and both anxious and underconfident given that his magical talents plateaued.
A natural 20 should be honored because it feels great and you want that excitement at your table, but not to the point where it allows for something impossible, like a shopkeeper giving away his inventory for nothing at all. That said, I'd try to find a way for the shopkeeper to still receive tangible value in place of money. If it's something small, perhaps the shopkeeper offers to let him do some menial task that he doesn't want to do himself to purchase it in trade, the bard can be made to perform at his daughter's birthday party, the paladin can be made to sweep and dust, or the barbarian can be recruited to move a really heavy crate from the back room. If it's something expensive, then improvising a side quest that can be accomplished concurrently with the existing plot, maybe that same daughter has been locked in the big bad's tower, or the shopkeeper needs somebody to tell the local gang leader he won't be paying for 'protection' this month.
I'm on the side of role filling with the roster of characters I have since there are already 4 existing players.
Elwyn Iathrana- High Half-Elf, Sorcerer/Divine Soul, Warlock/The Undead.
Elwyn was an avid collector of rare and unusual items who once held aspirations to open his museum or gallery. He went to whatever lengths in his pursuit to amass a collection of such notoriety and whether it was his insatiable curiosity, unbridled ambition, or avarice Elwyn came to own a cursed object. This object would force him into a pact with an undead patron transforming his hobby into a means of survival. Elwyn now travels in hopes of finding an item that can help him sever this pact allowing him to return to his once peaceful hobby. Even though the journey is dangerous Elwyn can’t help but smile at the thought of finding such an item- an item to not only free him but be worthy enough to be the centerpiece of his collection.
As for the nat20 persuasion roll I believe that it should incur the "best possible outcome or reaction" and not necessarily want the player wants/desires. Of course there are circumstances not applied to this so for instance if this is the players first ever interaction with the shopkeeper the nat20 might provide a decent discount. If the players are returning customers and have a friendly relationship with the shopkeeper then it would be a more generous discount. If the shopkeeper is aware of impending doom and knows that the party is seeking to prevent it, then the nat20 would justify the shopkeeper loaning out said item for free. So for me Nat20s aren't the "I get what I want" per say but it does create the more favorable outcome and what that outcome is would be circumstantial.
Bumping this back up to the front page. Still looking for a 5th player to join a group of a draconic bloodline sorceror, a circle of stars druid, a oath of devotion paladin and a battlesmith artificer. Starting at level 5 for you, jumping in on a ongoing Monday at 7 EST campaign.
I'm Jason. I'm into RP, I do a voice and I love just having fun character moments with other PC's and NPC's. I don't fudge rolls (its more fun when you fumble and adapt) and I love trying to come up with creative ways to solve puzzles. I also have a good headset and mic.
Like everyone, I have a few characters on the backburner that I'd love to play. I like to give my characters a few traits and a basic backstory that I then expand on once I know what kind of campaign they're gonna be in.
A Lore Bard with two levels in Rogue, that uses their charm and cunning to con people with more money than sense. They live fast and loose, they're up for anything and just want to have fun.
An Order of Scribes Wizard that seeks higher learning so they can become rich, powerful and one day immortal. They don't plan on becoming a lich or anything like that but aren't opposed to delving into the darker magics.
A Cleric that wishes to spread the name of their god, the god is not worshipped or even known to the common folk. In order to spread the religion they erect shrines and perform miracles in their gods name. They lived in seclusion for a long time so they are a tad naive and too trusting and this often gets them in trouble.
If the player just rolled without permission then they shouldn't get the item. If the DM asked for the roll then it's up to the DM and they can decide if the Nat 20 gets them the item or it might just get them a discount on the item instead. DM always has final say.
Hi I'm Kris. I'd be super happy to join you in your game. I'm currently wanting to play a Bloodhunter. Basic idea is someone who actively looks out threats for payment or glory to either find or protect people, lost items, or the greater good when the occasion arises. He has been trained in this but his order was actively destroyed by some cult/big bad leaving him hiding his true identity and specific skills until he knows the people he is working with/for. He kind of fell into from a young age having lost my family due to monster attack. So started as a revenge thing but as i grew older came to realize it was just a part of living in a dangerous world and now serve to make my way in the world while protecting those when i can. Otherwise I am pretty good at it so i use my skills where appropriate.
As far as the shop keeper goes I think that no matter what you roll anything that happens must be within the realm of reason. So if the item is relatively worthless and the characters had already bought a bunch of stuff then maybe they consider it a cost of doing business and hand it over. But if it is something that costs say 1,000 gold then i don't think any high level roll is getting that item for free. Maybe the shopkeeper would say if you like so much i cut you a hell of deal and make what would cost 1,000 cost like 500. Or if it were something that was absolutely essential for the greater good and they are a lawful good character then maybe they give it. Obviously there is alot of room to work with here but i think it needs to make sense and a roll shouldn't make someone act completely against their nature.
