Hello! My name is Jor (she/her), I'm 28, and I'm a Canadian living in Finland.
I've been running a long-term campaign since December 2021. As you know, online groups can be tough - while I still have 3 of my original 5 players, as well as one more recent one (although it feels like they've been with us forever), we've seen many others come and go for varying reasons which has caused our story and focus to change a lot. Unfortunately, we're about to lose another original player as their schedule has changed, which brings us back down to 3. With this, we've decided to treat this as a fresh start. One of the remaining three players will be rerolling PCs, and we'll be starting off somewhere new in the world with renewed goals and stories to be told. So, with all of this happening - what better time to bring in a couple new PCs and kick off this fresh new start?
My world is completely homebrew and being created as we go along, so don't expect something completely and fully fleshed out. The story takes place 32 years past the end of a siege by devils upon the continent, which saw great loss and destruction. One kingdom in particular has capitalized on this as a means of expanding their own borders, causing tension and conflict throughout the land. This coming Tuesday I'm meeting with my remaining players to discuss which direction they'd like to take, so I can't tell you right now what our new theme will be or which hook they'll choose to follow - but that gives you an idea of the setting, at the very least. We'll most likely be following through with one of their personal character arcs to get us back into the swing of things, then seeing where things go from there.
In terms of play style, we lean fairly heavily into RP - we can sometimes go a couple sessions without combat - but that will be between more classic dungeon-crawl-style adventures. Overall, there is a very slow-building lore that you're learning bits and pieces of as you go along - some will be connected, others might not, and you might not realize some of it until much later. So, I do ask for an adaptable and immersed player focused on forming connections with both PCs and NPCs, as well as the world around them. While the tone of the world itself is serious and, at times, dark, the remaining party members aren't always the most serious themselves - one PC in particular is EXTREMELY silly and really leans into the high energy goofiness and low intelligence, so you'll have to be okay with humour that sometimes comes out in the form of poor decisions. With that being said, all party members MUST be sociable and MUST work with the group - no evil PCs, no backstabbing, no constant drama. The goal is to have a cohesive group that cares about each other. You should also be aware that your actions do have consequences - they can build or burn bridges, and your reputation - and how you treat people - matters. You can't do whatever you want with no repercussions, so be aware of your choices and their implications.
As for my DMing style, I try to stick fairly closely to the rules for the purpose of fairness - I don't want someone to feel like an exception was made for someone else but not them. I will, however, make judgment calls that may go against rules as written, especially where logic and nuance may factor in to the equation. This will sometimes work in your favour, but sometimes, it may make things more difficult with added checks to see if something works. I'm not a voice actor - I'm very bad at it, actually - so don't expect a plethora of unique accents and voices. I will still speak in character as my NPCs, though, and do my best to convey their unique personalities through how they interact with you. I try to describe scenes and battles as vividly as possible to help you feel immersed in your surroundings.
Of course, we use some house rules - I won't list them all, but a few that may factor into your decision are:
Flanking gives +1 to your attack
Critical hit minimum damage - on a crit, the minimum damage you can do is average damage (so no rolling poorly when you crit)
Injury & critical injury table - upon going unconscious, you might sustain injuries with permanent or non-permanent in-game consequences
Exhaustion upon going unconscious or on revival from death
Resurrection rules (rolling to see if resurrection spells succeed or fail, so death matters)
No PVP - as I said, the party should be cohesive
Roll an arcana check if attempting to learn a magic item's properties on a short rest (in rules as written, you automatically learn all its properties if you spend a short rest doing so)
If you're interested and meet the requirements below, please fill out the template at the bottom of this post. If I think you might be a good fit, I'll reach out to you to learn more about you and give you some more details on the game to see if you'd be a good fit. Please don't take it personally if you aren't selected - not everyone is a perfect match, even if they're great people, and I'm really trying to ensure a cohesive group who get along well both in and out of session.
Requirements
Age: 20+. We are mostly between mid 20s-30.
D&D Beyond for character sheets, AboveVTT (an extension for Chrome) for maps. Very easy to get and use.
Kindness and respect are paramount. I do not tolerate any form of bullying, hate speech, racism, sexism, ableism, transphobia, homophobia, or anything of the sort.
Webcam preferred, but not required. Myself and one remaining player use ours most of the time.
Be present during sessions. It's normal to perhaps do a bit of browsing during shopping or during a scene with other PCs that you're not involved in, but you should still be paying attention. Show respect to your fellow players - it's annoying and disruptive to have to constantly catch someone up and repeat yourself because they weren't listening.
Don't be drunk or high during sessions.
Consistent attendance and punctuality. If you have to miss a session for an emergency or very important event, that's understandable. But you shouldn't be missing more than a session every couple months, nor should you be consistently late to sessions. We play on if we're missing 1 or 2 people, and we try to reschedule as little as possible. If you are struggling to attend or arrive on time consistently, you'll be removed.
Long term commitment. If you know now that you're only going to be able to play for 6 months, you need not apply. This is a long term game potentially going for a year or more, depending on where the story takes us.
