Are you looking for a gritty campaign that holds no punches, where the very land around you (and it seems everything else) is out to kill you? Are you looking for a sandbox campaign where you control your own destiny and have the ability to change the entire civilized world? What Lies Beneath is a dark themed, sandbox campaign where you are in control of your destiny. You shape the story and the world. Changes you make are permanent and will affect the rest of the world. Every session you will make decisions that will have permanent repercussions. At the same time, other factions will be moving about the world doing their "work". What kind of world will you make? Will you survive long enough to see?
For most, the world had shrunk down to an island.
The Chaos wars started over 250 years ago. 170 years of war had devastated not only the land, but the sea. Demons and later Fiends, Celestials, and even Fey gated into our plane as they chose to extend their universal war to our fragile planet. Nearly everything was destroyed, and nearly all mortals were killed. The last survivors of the "civilized" races fled to a large island a week’s sail from the main continent. This Island is called Duinryth. After their arrival, they began preparing for any final assault that might hit them. The assault never came.
The various groups on the island were already accustomed to working together for survival. This was a good thing since Duinryth is not a lush or fertile land. The races teamed up to fish, mine, and farm what they could. Magic was employed to assist the farmers in their endeavors. However, few mages, and almost no druids had survived the wars.
With diminishing supplies, housing & infrastructure to build, and order to maintain, resources were tight. No new ships were constructed. This was and is seen as a good thing since it hid their location from the rest of the world. ~70 years later (10 years ago), the situation started to become quite strained. Food yields were low. Fishing from the coastal boats had also taken a dive. And worst of all, it was starting to become common knowledge that the nations spell materials were dwindling.
Edeleth, the newly appointed queen at that time, met with her advisors and they decided that it would be necessary to branch out in search of more resources. The first ship was completed 9 years ago, and several more have been built since. Adventurers were sent out to seek not only resources, but knowledge of the outer world. When news reached the common folk that a holdfast had been constructed on the continent, a celebration was had by all in the kingdom. The commoners had realized that hope had not failed them. However, news came back about the continent itself. A hostile land, full of demons, fey and other creatures. Strange diseases and magics that threatened people for simply walking near them. Although fear of this land spread through the populace, there was still some hope as the creatures there would provide many of the needed spell components.
Since that time, Queen Edeleth has been inviting promising adventurers to travel to the main land. There, adventurers can hunt these creatures and harvest the spell materials. These materials are very valuable, and it is said that many adventurers have become immensely wealthy this way. Adventures go out from the fort (Darkclaw Hold), hunt the creatures, and sell the components to the garrison in the hold. Rinse and repeat. Very profitable. There are many places, ruined cities, subterranean castles, demonic groves, ect. yet to be explored. And the supply of creatures is almost unending.
Good news! You have been invited to an audience with Queen Edeleth herself. There is a room at the best inn in Ylchaster set aside for you. It appears that congratulations are in order!
