I am looking for 4 players to join my homebrewed world in DnD 5e. This game will take place on the continent of Telathria. Here is a quick excerpt of the prompt to help you guys understand more about the world.
The Mortal Kingdoms are in turmoil as opportunistic leaders declare war on their neighbors after a Draconic attack led by the Five Banes (Cult of the Dragon Rework). As suffering increases in the world, so too does factions of opportunists looking to seize power by any means necessary. The world is ever changing and reactive to the party's decisions. The world is yours, will you take it or protect it?
This is the world map of Telathria. There are tons of settlements, oddities, and Kingdoms to explore. If a location you have interest in isn't on the map and if it fits in the world, it can be added into the story per your background.
The game is a homebrewed world featuring staple points of the Forgotten Realms lore and some characters from it while using original locations, themes, and characters of my own.
More about this game:
This game is a hex-crawl, open world sandbox game that is driven by character stories and the decisions that you make. Take time to calculate how you will get from one location to another as time is always an important factor. The game encourages cooperation, planning, and creative thinking in order to achieve your goals. The game also features explorable sections of the world where the party can go at any time. However, be warned that some areas may not be level appropriate for the party....yet. Use your best judgement to decide if you want to attack that thing you just encountered. (Think of your first Giant encounter in Skyrim when you're fresh out of Whiterun. You don't have to fight it, but you can certainly try! Caelid from Elden Ring is another good example. At the start of the game you can get there, but you're going to have an uphill challenge.)
What Format Will We Use?
We will use Roll20 with the Beyond 20 browser extension and Discord for voice/music
Weekly or Bi-Weekly?
I prefer weekly because it is difficult to keep momentum going in a bi-weekly game. I've ran bi-weekly games before and it's hard to keep that steam going for me personally.
When are you planning to host the game?
Ideally I would like to play on Saturday or Sunday late afternoon/into the evening. So around 5pm CST on either day is what I'm going for.
Do I prefer new or experienced players?
New and experienced players are welcome. I will need to help new players get adjusted to this game first and foremost because a sandbox game can get overwhelming. Experienced players will fit right in. However, if you are new I ask that you make yourself open to suggestions that will help you understand the game better if you are struggling and need help.
Is this game casual or hardcore?
Do you want to play more cautiously or do you want to kick the door open and start swinging? The choice is yours. But while the choice is yours, talk it over with the party. Don't pull the metaphorical boss if your party isn't wanting to fight that thing. This can lead to inter-party conflict and a lack of enjoyment at the table if a player is constantly putting the party in danger by proxy through their actions.
A note about Murder Hobo'dry (lol)
However, murder hobos be warned: you are free to do whatever you want, but not free from consequences, especially from the guards and the elite figures in settlements who will be beyond your power (in the beginning of the game especially). You can certainly try to do what your heart desires, just know that settlements and government officials won't be too happy if you go around slaying everyone for no reason.
Are any classes banned?
There are only two classes that I don't allow in my games and it is the coffeelock (Warlock/Sorcerer combination) and The Peace Domain Cleric (it is silly busted). Optimizers are welcome though! If you want to play something like a Barbarian/Circle of Moon Druid (the old faithful build) you are more than welcome to. I don't worry about builds that are optimized as some enemies you face will simply change their tactics to adjust to your level of power.
What about RP?
I love RP and it is one of my favorite things about this game. I encourage RP, I will voice act alongside you and I reward players for partaking in it. To be honest, I consider RP to be the most important part of the game. Without RP, combat would just be bland stats smashing against other stats. You do not have to partake in RP at all times if you aren't comfortable however. Just know that it is encouraged and if you're having trouble with it, please let me know and I'll do what I can to help you.
About leveling
Just like any skill that you pick up IRL, learning the beginning parts of it is relatively easy compared to mastering it. The campaign will start at lvl 3 per usual, and you'll gain levels fairly quickly throughout the sessions. However, once you hit about lvl 10 and head into mastery territory, the levels will begin to slow down. I prefer to give players their fun abilities early (especially lvl 5 for clerics for example) and then increase that road to mastery later on.
More about me as a DM
My favorite part about DM'ing is sitting back and watching the party come up with plans on how to approach a problem in the world I've built. I really enjoy table cohesion and building friendships in the space we share. I am neutral as a DM, but as a player I can put myself in my players' shoes and understand how they must feel about any situation they're in. I love strategic combat, but don't feel deterred if you're new to the game and don't have a full grasp on your character's abilities. Most importantly, I'm here to make friends that I want to keep playing with for months to come in the world we've built together.
Quick Notes to Know
I am currently a full time college student (yes, even in the summer. Currently enrolled in 6 credit hours and 12 credit hours in the fall). There may be times when I need to take a week off to hit the homework. I am in the animation program so I may make content about our game and put it on my YouTube Channel! Just want everyone to know about that first and foremost.
About Session 0
I plan to have a session 0 where whoever joins the game can have a chance to get to meet their fellow table-mates in voice while we talk about expectations we have for the game, get to know each others' personalities and more. I believe a session 0 is one of the most important things a game should have because it gives players a chance to decide if they even want to commit to this game or not. I am in no rush to fill this game. If you're looking to fill something by next week and get going, I won't be able to give you that unfortunately. I'd rather take my time finding the right people who I know will fit because the long-term health of the game depends on it.
What to do next
I have a link here to fill out a Google Form to give me more information about you, your expectations for the game and other bits of information that will be helpful to the both of us.
Fill out the form and I'll get into contact with you if it seems like you'll be a good fit. Once I find enough people we'll have a session 0 and see how things go and go from there. There may be multiple session 0's so please be patient!
If you need to get a hold of me my discord handle is chadventure or simply message me on DnD beyond or comment in this thread.
Looking forward to meeting you guys and get to experience the one thing that we all play DnD for: Fun :)
Hey everyone, I had some people asking about the world map and locations in the game so I added the overworld map to the forum post. This helps with visual aid in understanding the continent and the locales that you may get to visit if you join the game. Hope this helps!
Also my apologies but this game is 18+. Sorry for the mix-up on that one if you've already applied to the game.
