08/03/25 NOTE: this group has now been playing for 2 months but we had a slot open due to unfortunate circumstances, so we are looking for 1 more payer.
Game: D&D 5e Group type: Discord / DnDBeyond, 5e 2024 rules (with some homebrew) Experience: Veteran Location/Timezone: US/Eastern Schedule: Sundays from 3:30pm to 8:30pm (± 1 hour), plus sometimes we have a second session during the week depending on everyone's availabilities Roles sought: Player (preference for veterans) Game style: Hardcore mix of combat and roleplay, lore-intense and with heavy enmeshment of character backstories into the narrative
My homebrew setting has a lot of elements from Forgotten Realms, but with its own spin & world history. I stick largely to 2024 5e rules, but do have some of my own homebrew thrown in and am willing to work with players to homebrew certain things they may want for their character. I tend to run more serious campaigns (with some humor in them, but still dominated by a serious tone), so joke characters are banned, and the character should work in a campaign with lots of serious moments.
The starting level will be level 7. The exact time of the sessions is being ironed out, but for now it looks like Saturdays from 5:30pm to 11pm EST. Depending on everyone's availabilities, I may try to have us play two sessions per week. The campaign will likely stretch out into the high levels and between 15 and 20 (depending on the exact course that you take the campaign onto).
If you are interested, fill out this google form. If I think you could be a good fit, I will reach out over Discord (handle: lotl42). We will play at least one oneshot together in the homebrew setting to confirm that we are a good fit for one another. We may require multiple oneshots to find enough players to start the campaign (looking to have 5 players total). The first one shot I am planning on running will be about 10 years before the start of the current campaign, so you can play the same character as for the campaign or a different character (and if it is the same character they could have a different build).
My requirements for players:
You must be committed to showing up for sessions. Except for emergencies, your attendance should be consistently high, and you should tell me as soon as possible if you need to miss a session. Your own personal schedule must be consistent enough that random disruptions to your ability to play must be highly unlikely (I'm sorry, but I have had players before who have been unable to continue in a campaign due to unreliability caused by their work schedules).
You must be heavily engaged in sessions during roleplay, driving the story forward in your discussions/actions both with other players and with NPCs, and ideally in a way that draws from your character's identity. I will work with you extensively before/during the campaign to flesh our who your character is and ground them in the world.
You must be comfortable with the mechanics of whatever you are playing enough that you can hold your own in combat, since I will throw some very difficult encounters your way.
You must be respectful to other players, and to myself as the GM. That includes being respectful of the boundaries between being a player vs a GM.
You must read all of these details well enough to notice this bullet point telling you that you should fill out the last question box in the google form that says "Anything else?" with the answer "I read the bullet point"
You must have a stable internet & voice setup so you can consistently communicate with me & the other players through discord voice chat and use the DnDBeyond interface.
You must have some familiarity with playing DnD 5e (and ideally at least a little with using the DnDBeyond interface). I'm sorry but I have learned the hard way that I, as a GM, am not a great fit for newer players.
What did you have in mind when you typed two sessions per week? Were you thinking Saturday and Sunday? And is I know you typed you were comfortable with 5e, but if I wanted to use a class from the third-party material here on the site, would I have to run it by you? (Kobold Press, Obojima, etc.)

Campaign status:
Currently 5 players, trying to fill a 6th slot.
Party just completed its 8th session (after a one shot + a session 0), and its first plot arc.
The party just leveled up to Level 8.
Party includes: barbarian, sorcerer, bard/paladin, rogue/paladin, and a druid. All major combat/utility categories are covered, so that leaves a lot of room for what a new character could come in as. The player who just left unexpectedly was the party's wizard.
When the new player joins, I will work with them extensively to flesh out their character's backstory in the world to ensure that their roleplay is as integral/interwoven to the plot as all existing characters.
Current adventure:
The party just dealt with some unexpected eldritch aberration appearances in a quiet rural area, including farmers turned into mind flayers and some missing townspeople & guards abducted by an aboleth. The party is trying to tie some notable loose ends, including searching for some remaining missing persons (related to a player character) and trying to find the source of how the aberrations got to this area, since they appear to have been smuggled there by an unknown party.
The party is now following the clues they found earlier to find potential leads on the nature of this insidious mind flayer plot. These clues are leading them to some settlements elsewhere on the continent, which they are headed towards while dealing with several other matters on the way. Other plotlines in play include some strange encounters with fey creatures, disturbing dreams, deals with devils, and encounters with dragons who have been permanently trapped in their humanoid visage.
This journey will take them through the Summerwind Forest, a vast forest that is the main homeland of elves in this world, and previously the center of power in an elvish empire that was restructured into the modern day continent-wide government. Along the way they are passing through some of the eclectic settlements of this region, contending with strange fey energies and entities hidden in the woods, and dealing with bizzare encounters along the long road to their destination.
For instance, they recently encountered a bunny on the road that had a boot tied to its hind leg with a rope, and were going to untie it because it looked pained and the druid used speak with animals to learn that "some bad men tied me up to this heavy boot and it hurts!!!" But, the party did not untie it because they discovered, just in time, that the bunny was actually a powerful demon that was trapped in this form (the boot keeps it locked into that form) by some adventurers who were sick of killing this same demon over and over again just for it to keep coming back and hunting them.
Once the party arrives at their destinations, they have their work cut out for them to pick up the threads of the mysterious plots they are trying to uncover.
