Campaign Primer Nell Sombra is a town caught between worlds. Its people came here seeking freedom, leaving behind the halls of their ancestors deep within the mountain above. They built a life on the open earth, under a wide sky, believing they had escaped the will of the goddess Ysera.
But there is no escape. Above Nell Sombra hangs the island they abandoned, its undermountain looming like a black crown. Massive crimson chains pierce the sky, binding the island to the earth, forged by Kuntagos, a god long dead. The goddess still dwells up there in her city, but the people below no longer climb to her gates.
Life on the ground has not been kind. From the Cold Frontier, the red oni raid without warning. Their chieftain, Aka the Defiler, calls down storms of red lightning and fights beside a polar bear as large as a mammoth. They do not raid for food or land. They raid for blood.
To the south, the kingdom of Ghydem blocks every road. Their fortress at Old Ford seals off the passes, keeping Nell Sombra out while they fight wars on two fronts against the armies of Torshalla and the undead cult of the god of death, Mal’kizar.
Nell Sombra is trapped. They cannot flee north, cannot go south, and cannot return to the city chained above them.
But now there are rumors. A pale-skinned oni walks the roads of the south, a Rift Breaker and Hero of the Realm named Kolti. He has come to end Aka’s reign, but he cannot do it alone. If Nell Sombra will not rise with him, they will burn beneath the red storm forever.
Campaign Details Divus Vult: Red Storm is a 10-15 session mini-campaign running alongside my main homebrew, Divus Vult. Two veterans from the main table will play; we are seeking new players to join them. If the fit is strong, you may be invited to the main campaign afterward. The main campaign began in January 2023 and is currently at session 111.
You begin in Nell Sombra. You play a deepfolk among a city of outcasts, those who abandoned Nell Asari and the faith of Ysera. Aka has plagued the region for decades, and recently, loved ones, innocent civilians, and honored heroes have been felled, captured, or killed by his hand. With the promise of one of North Balador's most promising heroes, a member of the Rift Breakers, backing the campaign, you feel honor-bound to rise up in arms, ready to put an end to Aka's reign once and for all.
Character Creation Rules: - Start out at level 9 - Starting gear: one rare item, two uncommon items, 500 gp - Two Greater healing potions or one Superior Healing Potion - Non-evil alignment - Deepfolk race required (deep human, duergar, svirfneblin, deep giant, deep elf), Goliath, or Ankhi aarakocra (the stats of these races will be provided upon acceptance) - 10 hero dice total for the whole campaign + 2 epic hero dice (feature explained more in Game Rules)
Features: - 2014 ruleset, with 2024 character features - Fast leveling implemented: every story beat, you will level up, reaching level 12 by the end - Homebrew feat system
About the DM I’m Dom. I’ve DMed since 2018 and have retained my core players since 2021. I’ve run Divus Vult continuously since 2023. My tables use custom maps, music and SFX, custom art, lore handouts, and encounters with clear objectives. Player choices matter, consequences stick, and backstories are woven into the plot.
What You Can Expect Out of DM ATTITUDE. I will arrive ready to run with a steady focus and a clear head. If something affects my readiness, I will address it before the session so it does not bleed into play. PREPARATION. I will come prepared with maps, music, sound effects, art, and lore that support the scene. I will understand the 5E mechanics in use and the homebrew systems in play. I will have clear encounter objectives and multiple paths for player solutions. I will enable Charactermancer access to the published books for smooth character management. I, or one of the veteran players, will maintain quest logs, session recaps, party loot, and location or NPC references so the table can track information without friction. TIMELINESS. I always show up on time and ready to go each week without absence. Should there be any emergencies or plans that overlap gameplay, I will inform the party in a timely manner. NO DM VS PC. I do not run adversarial tables. I will challenge you and I will enforce consequences, including the risk of death, but the goal is a strong story. I will encourage creative attempts and set clear DCs. If something is plainly reasonable, I will allow it to happen without delay. ALLOWABLE GAMEPLAY. The balance of saying "Yes and." I will respect player agency. I will give you room to attempt your ideas and I will balance rulings for difficulty, clarity, and speed. If an idea needs setup, I will show the steps that move you toward it. PATIENCE. I will let the story breathe when the table wants investigation, planning, or social play. I will push the pace when tension calls for speed. I will state time pressure when it exists so you can plan around it. CRITICISM-TOLERANT. I will read post-session feedback and look for concrete improvements. I will adjust tools and pacing where it helps the table. I will keep requests to the point so they are easy to act on. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. I utilize a system called the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. tips. I will reward preparation, smart play, and teamwork through the RESPECT tips. I will make those rewards legible so you can see why you earned them and repeat the behaviors that led to success. MATURITY. We are all adults here and understand gore can be described, curse words can be spoken, and raunchy topics might be covered. This party is open to most concepts, and we aren't easily offended. Please be prepared to speak up if something isn't to your liking.
What I'm Looking For in a Player TIMELINESS. Show up on time and notify the group as soon as possible if you will miss. Two days’ notice is preferred when it is not an emergency. PILLAR ENGAGEMENT. Stay present and act with intent during roleplay, exploration, and combat. Ask direct questions and move the scene forward. TEAMWORK. Coordinate resources and tactics. Lean into party strengths and support weaknesses. Follow the RESPECT tips to improve outcomes. ATTITUDE. Keep rules discussions short and civil. If a call is unclear, the DM will rule at the table. We can revisit between sessions if needed. Rule 0 applies. TECHNICAL PREP. Test your microphone and VTT before we start. We use Discord for voice and between-session RP and Roll20 for the VTT. FEEDBACK. Answer the post-session questionnaire when you can. Short and direct answers help improve pacing and clarity. POST-SESSION ENGAGEMENT. If you opt into text RP, respond within 48 hours and aim to wrap the thread before the next session. Keep side scenes focused so they inform the table without consuming session time.
Player Selection: Apply through the Jotform: Link Here. After that, post in Applications Submitted Thread that you have submitted an application. We will review your application and then I will get in touch with you to discuss any amplifying information. If you have any questions, please post them in the Questions Thread below.
