Hi all! My wife and I are obsessed with DnD and we're looking to start up a second campaign in our homebrew setting (link to map below).
The first proper session of the game will be on July 12, and then every* Sunday thereafter. The game will begin at 2 PM MDT (GMT-6) and run for approximately 3-4 hours per session. We aim to make the campaign last 6 months and then see how people feel about continuing after that. Prior to the July 12th game date, we will arrange to have a group Session 0.
*Some cancellations may occur, of course. In our other campaign, we played 40 out of 52 weeks in a year.
We are posting so far in advance because we have been through this process before, and found the time useful for gathering players, taking care with character creation, working 1-on-1 with each player to involve their character in the world at large, and get the campaign to a level of quality we are satisfied with before beginning.
A little bit about us
We have both been playing Dungeons and Dragons for 5 years and currently have one other campaign ongoing. We DM exclusively online, so we are familiar with the pit-falls one might run into when running an online campaign. Our other ongoing campaign was started as a r/lfg post and is over a year in progress, and still running! Besides that, we've both been avid roleplayers for essentially our entire lives, going all the way back to post-by-post roleplay on forums 20 years ago. We're both very creative souls and love DnD as an outlet for that!
What you can expect from a game DMed by us
A homebrew world that is 2+ years in the making. We both love world-building and have been working together on the setting for this game. We both like to run about a 70-30 split between deep roleplay and combat play, respectively. We work hard (even though we're not great at it) to give each NPC a unique voice and act them out with passion fitting their personalities. We like to try to drive things home that help with immersion, such as appropriate background music, flavour descriptions, and prompting questions that make you *think* like your character. We *do* use some homebrew rules, but these will be addressed in a Session 0 as a group, and will be decided upon as a group. We will not force any homebrew rules on the group that are not agreed upon. We also use homebrew monsters and magic items.
The Homebrew Setting You'll Be Playing In, and Restrictions
This setting incorporates themes of many real cultures around the world both ancient and modern, however is still largely inspired by high fantasy classics, such as Lord of the Rings. Some things are borrowed wholesale from the Forgotten Realms (Faerun) setting of Dungeons and Dragons, but you should find it largely unrecognizable from it. The exact starting location for this campaign within the world has not yet been decided, and will depend partly on the answers players give to our application form (found below). Giants and dragons are both central themes in this world. The world has its own calendar (in which a year is 400 days) and pantheon (which is mostly flexible to meet your character's religious needs).
Some playable races are banned: You will not be able to play in this campaign as a Aarakocra, Centaur, Changeling, Gith, Kalashtar, Leonin, Loxodon, Minotaur, Satyr, Shifter, Simic, Vedalken, Warforged, Yuan-ti Pureblood. Sorry! Some playable races, notably monstrous ones such as Goblin or Orc, etc, are playable if you have a convincing enough story as to why that character is traveling and generally good-natured.
No evil alignment characters. Though your characters do not have to be an upstanding example of good morality, we do generally run games in which the players are the heroes. Generally, your characters should want to be heroes. That is to say, don't be a murderhobo.
The campaign will have a plot, but you will have agency. We try hard not to railroad our players, but we do provide fairly large "the plot is over here" sign. That said, we believe strongly in agency, and your decisions will have consequences that may ripple throughout the world. You can decide to ignore the plot, but the plot won't ignore you.
The campaign may have adult themes, but will be tasteful. We ask our players to be mature and understand that our campaigns may touch on mature subject matter, but we make strides to always do so in a respectful and understanding way. Our application has a spot for you to indicate if any subject matter would trigger you, and we will always take this into consideration.
What you need to be able to play
An internet connection capable of handling voice & video chat, and multiple browser tabs open at a time. We recommend a minimum of 30 down and 10 up. If you do not know your speed, you can test it here.
A decent microphone. Something better than earbud microphone, for example.
A decent webcam. At least 720p resolution preferred. Webcam is required! This will NOT be a voice only campaign.
A Discord account.
A DnDBeyond account (just a free one).
Capability to have at least two screens of content. This could be one monitor, and a smartphone, or tablet, for example. Explained below.
Be able to speak Common English fluently.
Be 18+ years old and available for our listed timeslot.
Because we will be using DNDBeyond, you do not need to own a single book! The game will be played using Foundry VTT, with Discord being used for voice/cam, and DNDBeyond used for character sheets. As such, an adequate setup will be required to be able to participate. At the very minimum, we recommend having a computer/laptop with robust enough specs to be able to run a virtual tabletop in a browser and discord simultaneously, with a secondary device (such as phone or tablet) to have DNDBeyond open. I want to be clear that cameras are mandatory - we are firm that if we're going to be spending 6 months with you, we want to see your faces. You also need to be able to speak English at least fairly fluently. Players of all experience levels are welcome, but players at least familiar with the rules are preferred. Players of all genders, ethnicities, and otherwise are welcome! We expect our players to be mature and respectful of each other.
Please take the time to fill out this application if we've gained your interest! We will be accepting applications for 24-48 hours, depending on the level of interest we receive. After applications are closed, this post will be updated indicating as such. We will then select our top picks and contact them on Discord. If you do not hear from us in 3-5 days, it is safe to assume you did not get selected, and we are very sorry. We anticipate dozens of applications and can only select so many.
I am so sad I can't apply for this right now. Unfortunately I have a group going on Sunday evenings (UK time); its supposed to be bi-weekly but often ends up 3 weeks or so apart, though sometimes more frequent, sometimes less. I just wanted to say what an absolutely awesome post this is and hopefully I would be able to join you guys for a game in the future along with my brother and friend. You sound perfect for our style of play (we've very focused on story, character development and roleplay, who insist on playing with Webcams and prefer to roll our own dice) and your post was extremely well thought out, well written and very appealing. I'm wishing you guys the best of luck and hopefully we can cross paths in the future!
No, it cant be! The applications have closed, and this is is by far the single most impressive posts on DND Beyond I've ever seen. Im truly filled with regret I hadnt check DnD Beyond in time, a game like this with DMs such as yourselves at the helm comes around oh so rarely. Congrats to thise that made it in time. Best of luck to you in your game.
