Above you the crowd swells. In the tunnels approaching the arena their cheers come as a perceptible vibration under your feet and a distant echoing roar. As you step out of the tunnel the thunder of the crowd is almost deafening.
Yet, over the crowd a man's magically enhanced voice can be heard. He introduces you... and your opponent. The excitement of the crowd permeates your being. You are ready, or are you.
--------------------
I feel, as a member of this community, I should contribute by DMing something. I'm not a great DM though in my experience so here's something up my alley.
--------------------
In the prep room you know what's coming. You've seen your opponent, you may have seen them fight. The doors will open and the fight will begin. Some charge, some hide, some use tricks and skills, others spells. The time has come to prove yourself.
All participants will be revived at the end of the battle. The cost of such magic can be costly, but the arena is lucrative. Yet everyone is discouraged from killing unconscious opponents.
Ultimately champions will be granted prizes and will also find wealth and power through the adoration of fans. Some crave it. Others wish only to grow in strength. You have your own reasons for coming here.
--------------------
Create a level one character with the standard array or 27-point buy stats. Please avoid Unearthed Arcana. In the interest of balance many such features will not be allowed.
You will be competing against other players. Some fights will be team fights, others, one-on-one. I'll change the arena around and adjust the battles based on player feed back, balance, and interest. If you go in one-on-one in one match you may be paired with your former enemy in another.
If you are stealthing or acting in a manner you do not wish your opponent to be aware of PM me or place your actions in a spoiler. If you act so your opponent will be aware of your action, or must save post it publicly. We'll see how this works out and tweak it as we go.
If you wish to use a skill to effect an opponent (i.e. Intimidation) it will be permitted, however, the effect will not be as great as with a spell of 1st level or higher, and will have inconsistent effects on success. The character targetted by a skill as an action (or part of an action) will contest with one of two skills as with grappling/shoving (Athletics, Acrobatics) so if you attempt to intimidate it will be contested by the others Intimidation or Insight and it may grant advantage on your next attack or may give your opponent disadvantage.
If a character is unaware of your action it will need to beat their passive. For instance Stealth will go against the opponent's passive Perception or Investigation, unless you were fighting and moved out of sight to hide. Then it would be contested
--------------------
I will be keeping the thread Public and anticipate eventually running more than one arena at a time on the same thread (we'll see how that goes.)
If a player is inactive during a battle for an extended time the match will be forfeit allowing the other to address new challengers. Please avoid letting this happen.
Allies may act out of turn with each other (for the sake of action and interest.) Do not feel the need to wait for your ally to act before you post, feel free to set them up instead. Conversely it may be foolish post out of turn with enemies (if you must, do.) If you use a ranged attack out of turn your opponent may take cover to avoid it.
We'll need more contestants in the Coliseum of Conquest:
