Not sure that the Roll itself is what got my pulse racing but one time I didn't wanna roll after doing a trickshot shooting ground up glass I'd thrown above a battlefield. I rolled like a 17 or something on a pretty wild trick and I was just so nervous on how the DM would decide what happened. Luckily the roll wasn't enough and i blinded the whole party killing two of us for good. Was absolutely phenomenal. #DDBStyle
During a oneshot I was playing, my firbolg barbarian - namely Gulch MacGraff - was attempting to decieve (with a -1 charisma) his way past a guard station in hell. After he failed, he made a reckless attack against the guard standing next to him. I rolled 2 nat 20s on the same roll, nearly killing the guard. When the 2.5 hour session was over, I thought back on this, as well as the 3 other nat 20s rolled during the course of the evening. Thus was the legacy of Gulch MacGraff. #DDBStyle
Final battle, cleric almost without slots, most of the party doing Death Saving throws. Paladin with only one spell slot left and Strahd heavily hurt but standing. Paladin attacks and roll Nat 20!! #DDBStyle
We were fighting a vicious Owlbear in the dark depths of a cavern. It had gotten an unfortunate jump on us after my rogue blew his stealth check. The people in our party were me (a Tiefling rogue named Luceus), a human fighter (named Morn), a half-orc barbarian (named Penelope), and an NPC human cleric controlled by our DM (named Enoch). If I'm not mistaken, we were all 5th level at the time. Normally, Luceus prefers to be sneaky. He doesn't like to get right into the fray of battle since rogues usually have very few hit points and not a great armor class. During this battle, I was lurking in one corner of the cavern, plotting how I was going to carry out a sneak attack (or something else deadly enough that wouldn't also put me in a vulnerable position). The Owlbear was not paying any attention to me. Rather, it was horribly ravaging my three cohorts. It was tearing into Morn and pushing back Penelope and Enoch. I could see that there was no time to plot about my attack, or we might all die. I had to act now. I pulled a +1 dagger out from my pocket and lept at the Owlbear. If I rolled badly, things would not go well. I could fall prone, the Owlbear could get the jump on me or a million other things. I held my breath, cupped the D20 in my hands, said a silent prayer, and kissed my hands. I rolled it down the dice tower and got a critical hit. Seriously. Luceus not only got his surprise attack; he landed perfectly on the Owlbear's back and plunged the +1 dagger into its skin. I doubled my regular damage (before the damage bonus) and the sneak attack damage, per the rules. I brutally killed the Owlbear, who had had a pretty good chunk of his hit points left. It crashed to the ground with a satisfying thud. And I had done it with only a +1 dagger. Everyone at the table applauded me (or my luck, really). My rogue may not always be the hero, but that day he certainly was.
The party were entering the den of the hill giants under the guise of salesmen who could turn the hill giant chief into a god. I, as the DM, rolled THREE NAT 1s IN A ROW for insight checks from the giants. Still my proudest moment #DDBStyle
A hot, sulfurous wind sweeps across the desolate and barren landscape. Around the party, an apocalyptic battle rages; devils fight with practiced order and efficiency, desperately trying to force back the demons pouring from the River Styx. Above it all hangs the prize that you and the fiends around you fight for: the city of Elturel.
Your party knows that this is likely the end for them. Success here means saving whatever lives remain in the city, and failure would condemn them all to the hells; or worse. All of you watch in awe and horror as the Archduke of Avernus, Zariel, once your greatest friend and ally, easily dispatches a Balor demon as her minions observe. She always had been mighty!
Scraga, the lizardman cleric of Savras, beckons the party to stay behind, insisting that he bring Zariel's sword before her and entreat with her. You awe at the change that had been brought about; even though he's definitely one of your new best friends, you always thought he was a bit gruff and had a hard time leaving his savagery behind. Now he was literally transformed. Angelic wings had sprouted from his back and simply being near him was awe-inspiring. Everyone had gone through changes down here, but even though they were all your best friends you couldn't help but worry that Scraga was the only one to change for the better.
The party, with obvious hesitation, agrees to allow Scraga to go forward and you begrudgingly let your friend head into the encircled Zariel. You are too far away to hear their conversation but you ready your blast of sparkles, just in case. Around you, you see your other companions: Metra, the wizard, already channeling arcane energies around her tiny form as the tome from Mahadi had taught her; Anokse's crystal orb shines with eldritch light as it always did before she unleash devastating blasts of infernal energies; and the powered armor found in the laboratory of Kwalish whirred with its techno-magickal might as Grimnir the warforged summoned forth its shields.
You watch Zariel approach the angelic Scraga, death in her eyes. You watch as the sword rises from his grasp to float in the air before her. Zariel is clearly taken aback by its presence and falters in her step, just for a moment. You can't tell what Scraga is saying but, though she does not shout, Zariels next words are clear. She reaches for the weapons and, as she grasps it, says:
“I, Zariel, supplicate myself before the holy light of justice. If it should accept me, I vow to take up this blade once more in its service.”
Everything disappears in a blinding flash of light.
---
Our party's cleric who'd historically had a -2 on CHA had claimed the Sword of Zariel, only by luckily stating heroic and brave intent as he approached it; thus the celestial transformation.
There had originally been much more planned around the Avernus events since it seemed unlikely they would redeem or defeat Zariel. Scraga had a +5 to persuasion and so needed to roll a 20 to succeed on the check.
Zariel would've sent them to destroy Bel or drive Arkhan off of Avernus in exchange for their lives, had they failed. That way she could consolidate her rule of the plane.
Scraga walks up, his player makes a compelling speech, roll his die and it lands on a 20!
Zariel is redeemed, Elturel is saved!
Metra of course, already beholden to Asmodeus through dealing with Mahadi, sees an opportunity in the power vacuum.
I was playing a fighter at the time, her name was Pen. There was high tensions in the group as Pen did not get along well with Raven, in fact she tried to exclude him from the investigation they were going on despite the fact that he would have been very helpful. He snuck behind us anyway and rolled high on stealth so no one saw him there. We were down in the sewers under the city, we had just found a crocodile and my teammate Ikki made the lovely decision to try to scare the creature by casting firebolt. That angered the crocodile. We had just been in a fight, all of us were low HP. But I had the most left so I took up the back as we ran the hell away.
Then, terror strikes. My DM asks me to make a dexterity saving throw. NAT1. The crocodile grabs Pen by her leg and starts dragging her back into his den. She struggles but she is now on 3 HP from the force of his bite. I try to make saving throws to escape, the other characters are running after her. The dice starts hating me. NAT2, NAT3, NAT1. I was certain I would be making a new character before the end of the session, but then, here comes Raven. Who wasn't supposed to be there. Gets on top of the beast and pries its jaws open so Pen could escape. Ikki and a few other party members help her get away as Raven deals with the crocodile. I lived.
For anyone wondering, Pen now hates crocodiles. #DDBStyle
#DDBStyle Probably the most intense roll I've ever made was playing RoTFM. (Spoilers ahead!) My character was a Peace Domain Cleric of Ilmater who had taken a Plea of Rest, putting his religious duties aside to deal with the duergar. To roleplay my character I didn't want him to have a lot of necromancy spells or attempt to deal any killing blows to enemies, unless they were deserving of Ilmater's fury, so I didn't take any necromancy spells unless they were for healing as Ilmater was known to be against necromancy that wasn't beneficial. With the Plea of Rest I wanted this to be a bit of character development for my cleric and I had taken Inflict Wounds to deal a bunch of damage. The Chardalyn dragon was destroying Ten Towns while the party was trying to catch up to it in time. At one point we lost the raging barbarian who decided to climb up onto it and try to deal consistent blows to it while it was flying but fell into the icy lake. Our sorcerer/wizard fell to its Radiant Breath attack and our warlock was trying to do some close magic damage to it before almost going down. So at this point it was only me and the warlock left, one hit to either of us and we were down. We all thought this was going to be a TPK. I managed to have enough movement to flank the dragon and cast Inflict Wounds at 3rd level, without the advantage I was going to miss but the advantage gave me the roll I needed to kill it. We were playing this online but you could just feel the relief and excitement of everyone that we actually did it.
A roper dragged my entire party into a pit then dislodged sending everyone into free fall. The only one not yet falling was my sorcerer hanging from the wall by a dagger. I had to roll a strength check to support the weight of everyone for one round and rolled a Nat20
I think there was only one moment when a roll was really impactful, and that was during the final session of a 3 year campaign. I rolled a 1 to finish off the BBEG at a pivotal moment in the fight, causing an adj PC to go down, and it all went downhill from there. I think only 2 PCs of 6 survived to see the end, and what would have been a giant celebration ended with the 2 PCs remarking how pointless the victory was without anyone left to enjoy it. It was an extremely bittersweet ending, and the pizza and wings helped us cope. lol #DDBStyle
My drow fighter had a soul stealing sword, based loosely on the Nine Lives Stealer. I had just gotten the sword, hadn't really had a chance to check out its soul stealing function other than I knew I had to crit with it and the monster had to be low enough on the HP. My DM had decided to have us play some mini games, one of which was a fun Hydra game. Defeat/Kill the Hydra heads, the person who lasts the longest wins. Unfortunate for the NPC game runner, he let us keep our weapons. Second round, I Crit. And you guessed it, those Hyrdra heads have under 100hp. One failed con save later and that hydra's soul was mine!! Ruined that poor NPC's life but he certainly learned a lesson that day. #DDBStyle
Jumped back in D&D straight into Curse of Strahd using a Tiefling Draconic Bloodline sorcerer who is also a werewolf with a few dark gifts from the amber temple. I don't know whats happening but its awesome lol.
A recent intense fight pinned our party against a wave of vampire spawn with a few beefier ones in the mix. Our party technically has no primary tank so a line of our melee capable was made to meet them first. Those party members were getting hit hard while I was in the back with one other lobbing magic. After some turns, we started to thin them down a little but then the beefier spawn kicked in. At this point the front line party members were close to flat-lining while the vampires were barely damaged. It was looking very dire and I was running low on magic slots so I allocated all my sorcerer points back to magic slots. Then as a last ditch I cast Ring of Fire around the vampires and started cooking them inside. As they all eventually ran out of the fire, I switched to casting Scorching Ray with a few lucky Nat 20's which disintegrated most of them. During this mayhem my party was able to do some small heals and then finish off the rest of the vampires. So far this was one of the most intense engagements we had but it was a blast! https://twitter.com/DnDBeyond/status/1407762535520956418?ref_src=twsrc^tfw|twcamp^tweetembed|twterm^1407762535520956418|twgr^|twcon^s1_c10&ref_url=https://publish.twitter.com/?query=https3A2F2Ftwitter.com2FDnDBeyond2Fstatus2F1407762535520956418widget=Tweet
Here's an example of a bad roll turning out for the best:
We were green (lvl 3 I think) and were confronting the evil cult leader. We'd dealt with the minions and had him isolated on top of a pillar. He was raining down spell after spell and doing a good job dodging everything the party threw at him. My rogue saw the opportunity to try and sneak around behind, then stealthily climb up the chain for his elevator platform and shank him from behind. It's at this point that the cult leader turns invisible and makes his escape. Unfortunately, I roll terribly (a 2 I believe) and don't react in time when the chain starts moving. The cult leader ends up coming down right on top of me, causing us both to fall about 20 feet and me getting crushed.
If I had rolled better I would have been able to dodge and he might have gotten past me and fled into the night. Instead, he was literally right on top of me, so when he tried to bolt I got an attack of opportunity. I rolled high and absolutely skewered him. An undignified victory, but SO satisfying!
It was in 3.5, we were in the final session. Facing the BBEG, it was an evil God homebrew creation of our DM. We had used up all of our healing potions, most of spell slots, and the fighter and rogue were both down. I was playing a dwarven beast master two of my animal companions were down. My first companion a moose(a re-skined camel) and I did a tag team attack. The dice gods were with us we both crited and did the final blow to the BBEG. The best moment in my D and D career. #ddbstyle

We've been playing Tyranny of Dragons, and twice now have I made friends with the cultists, convincing them that somehow I am one of them. As a copper Dragonborn Barbarian, follower of Bahamut. A part of me did feel a little bad about having a drink with Bog Luck and working with him, just to turn on him, but at least he didn't survive the first round. It's just so much fun sometimes to be able to stumble into a situation while the rest of the party is being captured or just doesn't know what you're doing to begin with. #DDBStyle
