I think my favorite natural 20 story was back when me and my friend group were a lot more loosey goosey with the rules. I was playing as a fighter/paladin alongside an orc rogue, a rapier fighter, and a cleric priestess of the sun. We were fighting a bebelith and using the older rules where it could instantly pull off armor with a single attack. It attacked me first but neither claw managed to hit my armor class. I asked the DM if I could called-shot it in the face and the DM said his head was too high, between 10-15ft as it was fighting. I asked if I could try jumping to attack and DM allowed it, so I make an athletics check (my best skill) and roll a natural 20, follow it up with a called-shot to the face of the beblith, another natural 20 permanently disabling its bite attack. At this point the rogue had stabbed it in the back with both of his daggers, and the bebelith turned around to try and attack the rogue. On my next turn I asked if I could try to climb the bebelith's back, the DM warned me this would be a very high DC but to the awe of us all I rolled another natural 20 atheletics check, climbed up its back, impaled my flaming sword into its back and held on twisting the sword until it died the next round. #DDBStyle
Dm did a xmas special and my character as a psionic found a few irregularities with the story setup, rolled to figure out if there was an illusion around. Rolled a 20 on the dice, turns out it was a collective dream induced by a demigod so woke my team and i broke xmas. #DDBSTYLE
A reckless barbarian in our group went to survey the side of some icy rubble in the Icespire hold of the Dragon of Icespire peak module. He had a +7 to athletics so I thought it would be a walk in the park but he rolled a natural 1 and nearly slipped off the side of the cliff. Had the paladin not been there to save him, he would have perished right before the final battle with Cryovain.
I am currently DMing a game in which circumstances led my players to a coastal town that had been attacked by members of an oceangoing cult. They battled their way through countless enemies and arrived at the feet of one of the cults high priests who was busying herself by going full Darth Vader on the sultan-general of the city. Unbeknownst to her, Charlie, the parties rogue, rolled a nat 20 on stealth and used some smoke as cover to get the jump on the high priest. Another set of high rolls secured some solid early strikes, angering the high priest and forcing her to invoke the will of her 'patron', providing her a significant boost to AC and damage! Things started to heat up as Percy, the party of twos Cleric, appeared at the door and took up position on an unmanned harpoon canon. It was already loaded so the plucky priest took aim and fired, only to miss as the high priests newly boosted reflexes allowed her to jolt to the side. In response to this, the high priest attacked the mounted weapon, hitting it with a nat 20, instantly obliterating it. Percy was knocked away as the high priest's second attack rolled in... nat 1. Her arm became wedged in the shrapnel, stopping her from moving and granting advantage to players on attack. Charlie made his move, knowing full well that his quarry was a sitting duck... the rogues shorts sword arced across, its trajectory looking good... nat 1... not to worry, advantage and all... nat 1... As the DM I couldn't help but laugh as Charlie's sword became lodged in the same harpoon launcher, setting him a mere 5ft away from an enraged, muscle bound monster of a woman who was now seeing red even more than before! (Kind of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone vibes with the troll in the bathroom trying to give Ron a battering!) We were also using the new stress rules from Van Richten's, so Charlie was in too much panic to think to drop his sword and rather continued to attempt to pull it out of the rubble, all while dodging attacks from the fist equivalent of a vorpal sword! Percy continued to lay into the high priest with his holy magics, and Charlie eventually came to his senses, releasing the blade and using his daggers to finish off the flailing high priest who had failed time and time again to dislodge herself from the shattered contraption of her own making. So in short, a couple of crazy contrasting rolls turned a high octane duel between warriors into an anger induced amalgamation of panic, prayers and punching!
Currently playing through the Out of the Abyss campaign and the tensest dice moment was definitely when my Warlock cast Banishment on the demon lord Jubilex and managed to pull it off when Jubilex rolled 1 less than my spell save DC. #DDBStyle

The Narzugon floats in front of you on its Nightmare steed, infernal fiery weapon in hand: "How dare you desecrate my hill ?" -We're here for the vampire, sorry bothering you, it won't take long, no worries we won't desecrate anything. Persuasion check: Critical fail 🥵#DDBStyle
I play a druid with a protective instinct towards children. Our paladin, who is a changeling who chooses to present as a seven year old girl, successfully made friends with a nightmare. I gave him a warning that I was watching him, and not to try anything. He turned to fart in my general direction, but with a nightmare, everything is fire. When the DM asked me to make a dexterity saving throw, I rolled a nat 1 and took 14 points of napalm fart damage (she rolled max damage - go figure.) It's also worth noting that I took more damage from that single failed save than the rest of the party took combined from the encounter we had just gotten through.
#DDBStyle I nearly fell to my death during an attempt at crossing a rickety bridge. Another party cast a spell and helped to prevent my demise. I was one bad roll away from certain doom.
Our party encountered a pair of twins that were experts in magical mind control. They had several NPCs under their control already, and used spells to confuse our party and make us unable to attack at times. My gunslinger finally took down one of the twins, and her sister got MAD - she was ready to unleash high level chain lightning at me! Thankfully, our party's sorcerer subtly counterspelled her, and we were able to eventually take her down. #DDBstyle
So I'm a new DM and am currently running the essentials kit for my significant other as a one on one campaign. I really got into dnd recently and have been excited for the chance to show my SO why I'm getting into this game. So I've added a bunch of random NPC's with quests to go along with the main storyline of the Dragon, and I've also put some backstory in that ties to their character.
Ethiria (the PC), and their sidekick Inverna ran into an older woman of the name April and asked the two to check on her nephew and husband who left Phandalin to go hunting or something but have taken much longer than she's expected. (This story isn't super unique I'm assuming but we are both new so it was really fun for us).
So the two adventurers agree to sideline the quest board and go searching for the missing people. They are given directions on where they said they'd be, and upon reaching the area they essentially find that Peper Parper (the Nephew) had become a were-spider and knocked their uncle unconscious. After a fight that ends with Peper returning to human form and also becoming unconscious, the two carry them back to Phandalin.
They make it back to Phandalin, take the two unconscious people to Aprils' house where they can be cared for but are asked to retrieve a health potion from Umbridge Hill. It's worth noting that anytime you leave or enter a named area on the map, you roll a d20 to determine the location of the dragon.
So, after getting the Potion from the NPC at Umbridge Hill. The two return to Phandalin and as they do I roll the d20 and of course the dragon is now AT PHANDALIN. It really worked out in a nice way because I hadn't known how to kick in the larger plot and also it was just kinda exciting for both of us to run an encounter with a dragon.
So Ethiria makes a really smart but also dramatic play of sending Inverna with the potion to April while Ethiria distracts and fights the dragon. At this point, I was now scared because I really did not want her to die to a dragon on her first game. Luckily she only needed to do 10 damage for the dragon to run. She used minor illusion to confuse the dragon of her location and rolled a nat 20 while attacking it.
So that dragon will now have a huge scar on its leg because of her, and I've also given her sword a bonus to attack because the "dragon's blood imbued the blade with its own magic". Which i thought would be an exciting reward. It was really cool and a great early experience for both a new DM and a new player.
The Cleric was down, the Fighter had run away, and the wounded Rogue - his back to a stalagmite - had used his last Potion of Invisibility to hide from the Young Black Dragon that had devastated his group. With no choice but to go out swinging, he dashed out from behind the rocks, grabbed the Dragonbane Longsword the Fighter had dropped, and swung it at the back of the dragon's head.
Barely beating the Dragon's AC with a natural 17 , the enchanted sword's impact sent the dragon reeling, and it flew away rather than take another hit. The party was saved, the Cleric was revived, and the Fighter gave up his share of the loot. #DDBStyle
I think I have to stick with my "so called" Die Hard escape. While playing a semi homebrew of Princes of the Apocalypse our group ended up in the upper floors of the Feathergale Spire. Realizing we were outnumbered, outgunned, and underprepared we attempted a diplomatic exit... As we exited the main room two of our party were affected by an enchantment that had them turning back. Attempting to be proactive and keep them from doing so I (the humble Bard) ran past them to shut the door. Unfortunately, as I grasped the doors they closed me into the room rather than outside of it with my party. Realizing I was now alone in the room with the overwhelming forces I reached I my pack desperately seeking a way out. Diggi5 around my hand found 3 scrolls I happened to be carrying for the party/myself (I was rarely spell equipped for combat as I neas the only individual who could do much in the way of healing). A scroll of Lightning Bolt and 2 scrolls of Fireball... As I heard the enemies returning to the main chamber I was in from their search of the floor we had (nearly successfully) snuck away from I had to decide if I was only escaping for myself or trying to save my enchanted friends as well, still pounding on the now locked door as they sought to follow through on their command to return. I decided to attempt both. Hurrying to the nearest windows roughly centered in the outside wall of this barely 20-25ft curving rectangle chamber, I fastened my rope around my waist and chest in a harnesses and tied it to a protrusion just outside the window. As I finished the last knot the doors at either end of the chamber burst open from the frustrated groups of Feathergale Knights who had been scouring for us. As a number advanced towards my hiding place near the window and 2 went to open the doors to "welcome" and likely kill my companions I used my surprise round to cast lightning bolt towards the door with their leader and his entourage. Then in quick succession (due to extremely lucky initiative and the chaos I caused) shot the fireballs to either side, throwing my self out the window at the same time. Like John McClain with the hose I swung out and downward from the blast of fire out the windows not sure if anyone survived in the room or if I had even managed to break the concentration of whoever had controlled my companions. Unlike John McClain I did not bounce against a window... I hit a sheer wall above the valley that the spire is perched on the cliff of. A fall guaranteed instant and permanent death. As I dangled no knowing what I could do next, the GM described the spark that landed on my rope and was smouldering alight. Waiting with baited breath and dearly wishing I had thought to prepare feather fall, I heard my companions calling out as one of them was flying toward me on a gryphon. They were flying fast and I could feel the rope giving way but thanks to some good luck (and rolls) on both of our parts they managed to snag me out of the air as the rope snapped. #DDBStyle
during Out of the Abyss, my party and I had just began assisting with the overthrowing of the kua toa who worshiped the lemagoogoon little did we know what it actually was and as we ran i being the guardian of the group looked back and stared the demogorgon straight in the eyes thinking all was over for me i managed to roll a nat 20 to barely pass the the DC23 save and not become one of the many flattened by the demon #DDBSyle
It was about 5 years ago when I was playing with a group I had met when I lived in Long Beach California. We were finishing up a campaign that was ending that day and we had a vicious encounter and I was almost at no hit points and I think I had one chance to get a Nat 20 just to stay alive and this was after a lot of punishment. Like I am not sure if I really wanted to live on with this character. I had lost my arm and half my face and believe it or not I made it with a clean Nat 20 survived and was really happy so I could maybe get myself back together to be killed off the next time we played so my pulse was up and happy to be so mad and dead at my next session. #DBBStyle
It was my 1st session in my 1st online campaign. I'd been rolling nothing above 5 on Perception checks (to spot the guy that's been following us) w/ my physical dice, so I finally decided to roll it on dndbeyond! And it gave me a ... 1. 🤦🏻♀️
But then my DM reminded me that I could roll with advantage! 😮 And the second roll was a 19!!!!!!😱🤣🎊🎉
My most recent heart-racing dice event would be from the last session in the game I DM. My players were up against a group of underworld criminals who they'd been attempting to trick and who had instead ambushed them. One of the criminals was a Sneakhand (martial arts adept) who kept rolling well against the party . . . who kept failing the saves to not be stunned by his attacks. It was a tense night for all of us, and there was much rejoicing when he was defeated and the gumdrop that represented him was eaten!
First D&D character got a pet almiraj, at the next combat against a bugbear the almiraj attacked and rolled a nat 20, killing it. The DM described how this small, white unicorn-rabbit impaled the bugbear and pulled out its heart impaled on its horn, dripping with blood. #DDBStyle
We were playing a 4th ed game. DM put us up against some whopping hard enemies (blanked on the exact enemies at this moment) that has us trapped and were kicking arse. Due to some nice synergies, I managed to throw down a successful spell that generated magical vines/thorns and stopped them being able to move or teleport. It saved our skin. We were able to take them down then escape much to the DMs annoyance. Thankfully I made that roll with a Nat 20 to keep them trapped.
I DM'd a few homebrew sessions for my wife and my best friend who is career military and has been having a ruff go of things with some bad family medical stuff, has had multiple combat deployments, has been getting beaten around by some other things I won't mention, not to mention the poor guy has to deal with me as a friend. The sessions were meant to give my buddy some much needed laughter and good time with friends while also introducing his daughter to D&D for the first time as a female half-elf wizard; granted she ended up as a male halfling when she got on the bad end of the Reckoner in the final fight of the first session but that was only one sideways dice roll lol. To round out the party my wife was a male sphynx style tabaxi monk, my friend was a human barbarian, and in our second session we were joined by another PC with a male aarakocra rogue. Best part of the second session had the party chasing some baddies who stole the item they were entrusted to protect from the first session down a steep snowy mountainside. The dice rolls during that amazing crazy ride down the mountain had our barbarian trying to sled down it on his shield hitting multiple jumps on the way (the dice allowing him to land every one), the monk was doing monk stuff parkouring down, all while the poor wizard was, you guessed it, falling down the mountainside with some truly abysmal dice rolls. Luckily our airborne medevac was there to pick up wizard before she *coughs* sorry, 'he' died a second time. They survived the trip down and eventually managed to get the item back. Hopefully we will get to continue the story someday to see if they ever can change my buddies daughter back into a female half-elf! She hates that her character is a guy right now! Hahahaha#DDBStyle
Having to save my crew among the swashbuckler50 (Pirate Ship) and we were attacked by ghost pirates. My crew and my friends already had low health due to a sea monster awhile back and if it weren't for my Nat 20 roll we would have been finished.
