It really catches my attention that there are a lot of people who have been on the site for many years but have less than ~10 posts. And a lot of those posts are just to say "bye" :(
This is sad for me, especially since this is my first year here with you guys.
Maybe one simple option could be to create a copy of the database and make a legacy app for smartphones, locked to that copy. No modifications, no maintenance—just so people can connect to their current character sheets and the 2014 rules and descriptions.
I doubt they are.
When piecemeal was taken away during the marketplace "upgrade" I asked this very question and the response was "I'm not tracking that granularly, but I do note the amount of individual commenters."
It seems they don't want those metric documented, a problem is easier to ignore when you limit data.
Owning the digital version of the books does not entitle anyone access to the character sheets, or character creation tools. It makes 100% business sense for this to be part of the updates. You can use pen and paper for free, you paid less for digital versions of the book.
Where are you getting this idea from?
Both the old store and new marketplace specifically state that you are buy features and access to the character creator. If you go to any book in the new marketplace the character builder is the first thing listed under "Beyond Unlocks", and on the old store you could even buy the character creator options independently of the digital books.
The character creator has always been something that you are explicitly purchasing access to and features for, and people have a right to be angry when content they have purchased is removed.
Your explanation of why you think it's better is irrelevant. Better or worse is subjective. If someone else thinks it's worse for their needs, then it's worse for their needs.
Changes that I didn't want to make being forced on me in the middle of a campaign is bad. Full stop. Taking away player choice and agency without consent or ability to opt out is bad. It's disrespectful, disruptive, and counterproductive. The SRD was *always* going to be available for the 2024 ruleset, so saying "yay free content" is pointless. The fact that adoption is being forced is not good.
If we were at a restaurant, and I took food away from you (that you wanted to eat) and replaced it with different food that wasn't what you wanted but was newer, you would not call that a "better" experience.
Does anyone know exactly when the forced patchover that will change by players character sheets happens?
I'll be canceling my subscription to DnDBeyond and switching to Pathfinder since WOTC has been on a bad path for a while now. Just want to see if I need to scrap my campaign right in the middle because switching over at such a high level will be incredibly confusing to my players.
and this reaffirms how I was right in my decision to stop supporting DDB and instead move to buying physical / through VTTs.
The only potential problem I can see with that, nobody yet knows how or if this will affect the big VTTs, like Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds, or any others that you can "buy" official D&D content through to use there. For the record, I am not one iota opposed to most of the changes in the new PHB. Sometimes change needs to happen, and we embraced it back in the day with 3.5e though there were similar grumblings about having to buy new copies of the books. DDB is an entirely different animal, and so are VTTs. A lot of people have only invested in DDB and are thus understandably upset, especially after being told they could retain the use of their already purchased 2014 era content. From everything that has officially been said, existing characters and campaigns using the older version of the rules will likely be broken after the site update, and will require a lot of work on the part of the DM to patch things back together. Work they shouldn't be required to do, since these things can be done internally by WotC.
This is just the latest in a string of horrible decisions by Hasbro/WotC aimed at the people that literally write their paychecks and pay their mortgages, and I think it's time to cause them pain where they will feel it most, in their wallets.
**** this company. Wizards of the Coast is never getting another dime out of me.
The MtG team has nothing to do with this fiasco. Neither does the rules, modules, and other DnD teams in general. The only one that shouldn't get money is the DDB team, but you're still fine to play the game through physical.

Small correction, they're 100% right that "Owning the digital version of the books does not entitle anyone access to the character sheets, or character creation tools". The compendium (the actual book) and the character sheet are two different things. They're often bought together in a bundle, yes, but strictly speaking, they are 2 distinct products.
With that said, the rest of that post is bogus, I'll agree.
The more I think about this "clarification" The wilder it gets in my head. Someone approved this post and thought it was a good idea and helpful. And I'm certain it was reviewed by others. Like, it reads antagonistic and condescending and people on the inside were like "yep that's good, let's go with that".
Fuel on the fire is a weird way to approach customer service woes. Yet here we are.

Well yes, I specifically decided to purchase physical only and resort to digital through "other means" since I already own the book. I've grown tired of crap like the CoS or Storwreck Isle changing the lore of the NPCs, so I'll stick to physical where they can't do that.
People are blowing this up and i dont think they realise whats going on.
90% of the spells and magic items HAVENT CHANGED. The 10% that have are BETTER than the old versions. and thats just the the ones IN THE PHB.
EVERY other spell in the other books hasnt changed and you can still use them.
People are still compiling lists of what spells have changed, but at last count at least 110 of 380ish spells have changed, so 29%. You may consider the new spells better, but not everyone has the same opinion. How can you say, for instance, that the 2024 Conjure Animals is better than the 2014 Conjure Animals when they do completely different things and have completely different uses?
Some people like myself don't even have an opinion on which is better because we had no intention of switching in the middle of a campaign, but now have to either read and compare 110 spells to evaluate the changes, along with multiple other changes being forced upon us, or spend time porting all their character sheets over to a new system (or pen and paper). All with less than two weeks notice.
This is game and this community are being ran into the ground by a company with bad leadership. At this point fixing the issue will not be enough. This nonsense will continue into the future unless the people responsible are fired and replaced with competent leaders who understand the game, its history, and its community. OR, if hasbro would just release its grip, and sell the publishing rights to an entity willing to manage the rules set competently and conscientiously.

The Mad King said, "Burn them all!" in his final insane rantings. Of course, "Let them burn themselves to the ground!" would be more fitting in this case.
Just so people are clear, currently if you have purchased content a la carte, it is not accessible through the Compendium ONLY through the character sheet. When it is changed/removed you will no longer have access to it, period. (I just tested to confirm that I couldn't access a la carte purchases through the Compendium.)
They were seperate under the old store, so yes you could buy the compendium without the character builder, but I don't think anyone in that situation would be complaining. The vast majority of people however would be buying both, or just the character creator features.
In the new marketplace however they are one and the same, you buy the compendium and the character creator features as one item. It specifically mentions the character creator in the list of what's included with the purchase.
Following along with this well-deserved roasting of WizBro & would like to encourage everyone who has said they're thinking about canceling their subscription to pull the trigger. You'll retain access to your current sub tier until the date it would have renewed.
Nobody's reading these comments, because they don't actually want this kind of feedback, but I assure you, someone is paying attention to the "subscription cancelled" metrics.

Oh hey look at that- they've stated their intention to make purchased content unavailable.
EU folks should be eyeing that pretty sharply. Your consumer protection laws are I suspect strong enough to do something with that.
You sold the content to us saying we could use it on our character sheets, and now you are taking away the ability for us to use it on our character sheets.
This is unacceptable behavior from a company, I will not be supporting DnD with any more purchases, be they on this site or any other.
Just like with the OGL scandal, the only way people at DnD Beyond/WotC/Hasbro are going notice people's discontent with their changes is to hit them in the pocket book. Cancel your subscriptions people.
