Khessa wonders whether the new wagons may be of the Cult as well... out of curiosity, she does as she had done before: she withdraws (maybe in The Hoper's wagon?), casts Detect Magic as ritual, then moves discreetly to a useful distance...
Do emanations of magic come from the new wagons?
Regardless of that, the blonde arcane warrior instructs Anator to watch over the Cultists at night - possibly flying by and listening, if they start talking to the newcomers.
No magic from the new wagons. The Cultists don't interact with them either.
Following Khessa's example, Eric retires briefly in prey, unseen he cast Detect evil and good as well his usual artisan blessing. "Sometimes" he says "ritual objects that are not magical themself can harbor traces of the magical power that has used during ceremonies, both sacred or fiendish ones, those practices should be common among cultists" he says when wandering around the camp with Khessa, looking for magic vibes.
Apart from the obvious fiendish (from the Cult) and sacred traces of magical power you don't find anything among the newcomers. However. Kriv's decorated maul gives off some traces a sacred power.
Once the caravan has settled down for the night, Eric takes a look to the newcomers, trying to distinguish if they have any leader or prominent figure among them.
Once he's in her sights, Zale discretely keeps an eye on Mr. Shady, and any people he seems to hang around often, throughout the journey.
Perception: 15
Like Eric, she also examines the newcomers, though she does so from a distance. Taking out her rapier, she sits down next to Kriv and starts cleaning the blade. Unlike the other dragonborn, she has cleaned it a few times since Greenest, though she hasn't given it a proper sharpening in a while. After doing so with great care, she begins to polish it and clean anything she missed before. Once finished, she stares at if for a moment with a distant look in her eyes, before sheathing it.

Not really a "rich merchant" among them. Just a bunch of people trying to make a living. Nobody remarkable.

Mr Shady looks... shady... with his smug smile. He retires early for the evening.
Eventually you all get a good night's rest. Zale when you wake up you notice something sticking out of the side of your employer's wagon.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Nixi will instruct Isidore the raven to perch in a tree near Mr. Shady's wagon and to watch him all night, following him and alerting her if he leaves the wagon.
That smug-faced shady guy is making it really hard for the rouge to contain herself. It's all she can do to keep from glaring at him.
The next morning, Zale notices the thing sticking out of the wagon and makes her way over to it. She has a guess as to what it might be, and she doesn't like the idea that someone might become hostile towards her employer because of her.

Raven perception 13
Isidore is pretty sure Mr. Shady didn't leave the wagon, but she had some moments of inattention.

Once Kriv wakes up, he heads away from the caravan a bit, keeping it within sight. He find a place to sit and casts Create or Destroy Water, allowing the water to rain over him. He holds a belaying pin and plays with it, enjoying the rain.
Zale stares at the paper for a moment, face reddening with anger, before yanking the blade out of the wall, grabbing the note and stalking over to her companions. Thrusting it towards them so they can see it, she forgets that they probably can't read it. "Curiosity? CURIOSITY? This must be some sort o game. I hate being played with! The only thing I did was ask 'em what they wanted because the were castin their bloody magics on me then lookin at me weird. How the heck is that me bein curious? I was bein Cautious! This here should be sayin' Curiosity killed the bloody mage who can't be bothered to ask what magic items a passerby might have and instead rudely casts magic on them without asking!!! All I wanted was to get a far price for this bloody dagger, then it goes missin, then I find it along with a bloody DEATH THREAT!" She pauses, breathing heavily after her outburst, and gripping the hilt of her dagger. "They have no right to threaten me for just doin me job." She growls quivering with rage. "If I had proof for who did this I'd be goin right over there and teachin him a lesson."

"I spoke with Nixi..." recalls Khessa "She had Isidore keep an eye on Mr Shady and he should not have left the wagon. Unless this happened in one of her few moments of inattention, but... well... it would have been unlikely. Maybe Mr Shady is their magic-user and there is some other Mr Sneaky that did this".
"A lesson they deserve, that's for sure!" agrees the blonde arcane warrior "But probably the hardest (and most rewarding for us) lesson we can teach them by discovering their plans and ruining them. We could probably set up an ambush first and kill Mr Shady; but the net effect would be to make all the cultists more careful - and thus make our mission more difficult. You know, Zale, I don't know much about cooking (except cabbage cooking), but I've heard" she winks "that revenge is a dish best eaten cold".
The rest of the day you don't seem to notice Mr. Shady. And not the day after and not the day after that either. Until...
Day 17
The Trade Way skirts around and between the huge Trollbark and Misty Forests, but it passes through many other, smaller forests that don’t appear on maps. When the caravan is passing through one such wooded region you suddenly here some noise from the front of the Caravan. Followed by cries for help.
Khessa quickly sends Anator flying, out of range of any enemies on the ground, to check what's going on. She concentrates to use her brother's senses directly; what's going on there?

"You spoken wise! I could not find better words" nods Eric
Zale crumples the parchment in her hand then throws it into the cook fire. She still looks angry, but she's calmed down a lot."Right you be Khessa, Right you be."She looks down at the dagger in her hand. "I don't know if there was some other motive behind this, or if he's really just trying to send a message...but, do ye think ye could check this thing and make sure he didn't go castin any other spell on it?"
Zale had been on high alert since the dagger indecent. The fact that Mr. Shady seems to have disappeared makes her even more on edge. Hearing the screams, she grits her teeth and rushes towards them as fast as she can.

"Good point!" agrees Khessa. She casts Detect Magic as ritual and checks if the magical aura emanating from the object is the same as before or has changed (the school of magic of the aura, I mean - that's what the spell lets you detect).
