It's ya boy, Ru. I am not a boy. I am actually an early 30's enby librarian. I have a few duets running, but I think I can handle one or two more. Instead of overdoing it on Lost Mines, I've decided to open up a search for duets for Curse of Strahd! My favorite story!
If you would like to know more about me, I go by Ru and I am in EST (which is GMT -4, I think). I am not super active, but my goal is to update once a day if not more. I love anime, video games, books, and writing. I mostly love heroic fantasies, horror, romances, and mixtures therein -- hence my love for Curse of Strahd. I am currently super into Baldur's Gate 3, so I am in the mood for vampires.
What I am looking for
I am looking for players who are okay with there being no other PCs. This is strictly one on one. I think it makes the game move more quickly and gives you even more agency since you don't need to wait for group approval or harmony. Duets are more about story telling, so I will actively try to plot with you on how things roll out, but it will still leave room for surprise. You don't need to be super duper active, since I won't be. I am just looking for someone who will help move the story along and take direct action and not necessarily wait around for the DM to make things happen -- unless you are staking things out. (lol)
I am looking for adults only (sorry teens) as well. This is just so when we OOC, I can talk about old people thing like having kids, the cost of all these damn books, and yelling at rain clouds. I do have a few fandoms I'm involved in and I enjoy playing videogames, so if you are geeky in that respect, we will get along just fine. I like to OOC a bit, so we can make sure we get along and stuff too. Getting along is important.
If you are willing to DM a duet game for me that is Baldur's Gate: Avernus OR Curse of Strahd (lol), then it will tempt me to pick you, not going to lie.
Otherwise, please be chill, respectful of queer people, and understand life happens.
About the game
This is Curse of Strahd: Modified by Ru. I am open to accepting anyone, regardless of if you have played through this adventure or not. I homebrew things about CoS, including adding areas, enemies, NPCs, removing elements I find yucky. Etc. This is a scary game -- for your character. I encourage you to create a character that can be scared, motivated by fear, and for you as the player to lean in on the horror elements. I am not trying to scare you, the player, though that might happen on accident. Please read this excerpt from Van Richten's Guide on making a character ready to be scared:
When planning to play a scary adventure, create a character prepared to be scared. Consider how your character reacts to being frightened and how that affects the creepy atmosphere of the adventure. Don’t consider fear a tactical disadvantage or something to be avoided. As part of playing a frightening game, you’re a participant in building and reinforcing a sense of dread for everyone at the table. If your character laughs in the face of every danger, they undermine the adventure’s threats and its broader atmosphere.
When creating and playing your character, consider courage not as the absence of fear but as the process of overcoming it. How might your character react in surprise before they rally to overcome the terror they face? Do they scream, flee, or freeze? Or might they throw themself into battle, perhaps recklessly or for too long? Record a default reaction on your character sheet so you can respond consistently when shocking events occur.
Habits:
Playing horror adventures is similar to telling ghost stories around a fire. You and the game’s other players are allies in creating a fun, safe, moody atmosphere for your game. Contribute to this by keeping the following elements in mind:
Limit Comedy. Be aware that comedy breaks tension. Nothing dispels an ominous atmosphere like jokes, be they in character or otherwise. Player Fears Versus Character Fears. Understand the difference between scaring characters and scaring players. If you know a player has a fear of spiders, never employ that knowledge when contributing to a creepy scene. Consent Is a Priority. If a plot leads you to consider a path involving another player’s character, always ask that player’s permission before acting. Their enjoyment is more important than shock value. Know What’s Too Far. If a game gets too intense or goes a direction you don’t want to explore, make sure you and the other players have a method for raising concerns mid-game and support one another in doing so. Add to Your Own Terror. Feel free to make horrific circumstance worse for your character. If your character has a fear of goats and the DM describes some eldritch horror, don’t hesitate to ask if the creature has hooves or hourglass eyes. Enjoy the Struggle. Not everyone can expect to escape a horror story unscathed. While your character should do everything they can to survive and triumph over challenges, any scars they gain along the way are part of what makes the horror meaningful and memorable.
Few players? But how will combat be fair? This game will have recruitable NPCs that will act as your sidekicks and will be roleplayed by me, but controlled by you in combat. They will be NPCs you normally encounter in the adventure as well as a few I sprinkle in myself. Sidekicks can range from enemies you befriended, beasts you tamed, or that random NPC I made up that you won't shut up about. You simply need to ask them to join your party and they probably will if they like you enough. When possible, you can choose what sidekick statblock will be associated with your Sidekick NPCs, but some of them will be assigned by me because the NPC is clearly a spellcaster, roguish character, or similar circumstances.
WARNING: DMPC! Curse of Strahd features a lot of NPCs who will be recruitable, but there is an NPC that seems to always border on being a DMPC. I am being upfront that this NPC is more or less non-negotiable and will be part of your NPC party. They will not count against you in terms of the NPCs you can add or dismiss from your party.
What about character creation? We are starting at level 1, using point buy, and 1 free feat at level 1. Each ASI you can have a feat and a stat improvement. Races I'm accepting are from player's handbook + changelings + races from Van Richten's, no others. Variant human allowed, but custom origin is not. If you want to reflavor an existing race, go for it in your application. It might be tweaked in the real game, but I am flexible. Class restrictions are simply no artificers or Critical Role's gunslinger, blood hunter, or echo knight. No dipping hexblade! Multiclassing is allowed, of course, but we will have to have in story reasons why your character suddenly has xyz powers. You can have any background except Strixhaven. You can probably try to make Eberron or Ravnica work, but since those houses and guilds won't be part of this campaign, really think about it and consider taking a generic background. You can also suggest a background and what skills/tools/languages you might get from it as well as an RP feature.
The character you present me must have a mysterious secret. I am supplying some examples of these below. You do not need to use these goals word for word or at all -- feel free to remix them as suits you in your application.
Mysterious Secret

A couple sentences about you as a player and what you are looking for in a game: I'm a semi veteran D&D player with a very small amount of Dm experience under my belt. In fact the major experience I have as a dm is from playing a duet game with my dad when he got back into D&D after a long hiatus. I am looking to have a fun and atmospheric campaign.
Your time zone: EST
Have you played duet or Curse of Strahd before: I have dmed a duet mini/one shot campaign and I have started Curse of Strahd but never got far past the Death House.
Character Name: Darya Trakev
Race: Dhamphir
Starting Class: Wizard (Bladesinger or Divination)
Starting Feat: War Caster
Background: Haunted One
Backstory: Darya is the child of one of those that were trapped in the Mist after walking through the gates of Barovia and of the few remaining so called noble women of the domain. Due to his nature as a stranger to Barovia, Darya's father kept moving through out the land, using his magic to chase off whatever tried to challenge him. As she grew older her father began to teach her magic in order for her to defend herself if it ever became necessary. After a time it seemed Strahd grew bored with letting the wizard try to find a way out of the mist and attacked the father and daughter wizards. During the attack Darya was mauled by a vampire underling and drained of almost all her blood. Before passing out the last thing she saw was Strahd pushing a sword through her father before disappearing as the blackness took her.
An uncertain amount of time later, Darya woke up with a strange sense of hunger. No matter how much she ate no amount of food or drink seemed to sate this new form of hunger. While still able to function, Darya felt as if she had a nearly constant migraine unable to end the pain. One day during her wandering she was attacked by a small and maddened wolf. After drawing blood from it something over took her and with a sudden surge of strength she latched onto the wound and seemed to tear into the beast like a starved ghoul. Once she regained her senses she realized that her hunger was gone and she could focus. Not sure what was going on with her she began to plan to travel in search of someone that might know what was going on and in order to find the strength to one day avenge her father.
Mysterious Secret: Arcane Mystery. Her father once held an unfinished spell scroll that had been started by the archmage Mordenkainen. After he died Darya became the owner of the scroll and has been studying it when she is able to.

My name is petessius (they/them). I am a parent, prolific gamer, and digital art-dabbler. My play style would fit well with this format. I have experience playing and DMing 5e, so I have a basic understanding of rules, story structure, and party dynamics (I won't make it difficult to form the party with your DMNPCs). I am looking to play a fundamentally good (but broken) person who doesn't fully grasp the danger they are in until it is too late, but presses on through terror towards their goal.
I hope the game is grim and creepy and bloody, but not gratuitously sadistic. I am comfortable putting good characters into hell itself for the sake of the story. I would hope for a tone in the vein of Bloodborne, Supernatural, Stranger Things, Attack On Titan, and the Castlevania animated show. Something deliciously suspenseful and scary without being gross for grossness sake.

Have you played a duet or Curse of Strahd before?: I played one duet that ended amiably once a child was born, but never played Curse of Strahd. I know it is darker and involves vampires.
Character Name: Holly Tavernier (she/her)
Race: Human (F)
Starting Class: Rogue
Starting Feat: Observant
Background: Haunted One
Backstory:Holly Tavernier hails from a crossroads tavern called 'The Last Omen', a frequent haunt for patrollers, pioneers, and hunters. The forest nearby is dark and deep and full of hungry things. One misty morning, a young woman arrives, bleeding from the neck and other lacerations. The Taverniers take the woman in and care for her. Her name is Beatrix. Her wounds heal quickly, but despite the recovery, she continues to feel unwell.
Holly looks after Beatrix and they form a friendship that grows into something more. Hand in hand through the dark forest. Kisses behind the woodshed. But before long, their innocent romance is shattered when Holly pricks her finger on a thorn and Beatrix - now a starved vampire - attacks her.
Holly is able to break free and flees back to 'The Last Omen'. A group of hunters hear the story through sobs and immediately set out to hunt Beatrix. They do not find her.
Afraid, hurt, but... still in love, Holly hopes to one day find Beatrix and - with luck - save her from the darkness that tore them apart.
Mysterious Secret: ‘Strange Romantic''
Anything else to note: I don't have plans to DM a second game at this time, but - if we get along well - I could be convinced. ;) (Books DO be expensive!)
Thank you for you consideration. *bows dramatically*

A couple sentences about you as a player and what you are looking for in a game: I'm the roleplaying type who likes to stick to the character and the environment. I tend to play creatively rather than minmaxing. Your time zone: Central Have you played duet or Curse of Strahd before? No, just the very beginning of Strahd.
Character Name: Roland Montblanc Race: Human Starting Class: Ranger Starting Feat: Lucky (actually ties to his story) Background: Haunted One Backstory: see below Mysterious Secret: prophetic dreams, I'm thinking Anything else to note: he's a lorekeeper, not that he knows a lot or owns a lot but he keeps records in hopes of following in his family footsteps
He's loosely based on Trevor from the Castlevania series. As civilization grew and provided growing security to human populations, his family began losing influence and resources, possibly even becoming an enemy of the established religion. Their decline started before he was even born, and their efforts slowly shifted from curating lore, practicing hunter techniques and providing safety to their community, to just trying to make ends meet. So his own knowledge and training is very spotty, but he might be able to piece together knowledge that his family has left throughout their (now likely abandoned or overtaken) holds and bastions. He has the "heart of darkness" feature which, for the Strahd game, was a result of having nearly all his family massacred in a werewolf attack. This attack - in fact, the entire war of attrition against his family - may have been a carefully executed plan by dark forces.

Hi, Ru. Interested in your duet formats, so I am humbly throwing my hat in the ring.
A couple sentences about you as a player and what you are looking for in a game: I enjoy the roleplaying aspect of the game and the ability to build a character’s story throughout the game, especially how they react and grow with different challenges. I like to interact with other characters through that descriptive roleplay and like to find unique ways to solve challenges. Very interested in exploring a horror setting.

Character Name: Pavel Marsk
Race: VHuman
Starting Class: Bard
Starting Feat: Prodigy:
Background: Charlatan
Backstory: Pavel grew up as a member of a Vistani clan, traveling the lands for trade and stories. Embracing the oral tradition of his clan, he became a troubadour and performer specializing in storytelling and sword dancing. He also picked up the skills of a small-time con-man and gambler, fleecing unsuspecting townspeople during his travels. In one village that was a frequent stop, he had his first bout of teenage love and heartbreak, falling under the charms of a young, eccentric beauty, who also happened to be a vampire. Night after night for a week, he gave himself to the vampire, allowing it to feed without draining him too deeply until one night, a team of monster hunters interrupted the ritual. The charm broken, Pavel recoiled in terror and made his escape, leaving his village and his clan, even as the vampire fled from the hunters. Even today, he does not know if it was truly love or magic, and it fills him with great distrust and shame. He believes he has escaped the past, but has recently had strange, terrible dreams pulling him back into the mist. He is filled with great regret for abandoning his family, but also fears to return.
backstory: Miramar Rothenal was a noble in borovia. Then his manor got burned to the ground by count strahd . He barely escaped into the mountains, were he found a monastery. They trained him. He seemed revenge. So he went to borovia. To kill them all.

Would love to play, sent you a PM! While I haven't DM'd before, also willing to do it, seems like a nice format to learn.
Oh yeah! I saw you. Could you copy and paste the character here? It helps me fully consider.

Hail and well met!

Have you played duet or Curse of Strahd before? No, just the very beginning of Strahd.
Character Name: Roland Montblanc
Race: Human
Starting Class: Ranger
Starting Feat: Lucky (actually ties to his story)
Background: Haunted One
Backstory: see below
Mysterious Secret: prophetic dreams, I'm thinking
Anything else to note: he's a lorekeeper, not that he knows a lot or owns a lot but he keeps records in hopes of following in his family footsteps
Would it help if I told you I own every single book on this website and have content sharing??? LOL

lol T'would help tremendously.

Have you played duet or Curse of Strahd before? No, but very interested in both the game and the duet format. Excited to explore the individual roleplay dynamics and increased interaction with NPCs.
