RL and Grimbald head to where Gnasher was barking, towards Dar Gremath's stables. There are a few guards talking with the resistance leader and a dead body on the ground. Gnasher is with Dar Gremath and barks when he detects the dwarf and shifter but then stops and wags his tail when he recognises them.
Dar Gremath greets the pair and points to the dead guard.
"This lad was outside my door when he was attacked, stabbed from behind. Gnasher was in my room and must have heard it and raised the alarm. No one I spoke to has seen anything. And some of our night shift guards are missing. I expect to find more bodies."
Dar Gremath peers at RL and Grimbald. "I heard you were also targeted. Is everyone hale?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"We are well enough, lucky you had the dog, Gnasher do you reckon you could sniff out a stranger? could be someone in our midst, disguised or a shape-changer... no offence" Survival tracking (within the confines of the village) 19

Augustin will walk around from location to location around the town and use the nights actions to explain how we must all stay together and remain vigilant. If it wasn’t for the strangers turned family he had with him, he would be dead (again).
if anyone has any grievances he will sit and listen to them and try and work it out.
Side note: after smashing the imps brain in he would like to attune and use the red sceptre moving forward. He recalls how a blunt object may have been better against some enemies such as the skeleton.

Roll persuasion or intimidate check with disadvantage. If you pass DC12 you'll get two successes.
Gnasher isn't trained for scent tracking. Scent and hearing are fine at night, but not tracking by sight, it will always be with disadvantage. Gnasher does sniff everyone he meets though, but he reacts normally to them and them to him.
After an hour spent searching around, Gnasher nor RL nor Grimbald find any sign of the assassin.
Man that disadvantage was harsh, first roll dirty 20. Second was 7.
rolled on dnd beyond as I’m on the phone.
Yeah it was just after they realised their leader was nearly killed and six of the night watch were found dead. And rumours are circulating that the party, seen as their best fighting force, were badly hurt. So was always going to be tough. You can try again tomorrow when things are settled.
Since RL failed in that skill check he will try to redeem himself by teaching those that might not be up to fighting the skills of how to stabilise someone that is unconscious.
Medicine check (if allowed) 22. Guidance 1
I'll allow it!
Successes 6, Failure 1.
5 or 6 successes Rick? just checking after getting my brain scrambled by the Assassin 😃
Vakiel will have spent time that day around helping prepare and shore up any defences, maybe helping train fighters. Nothing of great import but just being seen by community members so it’s known that once again the IC tried and failed.
Then he will fall into a deep sleep hoping to sleep off the rest of his injuries. Shared room again?
In private, Grimbald will express concern to the party on how the assassin knew where the party were sleeping. Are there Iron Circle spies in the town? Is there a traitor? How did they get in and, presumably, where did they go to? Grimbald suggests a trap, only known to the party for the next night. A simple 'pillows under a blanket' while the party watches nearby. Future town watches to comprise of four people each, but each individual from a different town 'faction'
Cool day, light mist. Grimbald, RL, and Esa (using druidcraft cantrip) expect rain in the afternoon.
The party has successfully long rested.
First thing in the morning Grimbald and RL look for tracks of the assassin. It looks like she came from the north, so not across the river. She must have gotten across the river somewhere else, then hit the village from the rear. She left the same way, but after a while the tracks stop - she has covered her tracks. Does this mean she intends to come back tonight?
The party eat breakfast, it is less than they are used to, food is running out in the village, and no one is attending to the farms. The party attend Dar Gremath's morning meeting with the other leaders. It is a sour affair. There are obvious factions and arguments, rivalries, jealousies. Some teambuilding work needs to be done. Each leader reports poor morale of their troops.
Dar Gremath does not expect the Iron Circle to attack today. He has had a strange report from Fernie, his best scout and your guide to Marl which seems like ages ago now, that some prisoners have been taken to Marl. He doesn't know what that's about. He is worried that they might use them as human shields. The mist will favour attackers rather than defenders, so he hopes there will be none tomorrow or if there is, it won't last long. Rain will favour defenders.
The meeting breaks up, people grumbling as they leave.
The day before the battle! The party may do as they wish.
DM's Note: The party can make some attempts on the skill challenge today and this is your last day to complete it. You need 10 successes before 3 failures. You have 5 successes so far and 1 failure.
Can RL help or will he be in the way?
Grimbald and Rustling Leaves can hear Gnasher barking in the distance. It is an aggressive, savage bark.
Actions?
Grimbald is very keen to investigate.. who is joining him?

where do we stand on successes and failures please?
Still 5 successes and 1 failure. Augustin's rousing speech was a bonus chance with no consequences.

Other than being observant and wary of potential spies, grimbald will help with the ditch digging.
