After having first stood frozen in terror at the sight, the teenage tiefling, despite his fear, as if in a nightmare, approaches, squats slowly beside the body, and in vain, searches the man’s face for life. But seeing only cold death, Dev’s voice, breathless, finds the others in the dank alleyway.
“It’s him. It’s Conroy Pekese!”

"Well isn't this a pickle", Normont says as he starts to focus and then scan the area for any clues as to where the killers retreated to, or worse, signs they are still lurking.
"Not sure there is much talking to be done here, sorry Nerak. Jasper and Quinn would be handy right now", he says as he looks and then his eyes widen. "Should we warn the others, the apartment may be dangerous".
Nerak gasps at the scene and shrinks back around the corner at the sight. "Mm ya lets uh... Dev you said you were fast. Go warn the others something may be up." A few glyphs circle around his wrists as he prepares to cast Mage Armor of any threat is detected. He goes to speak to Normont and Lokilia but stops as he thinks about his words and dismisses it. Instead he watches to see what Lokilia will do an takes a glance around the corner to watch Normont looking for clues for just a moment before turning back around the corner and deciding to keep an eye out for anyone nearby that might be involved. Probably best to stay out of their way.
Lokilia sees the blood and then the man on the ground and pauses. "Perhaps," she starts, but from Dev's reaction she doubts what she was going to say. "Are we sure he's dead? I might be able to offer a little bit of healing." Slowly she approaches the body, just to double check. (Medicine check: 16)
Hearing Nerak urging Dev to warn the others, she interrupts her check on Conroy for just a moment. "I could help you move faster too, if you need it," she says, looking at Dev.

Nerak cocks his head and notes a small scrap of bloodstained, em- broidered cloth with a few strands of long, blond hair clinging to it under Conroy’s right arm.

Lokilia quickly establishes that the man was stabbed to death and has been dead for some time.....it is likely though not certain that they are not the first to discover the body as it is in a fairly public area.
"Easy, Quinn," Jasper mentions to the armed Ashari. "May be best not to frighten folks on our way in. There must be some other way. Quinn or I could give someone a boost, get them over the wall, and they can find a way to unlock the gate. Or... we could always just awkwardly wait outside for someone to open the gate and then slip in once they leave."
Jasper is going to look for any gap or flaw in the gate that could help their party get past it and into the apartment complex.

While Theron checks to see if the gate is locked Magnus moves up next to him and leans on the wall just to the right of the lock on the gate against the wall, with his hands behind his back. He mumbles some words under his breath as his fingers move in intricate ways and a ghostly purple hand appears next to him and moves to the gate to see if there is any lock mechanism on the other side he can just turn, helping Theron with his check.
Whispering to Theron, "Little helping hand if you need it."
Lokilia, being near to the body, tries to take a look at whatever Nerak is pointing out under Conroy's arm. (Assuming she can find it:) She tries to very gently extract it and takes a look at it. (investigation: 14) As she looks at it she asks, "Was this what you were referring to Nerak?"
Normont reaches out a small hand towards the set of keys, gently picking them up.
"Did anyone get the number of his apartment? These keys have a number 11 on them", he mentions and then picks up the small knife. "He obviously didn't even have time to defend himself", he adds sadly.
"What you got there Lokilia?". A mixture of pity for the deceased is conflicting with an excitement at having a mystery to solve. Whitestone had been relatively crime free, and he certainly hadn't investigated a murder before.
He looks to the others and scans their faces, seeing no excitement at all. The fact they were all sticking around impresses him though. Most folks would have cut and run or at least kept their distance.

A small piece of embroidered cloth, she does not recognise the pattern, there are several long blond hairs adhering to the cloth, it is definitely not the corpses hair.

The wall is almost three metres high but its likely that with a boost they could climb it, though Jasper reckons the top is likely lined with barbs or spikes. The gate is solid iron and very sturdy, there is a single key hole near the handle.

The gate is indeed locked, and though Magnus' hand does find a latch the other side it is unable to turn, there is likely a keyhole on the other side as well. These are quite secure apartments apparently...

"I don't suppose any of you have a sheet of paper?", Normont asks suddenly.
As Normont looks to the others past them he can see people passing on the main street, they have likely been seen here already....though no one has entered the alley just yet....
Dev is lost in morbid thought when Normont asks, “should we warn the others,” but soon, he looks down the alleyway, locking eyes unintentionally with a passing townsperson.
“They’re gonna think I..,,” he begins, then his mind still in a dream, he stands, absently unties a small scroll case from his belt and hands it to Normont.
“I can… distract.”
Reaching under his cloak as he walks to the street end of the alley, the teenager then produces a small set of intricately marked pan pipes, and covertly blows a short scale, do-re-mi-fa-so!
Upon his shoulder, the sigil of the city Watch appears. He blows a second brief melody, more intricate, followed by whispered words in a tongue of darkness and pain. The sound swirls about him, like a whirlwind at first but slowing and gaining intensity.
It is the sound of Jasper’s voice, confident, commanding.
His hood pulled forward as far as it will go, in the flickering light of the nearest street lamp, Dev’s mouth now moves, lip-syncing with the sound of Jasper’s voice, which repeats every few seconds. Dev will re-cast the illusions as needed.
(OOC: Inside the scroll case, Normont will find a piece of paper with what might be a few scratches of music notation upon it, and a second unmarked sheet. Also, ink and a quill. I have described two chained castings of Minor Illusion, which, along with the lip-syncing, I hope will support a deception roll if needed to corral passersby away for a few minutes.)

The keys have a small leather strap hanging off them stamped with “11,”.
