Since getting my hands on a ChatGPT-4 account, I've been pleasantly surprised at it's capabilities, and I've been working on a home project that I'm now hoping some of you will help me test: my "GPT Solo DM."
I'm wanting to gather three participants, each of whom will play in their own solo D&D mini-campaign (only one-to-three short "sessions") where ChatGPT-4, which I've tweaked into a DM Bot (one with long-term note-taking capabilities) will be in complete control of the game. It will: create the fantasy world for each player, describe the setting, provide narrative, prompt players for actions, speak for NPCs, interact with your characters, etc. It'll even provide the occasional AI-generated picture of a location/NPC you come across (although I may have to prompt it to do that sometimes, as its not very generous with those.) We'll continue play until (1) the campaign reaches a natural conclusion, (2) you tire of having an AI bot as a DM, or (3) I feel we've reached a point where no further testing is needed... although as I take notes along the way, I may make a couple of system changes that might impact the DM's behavior, so please be prepared for that. I don't intend to spend more than 2-3 months on this testing, at the very most.
When we start play, I'll show you the initial prompt I provided to the bot, and its initial response. I will then be taking your posts and providing each directly to my GPT, and directly posting the output from the GPT in response. You simply treat each scenario as you would a normal PbP session. I would ask though, that when asked for a roll, please do so in the post editor rather than on the character sheet itself.
Please don't expect this to be absolute magic--it's promising, but not perfect. In particular, it's quite rail-roady, and tries to make everything as narrative as possible, including combat. I'm working to enforce the hard-numbers aspects of combat, for example. That said, feel free to try to push the system in terms of what it can logically or intellectually handle from your character; we might both be surprised at the responses. Be willing to at least make a couple of posts a day, and I will do the same.
Unless otherwise indicated, every feature used to build your character should come from the PHB, Xanathar's, or Tasha's. To apply, I'll need:
- Character name - Ability Scores (use Standard Array or Point Buy, please) - Race (let's stick to PHB races including Variant Human for now) - Class(es) and any subclass(es) - Background - A brief backstory (one to three sentences) - A link to a completed character sheet, with only starting equipment plus one common healing potion (feel free to swap out mundane equipment, provided costs are equivalent)
I will be looking for a level 1 character, a level 2 character, and a level 3 character (please only apply for one of those slots!) Yes, multiclassing is allowed, just be sure to state which is the starting class. And note, I'm more seeking "interesting" characters that will provide novel roleplay, mechanical and/or narrative interactions with the DM, rather than simple chatterboxes or damage-dealers. Having a weird self-referential backstory the DM needs to comprehend. Choosing a spell that is typically hard to adjudicate. Giving the character a personality that tosses occasional French phrases into their dialogue. That sort of thing.
And, something I've been wanting to do since thinking of DMing a PbP game: other PbP DMs take priority in the selection process. This is as a "thank you!" for running for those of us who can't, or who just don't.
If you've DM'd a game on DDB, either to completion, or at least through a beginning arc (and at least gracefully ended it,) simply note that on your application, with a link to the campaign thread. While not guaranteeing you a spot over non-DMs, such a link definitely puts you way ahead.
I'll choose each player by late Sunday night (EST,) will inform everyone shortly after, and should have campaign threads up and all 3 games ready to start no later than Tuesday night.
Looking forward to testing this system out with a few experienced players!
High Concept: battle scarred veteran man-hunter with borderline personality disorder
AI notes: First round as gloomstalker is treated differently(+1 attack per action with 1d8 bonus damage/+10 feet of movement). treat nails as darts. Character uses Nets/ball bearings/caltrops/flaming oil to control the battlefield. Swears in draconic.
Description: Shadow is almost completely unnoticeable. Slightly darker skin than average, but not remarkably so. Mid-length brownish blonde hair with a touch of gray, and eyes that seem blue ine moment and gray/green the next. His clothes were once a dark blue workman’s outfit but they have been washed so many times they are a muddled gray. He wears a tool belt with several pouches and tools and a long wooden tool-box on a sling hangs by his side. The only distinctive feature about him is the well-worn hilt of a veteran’s blade thrust through his belt.
Backstory: The military organization has laws. When those laws are broken, someone has to hunt down criminals and every one of them is a trained killer - but even the army has problems normal military police can not or will not solve. That’s where Special Investigator Sekolath came in. Whether it was a senior officer on the take, a special forces deserter, or a thief selling stolen military-grade weapons to organized crime made no difference to him- his passion was the hunt. He spent so much time deep undercover he barely remembered his name and had lost all family and friends when it came time to retire. He used to be the best - now who was he without a badge, without a Hunt?

Not a PbP DM(yet) but hopefully this bumps your post and gets some more applicants.
Thanks! The AI notes for your character will be interesting. (At this point, I'm thinking it might even be able to invent a few words and phrases of Draconic for you.)
I just so happen to have a 1st level sorcerer I’ve been wanting to try out and I love the idea of using AI to dm. So I’d love to help you out.
I have run several pbp campaigns advertised through DDB but I run them on discord. Currently running a Curse of Strahd game and a Icewind Dale game.
- Character name: Draxis Stormscale - Ability Scores (use Standard Array or Point Buy, please) S 16 D 12 C 10 I 8 W 13 C 16 - Race (let's stick to PHB races including Variant Human for now) Dragonborn (green) - Class(es) and any subclass(es) sorcerer (draconic) - Background: hermit - A brief backstory (this is longer than requested)
Draxis was found as a baby abandoned in the forest by an old Dragonborn woman named Vexa. Vexa was a bit of a witch, and she had the ability to commune with the spirits of ancient dragons. Vexa was also blind.
As Draxis grew, he helped tend Vexa’s gardens, delivered herbs and tinctures to nearby towns and homes, and learned the ways of herbalism. Vexa also introduced Draxis to spirit talking and taught him about his draconic ancestry. Draxis ate it up, striving to honor those that came before him. But he also saw the way the townsfolk looked at him. The fear and hatred in their eyes. He knew that the chromatic dragons had always been evil, and that conflicted with his ancestral pride.
Having a lot of time to himself, Draxis’ own spirit engagements led him to a discovery. First, he learned that all dragons had common ancestry. The chromatic and metallic all hailed from the same stock. That gave him hope. But he also found another spirit, one that was supposed to be banished. None other than Tiamat, the dragon goddess of all chromatic dragons. Tiamat spoke to Draxis, teaching him the ways of the chromatic dragons and unlocking his draconic powers. He claimed his dragon name - Stormscale - and as he began to learn he decided he needed to see the world beyond Vexa’s doorstep.
The old woman understood, for though she was blind, she had more vision than most. She knew the torment inside the young Draxis. And she knew the only way he’d find his path was to walk it on his own.
Draxis has emerald-green scales with hints of darker hues, reflecting his chromatic heritage. He stands tall and imposing, with piercing amber eyes that betray his inner conflict. Despite his imposing appearance, there's a certain softness to his expression, hinting at his connection to nature.
Draxis is a complex character with a mix of pride in his lineage and a longing for acceptance. He is fiercely loyal to those he cares about but struggles to trust easily due to past experiences of rejection. His love for nature and herbalism stems from a desire to connect with something pure and untainted by the prejudices of society.
Draxis seeks to carve out a place for himself in the world where he can be accepted for who he is, rather than judged for his lineage. He strives to use his magical abilities and knowledge of herbalism to help others and make a positive impact on the world, despite the challenges he faces.
Draxis constantly battles with the darker impulses of his chromatic dragon heritage, fearing that they may one day consume him if he isn't careful. He struggles with the temptation to embrace his power fully, knowing that it could lead him down a path of destruction and further isolation.
Throughout his journey, Draxis learns to embrace both sides of his identity, finding strength in his heritage while also recognizing the importance of forging his own path. Along the way, he discovers allies who accept him for who he is and learns to trust in the power of friendship and acceptance. Ultimately, Draxis finds a sense of peace within himself, knowing that he is more than the sum of his ancestry and that he has the power to shape his own destiny.
Hi, I’m not experienced as this would be my first ever campaign! However I love the idea of using chat gpt as a DM & would love to be part of your experiment. I want to learn to play so I can eventually DM, both PBP & campaigns for my wife & kids. Thanks!

The in-post rolling function does not always function 'normally'. Recently, I posted a roll and it showed a "9" for a 1d20+3 Mouse-ing over the result showed what the program did... which was a 13+5 = 18. I assume the extra in the 'pluses' was due to proficiency above and beyond the character's normal +3. WHY is displayed a '9'.... idk.
And in another 'post roll' is displayed a '21' but never showed the pop up box for how it came to that number.
So, FYI and something to monitor as your chatbot works the posts.

Hi vetallica!
I hate to say this, but new players should really not participate in this experiment. The bot does not quite function like a human, and in many areas still does not do what a player should typically expect in a game. It would be a very bad way to learn the rules and/or format of play, especially if you plan to DM yourself.
That said, I'd encourage you to apply to other games on the forum; there are excellent DMs on here who would love to help a new player learn the ropes!
- Character name Horton Hildebrandt - Ability Scores 15, 13, 14, 11, 16, 9 (with standard human +1s across the board) - Race Human - Class Cleric - Divine Domain of Light / Level 2 - Background Acolyte -- Feature: Shelter of the Faithful
- A brief backstory A bit of a bookworm. A bit of a loner. Horton would wander the grounds of the church where he was raised and trained - "to feel the sun on my skin" - as being cloistered inside could become oppresive at times.
One day, Horton had spent the day cleaning around the graves and stones at the nearby cemetary - and got caught out as the sun went down.
Shadows sprang forth and Horton feared he would soon be joining those 'resting' in the ground. As he was enveloped by the Shadows' cold embrace, Horton cried out desperately for help. As though answering his prayer, a pale, radiant light, like a silvery moonbeam, suddenly emanated from the ground near Horton's feet. The shadows were disintegrated by this light, leaving Horton shuddering, kneeling upon the dirt - where he spied the source of the Light - a polished stone with the symbol of Lathandir etched into it's surface.
The study and worship of Lathandir became Horton's primary focus from that moment onward.
