I am recruiting a group to play through one of the short adventures from Journeys into the Radiant Citadel using the 2024 rules. The game will be run here on DDB, with an IC thread here on the PBP forum and the OOC thread in PMs. The adventure we run will be dependent on whatever the players chosen prefer. Here's the hook for the game:
Many lands lie beyond the realm of the Sword Coast. Some of these lands are home to wondrous magicks and ancient techniques unique to the peoples of these lands. Sadly, some would seek to lie and manipulate, pillage and steal, and commit many other crimes, all in search of these powerful tools so as to use them for their own benefit.
But, there are also those who are champions of the downtrodden and oppressed, who seek to bring balance, justice, and peace to the world. And in no place are these values exemplified greater than the Shield-Wardens of the Radiant Citadel, a force of elite heroes headquartered in the massive astral diamond that floats through the outer planes.
Your band of adventurers is a team of elite Shield-Wardens, sent to patrol one of the lands connected to the Citadel, and make sure everything is well. But, when a disturbance appears and unrest is on the rise, you know it is time to fulfill your duty and restore balance.
If that sounds interesting, read the Character Creation and DM expectation sections below and apply!
DM Expectations and Rules
Be nice and play fair. Don't ruin someone else's fun. don't be a problem player (Prima donna, rules lawyer, murder hobo, ETC). And, for the record, you can say it's what your character would do, but it's also your job to make and play a character that doesn't ruin someone else's fun.
Post at least once every 48 hours, or 24 hours in combat. If you know something is going to come up, tell me and I'll make sure not to issue a warning. Otherwise, you'll get a warning
Warnings: You get five warnings. if you use those up, I'll have to check in privately. If the behavior does not improve, then we'll have to consider whether you should continue with the group or not.
Safety tools will be in place. No exceptions. If there's any specific things you'd like me to avoid, I'll make sure to accamodate (I can't spell apparentally. There, you see?). If something in game makes you uncomfortable, send me a PM simply saying "X" and I'll move on as quickly as possible. After, I'll follow up with you to make sure I understand the situation so I can avoid similar triggers in the future.
The game will be strictly PG-13. We don't know the age of users on here, and all ages above the required user age for the site (which is 13) are encouraged to join, though I will say if you do not have the emotional maturity to treat the game and the other players (which includes me) with kindness, seriousness, respect, and civility, do not apply
Breaking of these rules will result in a reminder and possibly warning (and very rarely multiple, depending on the severity of the breakage)
Be creative! If something doesn't quite work within the rules, but it would better the story by doing so, just ask and I'd be happy to consider whatever it is,
There will be no house rules, unless something arises mid game that is a glaring flaw in the system, which I don't there are any.
(Side note: I feel so mean writing all of this. I hope you guys don't think I'm a super mean DM. I promise I'm not!)
Character Creation Rules
2024 DND materials only. I do not have a Master Tier sub to share the stuff from the PHB, but if one of the players does and would be willing to share the content, that would be greatly appreciated. Of course, I can always home-brew versions of the options you want to use quite easily, if need be.
Roll stats in this thread. Re-roll ones always. If you don't like your stats, you can re-roll, but this time it must be 're-roll ones once' and you must use the new rolls. If you don't like those rolls, you can reroll again, but this time you should 'never re-roll ones'
Characters will start at a level determined by the adventure they chose.
Equipment and magic items will be determined based on the adventure the group chooses. But, I am generous with Magic Items, so do not worry.
Application Format:
Character Name and Pronouns: please try to have a serious name, and all pronouns, genders, and sexualities are welcome here.
Character Species and Physical Description: One paragraph is good for the description.
Character Classes and Sub-classes: I ask that you choose three classes (as well as subclass for each class) that fits your character concept, so that way we can mold the party so everyone has diverse capabilities and I don't have to factor in choice of class when picking players. If you are chosen, we can work with the rest of the group which of their options everyone will play, though of course it will be up to you for the final decision. Group synergy, y'all!
Character Background and Backstory: it won't matter too much but 1-3 paragraphs of backstory is great if you want to. Please put it in a spoiler so as not to make the thread super long when people are going through it.
Recruitment will end at 28th of November, and the group will be chosen by the end of the month. I will be accepting five players. If you have any questions, let me know!
~Raccoon_Master
Edit: A note on character creation: Because of the nature of the application process, and the fact that the adventures themselves are very story-focused, I would say building your character of concepts and themes will lend itself more organically to the process, especially concerning the class selection, since if your character has similar mechanics in the classes, but different themes and such, when choosing the class it may alter the vision and story of the character.
I’m interested and can also share books if needed.
Character placeholder will edit and fill out when I can.
edit: deleting ability scores here. They’ve changed like 4 times while I populated the details in this post. Rerolling below in thread.
Name: Talon Greystone (he) Species: Human (might go Goliath based on class) - Talon Greystone is a 6’1” human with an athletic, scarred frame, sun-bronzed skin, and piercing gray eyes. His dark brown hair is tied back, and he wears practical, weathered clothing with a tarnished pendant from his past. Rugged yet refined, he carries a well-worn longsword (weapon may change based on class), reflecting a life of both combat and subtle sophistication. Classes: Rogue (Swashbuckler), Fighter (Arcane Archer), Barbarian (Berserker) - in no particular order Backstory:
Talon Greystone was born into a family of stonemasons in a rugged frontier town known for its quarries and harsh winters. From a young age, he was taught the value of hard work, discipline, and the unyielding strength of stone. Talon excelled in his father’s trade, but he was also restless, yearning for something beyond the slow, steady life his family envisioned for him.
When he was sixteen, a devastating raid by marauders razed his hometown, leaving Talon as one of the few survivors. With no home and no family, he left the ruins of his past behind and set out into the world. He made a living doing whatever he could: guarding caravans, working as a dockhand, and taking jobs in places no one else dared. Over time, he honed his skills as a fighter, learning to use both brute strength and strategic cunning to survive.
Despite his hardened exterior, Talon carries a strong sense of justice instilled by his parents. He is haunted by the memory of his lost home and secretly dreams of building a new life that would honor his family’s legacy. However, trust does not come easily to him, and he often keeps others at arm’s length.
Talon now seeks opportunities to grow stronger, not just for survival, but to protect those who cannot defend themselves—a promise he made to himself on the night his world burned.
Looks to have solid potential, though 3 class options can require a pretty wide variation in the character utility!
So, what do the dice gods say?

One dump stat in the purest sense of the word! My first instinct here isn't my normal first instinct. I'm thinking healer role. The 2 builds that support it are pretty clear, the third is a bit of a stretch: Warlock (Celestial Patron), Cleric (Life Domain), Bard (College of Lore). Cleric is the no brainer build, but I'm curious about how effective the Warlock build could be.
I have a lot to work through before I can answer your application format. All off the cuff so far!
Old player here. I've yet to have the opportunity to play in the 2024 rules, nor this module, so I really hope to be what you're looking for!
Name: Arcturus Kell (He / Him) Species: Human Description: Arcturus is of average Human height with curly chestnut hair and dark eyes. He is strong of build and possesses the demeanor of someone who has known combat. He can be quiet, but has a steely determination in his gaze and a gentle smile for close acquaintances or small children. Class: (in order of preference) (1) Fighter, Psi Warrior; (2) Cleric, War; (3) Monk, Elements Backstory:
Arcturus was born on a Helm ship filled to the brim with religious pilgrims. Devotees to Celestian, the Far Traveler. The group were following a shooting star in the belief that it would lead them to a yet undiscovered world. Whether it would or not, they never discovered. The ship was attacked by Thri-kreen slavers. Outmatched, the pilgrims lost. They were sold, and so Arcturus' earliest memories were being raised in a slave orphanage, undergoing training towards a life of servitude. Then the Shield Wardens liberated him and many others. The Radiant Citadel were not seeking to free slaves, but while investigating a series of kidnappings from their lands the orphanage was discovered. The slaves were freed and offered vassalage to the Radiant Citadel. Since then all Arcturus could think of was becoming a Shield Warden. He has trained and sought adventure for many years to be worthy of his current role.
“The important thing is not how long you live. It's what you accomplish with your life. While I live, I want to shine. I want to prove that I exist. If I could do something really important. That would definitely carry on into the future. And so, if I were to disappear, I think that all I have accomplished will go on. That is, that would mean that it's living, right?” – grovyle
Human (savage attacker) 6’ 225 lbs short brown hair square jaw brown eyes tanned skin. Well muscled deep voice. Trained horseback rider.

Noble background backstory below.
Darius Lang always succeeded at whatever he did. Sports, academic studies, equestrian skills, combat, divine studies, he married had two sons and a loyal steed. His life changed drastically the day his wife’s lineage was revealed. He obsessed over having been oblivious to her infernal blood, so much so that she took her children and fled. Darius has not seen them for many years and has learned the error of his ways, but is not open about his personal life.

Character Name and Pronouns: Chantilly "Tills" Bristletoes Any/Any (They, She, He, It)
Character Species and Physical Description: Halfling, Wide framed, often mistaken for a dwarf, round features, russet colored skin, with a shaved head. Other features to be determined during play
Character Classes and Sub-classes: (I'm good with any class, but primary three are...)
Paladin (Most likely oath of the ancients)
Druid (Circle TBD)
Wizard (Divination, Enchantment, or Illusion)
Character Background and Backstory: Soldier
Assigned female at birth Tills grew up a farmer's daughter on a barley farm. She didn't take kindly to the status quo and how it treated women or people with what she saw as healthy curiosity. Tills started an uprising of capable women and other downtrodden folk that allied with their vision and overturned the local government. She's since had to leave the farmstead to help rekindle relationships and seek fortune that they can bring home to help their people prosper

Character Name and Pronouns: Candle Indradark (anything in the They-She-Cutie-Littleone Spectrum)
Character Species and Physical Description: standing at 3ft in stature, Indra has a tiny upturned nose and exaggerate eyes that look upward with curiosity and hope at the world. Often in Tattered clothes, the forgetful human woman is often mistaken for a child. Having grown up within a family of rock gnomes, her facial expressions are those of her serious workshop gramps and her whimsical and kind mother.
Character Classes and Sub-classes: I invision Indra to be a 《Trickery Cleric》, sneaky and not extremely healing oriented. Let me Look closely at the subclasses for 《Paladin》 , I think anything but Vengeance works. As for a third option maybe 《Gloomstalker Ranger?》 I imagine her to have a bit of a bite when angered, a knack for cleaver problem solving, but also a little bit of healing caring for others sweetness to her.
Character Background and Backstory:
Like a Candle in the Darkness, her foster family found her left on their stoop one day... the IndraDarks were a humble family of Gnomes who never made problems for anyone… maybe that’s why whoever left Candle there chose them…
and so Indra as her friends came to call her in her adulthood, grew up not knowing for many years she was a human at all. Her birth mother must have not wanted her, perhaps due to her size, perhaps for other reasons…
Coming of age, Indra found the courage to talk to her adopted mother about leaving for the world, to see it in her short human lifespan. Her mother lamented, “I guess you’ve always had that human curiosity to wonder what’s beyond that next hilltop… it’s ok sweety, we will always be here if you ever need a place to put your head. Go shine and light up this world; that’s what family is for anyway: to give you steady roots that hold the rocky earth; and also wings to fly when the courage comes. Just don’t ever think you can’t come home, no matter what you hear?”
I attempted to make a character but then edited my background and it rerolled the stats... apparently I fail at posting, and so I deleted the post entirely. May I repost?
Character Name and Pronouns: Tillo Tistlebit - He/Him
Character Species and Physical Description: Lightfoot halfling
Character Classes and Sub-classes: Rogue-Mastermind (party buff), Arificer - Alchemist (a lover of the forest and all it has to offer), Cleric-Grave Domain (if there's another rogue to play off)
Character Background and Backstory:
A halfling with a knack for navigating the shadows and a heart just as likely to be swayed by gold as by goodwill. Standing a mere three feet tall, Tillo's size belies his enormous courage and cunning. With tousled chestnut hair and eyes sparkling with mischief, he wears a well-worn leather jacket filled with pockets for all his tools and trinkets, essential for his rescues and escapades.
Born in the Cormyr kingdom, the bustling trade town of Waymoot, Tillo quickly learned that being small could be a significant advantage. He carved out a niche for himself as a scout and rescuer, specializing in slipping into dangerous places unnoticed, from collapsing mines to bandit-infested ruins. He's the person desperate families turn to when a loved one goes missing in perilous locales, and adventurers seek out when they need a guide through treacherous territories. With his trusty mastiff big enough to ride, he has a special relationship with the temple of Tyr being so lucky and they often ask him to get starter adventures out of trouble that have gotten in over their heads.
He speaks a few languages of the forest folk to negotiate, specifically goblins and giants, so as to make passage easier. And he's always on the lookout for a good wagon driver to aid. The crafting of holistic poison/potions is his signature.
