Class:Bard (Lore)/ Rogue (Mastermind) - Depending on the campaign setting and party.
Appearance:It wouldn't take long for a pair of wandering eyes to behold the 6'1 Half-Elf leaning back in his seat enjoying a glass of wine. He held a lean build yet it was clear that anybody else in the room could probably best him in a show of strength. His hair was a dark brown and swept to one side and partially slicked back; It was stylish yet practical enough to be out of his face. He also sported neatly maintained facial hair in the form of a tidy beard and moustache. Immediately it would be made clear the individual in question takes pride in their appearance.
Like the man, his clothes while practical have an air of quality to them. A simple white buttoned shirt made from some soft material was tucked into some non-descript travelling pants which ended in a pair of tall travelling boots. Resting atop the white shirt was a brown leather jacket that is clearly well worn, yet seems almost ceremonial in that it has etchings sewn and engraved onto the leather, particularly on the right shoulder. A sash of turquoise material functioned as a belt which held an assortment of pouches, cases and most curiously a flask where one would normally expect to see a sword. The same material is also found around his neck loosely in the form of a scarf.
Completing his garb is a well-worn hat the same colour as his jacket with a vibrant turquoise feather, something most exotic. Either across his back or in his hands is a beautifully carved loot adorned in glyphs and runes, and to the common person that would be enough to assume him as a Bard. The individual seemed to almost emit an aura of being relaxed and happy, a smile is all too often on his features.
Backstory: Chyme Whisperheart is not your run of the mill adventurer who lost his parents or is on some quest of revenge for a childhood wrong doing. In fact, he lived an excellent childhood. Across the lands and kingdoms the name Whisperheart is synonymous of stories, lore and adventure! For the name has for generations committed themselves to the lifestyle of the Bard. Naturally Chyme is no exception. His father Thaddeus was an Elven Bard who often travelled and performed his kins adventures, it was in the human city of (Campaign appropriate city name here) he met Belissa, a human cartographer. The pair shared their love for adventure and the world, and eventually their love for each other. It didn't take long for the Half-Elf child they named Chyme to be born and begin his adventure in this world.
His upbringing was a sheltered one, the Whisperhearts lived a life of ease and borderline nobility. At a young age Chyme was taught the ways of the world through the art of study. His father and various family friends would tutor Chyme in a variety of subjects, primarily histories, the workings of the arcane and most importantly culture and civility. The Half-Elf was a curious student, always asking questions and wanting to learn more, he would spend his days being taught and his evenings teaching himself. He excelled in some areas but was hopeless at whatever fencing lessons or swordplay he attempted, alas not everyone can be perfect.
While the Whisperhearts were by no means a noble family, they still bore a self-created crest so others could identify their work or claims. It was a simple crest, a pair of sprawling antlers which reflected that of the graceful glade elks that occupied the homeland of the Whisperhearts. His ancestors always believed these creatures held immeasurable intelligence and would use their companionship and traits as a mount on the road. Besides, Whisperhearts love attention and riding an elk is a sure way to garner it.
The years flew by as they have a habit of doing, and as Chyme aged he began to explore the natural magic that coursed through his veins as a Whisperheart. His father taught him to channel this magic in the form of music and concentration as his ancestors always have. It was around this time that Chyme was given his own pet to care and look after, it was a chore that would grow responsibility into youths. The little white elk quickly became Chyme's best friend, especially since he had no siblings. The newfound companion was given the name Yavin. It was around this time that Thaddeus offered to take Chyme and Yavin on the road, showing them first hand the great cities across the lands. Naturally these sights only teased the hunger in Chyme's heart for adventure, and the Half-Elf swore to sate that hunger when he could. At 18, and with permission from his parents Chyme set off on his own adventures travelling the lands as he saw fit with Yavin. His father gifted him a lute made from the same wood as his crib, which he had always cherished, it was adorned in glyphs and Chyme felt such a connection to his family while playing it that music and magic came so easily.
The first few years of travelling were rough, while Chyme boasted a great skillset of knowledge and music he had to cultivate his own street smarts. He would join groups in hopes of adventure only to be beaten and robbed when they left towns. Numerous times he thought about turning back to the safety of his family, but he had to prove himself. He was a Whisperheart and his ancestors were counting on him to hold his chin up and continue the family name.
It wasn't until his early 20's that Chyme began to figure it all out. He had built himself up as a familiar name in most taverns, sharing stories and tagging along on what adventures he could get himself into. Things however would quickly change. He was confronted by a shady character by the name of Angril who offered the Bard a great sum of coin to eavesdrop on a local lord who had a fondness towards music. Seeing no harm Chyme agreed, and shared what information was discussed around the table. This simple task opened up an entirely new network for Chyme, a far shadier one.
Through the years, Chyme fancied himself as a spy or an investigator. Somebody you would contact if you were having trouble with a particular task or wanted information. Using his reputation as a Whisperheart, the Bard could get himself into some private settings. His own network of connections was beginning to grow as well. He worked in this business for a few years, growing his skillset and outlook on the world.
Here he is now. A young adult in his early-mid 20's looking to go on an adventure, to meet new people and do what good he can in the world. He isn't a fighter, but he is an extremely capable friend and a fierce companion with a wicked talent for wordplay and getting his way.
Personality:Chyme considers himself as a big brother. He is an intelligent individual with a broad set of skills, and due to his upbringing he feels almost entrusted with the responsibility of guiding a party and keeping them safe. He is a laid back individual and looks for the good in every moment, often cracking jokes and bolstering the mood of those around him. He has an aura of confidence and always holds his chin up high.
He is a realist, he understands how the world works having experienced a fair bit of it in different lights. He considers himself a good person and will do whatever he must to get the job done, and do whatever is needed of him. His family name means everything to him and he carries himself with a degree of pride of duty.
As a DnD character:The Bard is a pure support character. Charisma and Intelligence being his highest stat, with Wisdom and Dexterity being tied for third. His skills naturally gravitate towards people skills such as insight and persuasion as well as the lore skills to keep the party informed. For spells the only offensive spell he would take is Dissonant Whispers, instead focusing on buffs and healing choices. With his magical secrets he grabs Find Steed to allow his companion and best friend, Yavin to be useful and a fierce addition to the party (I just buy a horse with my gold and flavour it as an elk up to that point).
More assorted pictures:
A pretty accurate image of Chyme on the roads. The character is Aramis from the BBC Musketeers, and is actually a huge inspiration for Chyme.
Yavin, Chyme's best friend and ever loyal companion. Chyme always grabs Find Steed with his magical secrets to make Yavin more useful.
Finally, a matching commision of Chyme and Yavin drawn in a chibi-esq artstyle by artist Nahamut.
Thank you for taking time to read about my character! I've been roleplaying Chyme for about seven years, in a variety of platforms and systems. I welcome any comments or criticisms you have!
Wow... That was pretty awesome. Your character sounds like he would be a lot of fun to play. I have a couple questions about him and your choice to keep him around so long, though. First, please tell us about this shady character. Is he still a fixture in Chyme's life or is he a mistake of Chyme's past? Also, why have you still used him time and time again? Have you played other characters? I will give you that he is super interesting, and his back story was great...but have you ever wanted to play another class? Have you ever made Chyme a female? Is Chyme's family still alive? I really want to know more about him. lol If you ever publish stories based off of him, let me know!

So, the shady character depends on the DM. For Chyme's mechanical background I take spy (Criminal variant) which gives me access to a contact, I often flavor that as the contact being that shady character or somebody who has worked alongside him. In most games I play Chyme will end up hassling the character and his organisation for ways to benefit the party or to help progress plot, I think it's good for a player to have access to something like that so the GM can advance stuff if the party starts getting lost.
I play Chyme frequently because I just enjoy it! I've played plenty of other characters but I find it simple to have a 'go-to' I can pull out when applying to a new game. Across all the games of 5e I've played (Discluding one shots) I've played Chyme in maybe 9 campaigns? Each lasting over three months. Honestly it's to the point where I feel that Chyme is kinda an extension of myself as a person (But with more specific skills). I've never played Chyme as a female, but have played a bunch of female characters. Actually the character I play probably the second most is a Sorceress by the name of Sora Avalon (I've done maybe 6 campaigns with her).
Chyme's mother is coming along in age and when most campaigns start is probably 5 years from death, but his father is still kicking it and swinging around as an OG Bard. For me it comes down to why I play DnD, which is the character relationships and bonds between other PC's and even NPC's. In most games I've played Chyme he's ended up in some form of relationship with another PC, and for me it just adds so much depth to a character and makes everything far more believable. Through this, it's easier having a fleshed out character so I can focus on interaction with others rather than RP'ing to discover my own character? Iunno, it's hard to put into words haha.
I've got so many stories with Chyme which is awesome, and in my head it's all part of one big cannon story that he one day shares to his own family about his life. I've played him across every level and beyond and have met some amazing characters. Whenever my Bard tells a story to the party or NPC you can know for a fact it's an event I've experienced as a player as Chyme.
That makes a lot more sense then I thought it would. I never really thought about having a go to Legacy character, though I have recently played a character that I have used before and it DID feel familiar and was very easy jumping back in Lars Van Alriddicks shoes. (Gnome Rogue...the worst kind of rogue!) My friend jumped in that game and played Lars's traveling companion Gronk (Half-orc barbarian.) So, it was nice to have that connection again. I kind of hope to play Lars in a 5e game (these were both Pathfinder games) because I feel like he was made for this system. Dan is even talking about bringing back Gronk. I find using a Legacy character intriguing. Because you're right, all your tales you get to share HAVE happened, so you're not making bs up on the fly.I would like to think Chyme could have an awesome adventure with his father one day ala Indian Jones and his pops. lol Thanks for the information and may Chyme always find good fortune! :)

A friend of mine has his own legacy character, actually a Half-Orc barbarian too that goes by the name of Ug Thak. They've had many adventures together and it's always fun starting a game with an actual connection to one other character beyond the players just agreeing that they know eachother.
Thanks for the kind words and warm wishes, I'll end up putitng my other aforementioned character (Sora) up here over the next few days. I totally recommend you pick up Lars again and go run amuck!

Hopefully, I can soon... right now I am running the campaign for our group, but it is almost over soon and my buddy is going to run the next one. It's Curse of Strahd so I don't know how well Lars would fair in that setting...lol But, for sheets and giggles I made him on my 5e character sheet app and just told my buddy I am bringing Lars back. lol He deserves to shine...even though Strahd is a campaign known for killing off its characters... I think Lars will be okay. He always finds a way to stay alive. ;) It's kind of what he does...lol He sees himself as a Folk Hero...even though he's a sham artist, takes credit for others actions and uses his little-known fame to procure his lavish lifestyle. He's not evil, just desperate for attention and glory, but nothing he'd be willing to risk his life over. He's smart, dexterous and very adventurous if he knows he won't lose. He does take chances but not before he measures the risks. The fun thing about playing a gnome, and a gnome rogue, is that they're a little bit wild/little bit crazy,
I can't wait to see your next character. I used to have a character named Sora Spiresong... he was a bard, but an evil one. lol not fun to play...well, kind of...

Chyme seems like an awesome character! I have never gotten that far into a character, because the characters I create usually get hit by some auto-killing attack... I play with EVIL DMs that like to kill characters.
Sorry to hear! Haha, I've played a few games like that and they can be awesome fun! Personally I try to stick to more story focused ones though (I'm pretty bad at combat and whatnot, haha). I'll throw up another character of mine tonight though!

Bummer :/ tell them to stop their evil ways! You could always try channeling positive energy towards them or smite them? lol
