It's not like making Evil Gods is its own reward...is it?
I think it might be, actually, but most likely I missed it too. There's also the whole "dying people" thing, of course. I guess Acererak's just really, really bored.

Acererak is a literal undead monster. Anything about him that was "human" faded long ago. His actions are not on the Risk/Reward plane anymore. Assigning agency to Acererak's actions is like giving a storm a personality. When you hit a certain point of power/disconnect it becomes less "if I do this, I get this" and more "I want to do this" and "I am curious what will happen when I do this". I hate to say it because I actually know someone with ASPD presenting as Sociopathy but that is what Acererak strikes me as. He does something because he can because it entertains him and keeps him from being bored. If you want more examples of someone on the same alignment scale/different morality, then I would suggest watching pretty much any episode of Rick & Morty, or to a lesser extent most any Archer episode featuring Kreger heavily. In fact, that kinda works, Acererak is D&D's resident mad scientist for me in my headcanon now.

"Acererak travels the planes in search of artifacts. When he finds something useful or interesting, he locks it away. Although he’s powerful enough to pursue godhood as other liches have done (Vecna being a prime example), Acererak has no interest in being a god or being worshiped. He prefers to create evil gods and unleash them on mortals and immortals who oppose him."
Creating the Evil God to unleash pain, death and destruction on a World is it's own reward for him.
He never was "human". He was a cambion before becoming an archmage, then a lich, then a demilich, then a special new kind of demilich that he invented, then whatever he is now.
There's a human in his family tree but he never was one of us.
His father was a balor (who he later imprisoned in his secret fortress where he keeps his phylactery to eternally torture him). His mother was a human apprentice of Vecna who was killed by an angry mob, and Vecna saved him from the same fate and took him on as an apprentice.

Ok, I have probably just missed this in my reading. But, to me, it seems like Acererak's plan is something like this:
1)Use Soulmonger to feed Atropal Dead Baby God Thing.
2)Atropal Dead Baby God Thing becomes Full Evil God.
3)????
4)Profit!
What part am I missing? What's Acererak's "take" in all of this? It's not like making Evil Gods is its own reward...is it?
Is he secretly carrying out some twisted maternal instinct?
I'm definitely missing something :)

From his Monster block in ToA:
Sounds like he just found away to combine two of his favorite things: creating gods, and drawing adventurers to his dungeons to kill them.

Huh.
Alrighty then.
I guess that's pretty much the whole ball of wax.
Thanks, folks!
