I am soon going to do my very fist DM session and I need some advice or help how to start this.
I still got alot to learn, and asking for help over an idea to start my group of 4 CP. I got a monk, Druid, ranger and a sorcerer. And thought their first mystery would be a ghosttown. Where some creature is pranking on the villagers, using ghostform spell on them as a prank.
So my question is, Is this an ok start for a first level quest? I assume the spel is from a want and what could be a solution for my group to bring back the people who's in ghostform?
Im thankful for any suggestion or ideas to create this idea, in hope to give my friends a good experience in my first time as a DM.
That is very original. Do add in some false clues, so the Scooby Gang get egg on their faces. They want the PC to tell their lover goodbye. The ghost want to tell their spouse, the bills have been paid. Or tell their mother "I had on clean underwear."
I looked up Ghost Form which is from the Book of the Dead and reads like is a 3E spell. Crossing the streams with different editions is a really bad idea, unless you are a gawd.
Based on the quests severity I'm assuming the party is below level 5-8, meaning that whatever is causing this should be both strong and weak at the same time, maybe one or two hags of some variety could be causing the issue depending on the party level, and to fix it I'm not quite sure what you would need but I'm sure you can figure something out, perhaps they could find a priest who lived in the town cowering in his basement, and then enlisting him to exorcise the spirits, only to realize they aren't spirits at all.
I have very little experience in different editions since this campaign i am making on my own. And using this to learn the game and also being a DM.
My idea was that it's some creature who found a wand that could do such spell nad maybe to bring people back from being ghost was to break the wand or something and using it on those he dont like or want to put in place. If you know something better that could be used for this idea i'll gladly lissen.
to be fair, the idea aint super original as i know some games who had this type of thing (Elder scrolls for ex.) Im just checking if it's possible to do in DnD and to see if i can make an interesting twist to it.
yes, I was thinking either a teenager, Gnome or halfling who happened to find such powerful item. And at first saw it as something fun but soon sees the seriousness in it as he/she dont know how to bring them back. That was my idea, so checking with those who know more if it's possible to creat something from it. As i still dont know mutch what's avaible in DnD. But hope to learn as i go.
And wand could be from some hags of some sorts that could be a continue to the mystery how he/she got it?
I know it's big of me to start with doing my own Campaign and not an already made one. But Im pretty poor and like being creative and want to learn as I go, my group who got alittle more experience than I missed a DM so i said i could do it. So im thankful for the all the help i can get to do this. :)
I once read an adventure involving a haunted house where it turned out the "ghosts" were all fakes created by local teenagers. If you don't want to worry about having a powerful item like the wand in your game, you might want to consider having something like that be the case. Also, minor illusion is a low level spell and it could be used to create some scary effects.
On the other hand, I do like your idea of the hags. Hags are generally really bad news, so they could lead to all sorts of complications in an on-going campaign. According to Volo's Guide to Monsters, hags have and use what is called "Weird Magic", so the wand you imagined could well have been made by hags which, in turn, raises some interesting questions... Do the hags want the wand back, or are they more interested in seeing what trouble will come from it being out in the world? Will they harass or threaten the player characters to get it? Will they try to persuade or trick the characters into working for them? There is so much you can do with this idea.
One other (and very wicked) thought... is the sorcerer character by any chance female? If so, perhaps the hags want to recruit her and make her part of their coven. This would work especially well, if there were only 2 hags who had been desperately trying to find a third. [Hags are more powerful in covens of three.] Oh, and you probably want to use a Green Hag for a low level party. You mentioned that you planned to start at first level. Just give your party the chance to gain a level or two before they have to face off with the wand's creator.
All in all, it sounds like a great beginning. I hope you and your players have a wonderful and memorable campaign.
