Has anyone tried letting a PC play a Death domain cleric or Oathbreaker paladin? Is it a good idea or a bad one? one thing to note though, it seems Aura of hate is a very double edged sword for a PC has anyone changed it for their PC assuming they allowed them to play an Oathbreaker?

I did use Oathbreaker in a campaign I was playing a month ago. Definitely not a bad one, but needs some balancing so it doesn't become too OP. You should make it NE if you are gonna use it as a PC so it can be something like an anti hero. If you have an NE character in your campaign, you need to consider reasons why they are teamed with others. Example : Mercenary for hire that was promised good $; Bloodthirsty fighter wanting to get more experience; An actual villain of the campaign looking to obtain a treasure but needs help eith achieving it etc.
i play as a death domain cleric in my campaign and it works extremely well for a PC class. It was a little difficult for me to set up but all in all its my favorite class to play.
They're not as tightly balanced as the accepted PC classes, but they're not so out of line that they completely unbalance the game. A smart player can just as easily dominate with a Hexblade Warlock, a Battlemaster Fighter or even a wizard who makes smart spell choices.
