I need some help in creating a merchant's manor. Our world is relatively true to life in the middle ages with some magic. This guy lives on a river and is poisoning his rivals and their workers to further his own trade empire. He committed previous crimes as well, but has never been caught. His manor is several acres, surrounded by a town that crept up around it.
So what would he have inside his walls? What might be inside his house?
One idea I had was large dog kennel inside the walls with a trapdoor inside it. The dogs protect the property obviously. The trapdoor leads to a basement. In the first basement room is a black jelly, which he feeds rivals and debtors to (hence why he has never gotten caught because there is no evidence to his murders) and the second room contains toxic mushrooms that he is growing to poison the townspeople and rivals.
Other thoughts?

I am a 40 something year old physician who DMs for a group of 40 something year old doctors. We play a hybrid game, mostly based on 2nd edition rules with some homebrew and 5E components.
I should add, the other things in the complex are his store, a dock to load and unload goods, a stable and the house itself.

Watch the classic Wes Craven movie, The People Under The Stairs.
It's a good movie and will give some inspiration. A rich couple basically have their entire house booby-trapped to keep their daughter inside and everyone else out.
It's complete with actual people under the stairs and a horde of gold, (an the couple are basically slum lords and incestuous and it's fun.. )
I think it will fit your ideas better than anything I might suggest.
