So, in my campaign, I 've been running a series of modules for my players, while peppering some homebrew stuff. Now it's gonna be 100% homebrew.
The next arc for my players, is gonna take them up to Mirabar, which is where one of the PCs is from (Dwarf Barb/Fighter). The idea is the villain of the arc is having issues with the mines, and he sends the party to deal with it (the villain has taken the PC's brothers hostage because the PC's father is in debt to the villain).
My question is, what kind of environment would a Dwarven Mine be considered? Should I use an Underdark encounter table, or is there a better option to use?
I would not rely on random tables in the first place, but assuming the problem is monsters in the first place (as opposed to, say, labor troubles, theft, or sabotage by a rival) underdark is probably more reasonable than other alternatives.
A dwarven mine would be considered underground, but not Underdark. The Underdark is a very particular underground region. A dwarven mine would likely have already cleaned out whatever rando nasties had been there previously. If something new has wandered in, that's something you should choose specifically rather than randomly. Dwarves tend to be pretty attentive to their mines and what's in them. So start by deciding what the Big Bad is, then toss in a few smaller nasties that would be related or connected to that Big Bad.
