hey, my friend and I were thinking of co-dming a oneshot for our friends, but before we started planning and thinking of stuff, I wanted to ask if y'all have any tips or ideas for co-dming. Something that I have done and have seen done in the past is for two DMs to split the duties of the game. One can write up the details of the NPCs or the towns they visit or whatever while the other makes up dungeons and adventures. We also tried a system where I would write the adventures but someone more experienced than me would run the actual fights. We both had characters in the game (to have something to do while the other was DMing) but we let the party know that we wouldn't be sharing privileged information.
To me, This is one of those ideas that’s much like BASE jumping off of the Eiffel Tower, always better to talk about than do.
I feel this way because I’ve seen co-DMing turn out supremely bad every time I’ve ever seen it. Which hasnt been a lot mind you, but still it was terrible. Almost every time the two DMs ended up helping each other out as PCs and this caused the game to crash and burn.
Splitting duties, like drawing up maps and adding stat blocks to npcs can be done with small amounts of fuss but even if it doesn’t give the coDM any actual information, that appearance is there and it can sour the mood real quick.
I would avoid coDMing as both a player and DM, the weird perceptions just get too much.
I think the best way to do this is with a large group of people. say you have 10 players for reference. each dm gets five of the players. then they play a game that would be connected. maybe a good and evil group thing. the good players do something and the evil players come and ruin it. or vice versa. the dms would talk with each other and at the very end the last fight is between the two parties . But any other way would be likely to crash and burn rather easily
