So i have some ideas so far and wanted to see if anyone could help me come up with some fun campaign ideas.
The starting point: i plan to have the group kidnapped by a cult and they get together trying to help each other escape, the party will be starting around level 2 and i plan instead of giving them starting gold and equipment they will salvage it on their escape as a session 0-3. I plan for them to hit level 3 once they are out because the sorcerer in the party will meet his patron who will assist him in his escape as part of their pact.
would like some ideas for cool cult themed adventure to carry this into.
i have plans so far for future content with two players. The eladrin divine soul sorc who is dipping into warlock his patron is a fallen angel who lost his physical form that seeks to feed on his divine essence to slowly regain his power and become a later problem. While the other player is a rogue inspired by an urban legend who tries to be this tough rogue but always backs down or fails due to lacking a spine when people get in his face like threatening them and as they come back he starts going “well you see i was joking, YEAH JOKING!”, so i plan for said urban legend to not be so false and which could be a fun never meet your heroes kinda deal.
other than that i am trying to get some ideas and would appreciate some input.
If you want ideas for an imprisoned group the opening chapter of out of the abyss is a good place to start as this begins with the party captured, all equipment lost, with a number of NPC prisoners.
If you're going to do a prison break then make it impossible for the PCs to fail in getting free. The point of a prison break is to give everyone a common goal and enemy, not to make it tedious. I had one encounter where we were in a prison for 2 table sessions (8 hours), and because we were all in separate cells in different parts of the prison it meant sitting around for 30 minutes each time as the DM switched between us. Not fun!
So yeah, make it easy to escape and don't split the party!
Yeah i plan for them to have an easier time getting out of the cells and more of working together to get out of the place like a “bond forged by escaping together” kinda deal.
Out of the Abyss gets around this by having the Drow Prison guards use the characters to perform various tasks and actions, the use of NPC's is good, when I have run Out of the Abyss (run it 3 times now) I always have an NPC the party have got most attached to be executed as an example to the rest of the prisoners for some infraction, on 2 occasions they have taken the blame for something the characters have done trying to plot the escape.
In out of the Abyss there are multiple ways the players can creatively try and escape but there is also a story between some of the Drow where one sees a prison break as being a way to bring shame on another, he sets things up with the intention of then chasing the prisoners down and getting the glory for this. So make sure you build up an option to give the characters a way out if they seem to have run out of ideas, of the 3 times I have run it the offer was made twice, and on one of those they went that route.
Finally have a clear idea in your head of what to do if the characters escape without all their equipment, again Out of the Abyss this is a very strong possibility, so how will your Warlock get a focus, or your rogue a knife?
Fial point, ALWAYS tell your players how you intend to start the adventure. They need to be aware that they will be starting out with nothing to hand. Also remember a Wizard wont be able to change their spells until they get access to a spell book again.
I actually wanted to do a cult using a mirror pocket dimension of the city so after the escape they can solve the kidnappings. I have tashas and want to use the mirror effect on the city from it.
i also plan for the players patron he makes a pact with help in minor ways whether hints or a cast of darkness for a get away or something.
plan for the plot twist to be this patron he gains will be the one this cult is trying to serve while he wants nothing to do with them but can’t escape his prison without a host to regain his own strength.
