Does the Crush ability automatically attach? Unlike other abilities that say on a successful hit, this one reads like it just happens automatically before it rolls the attack. I'm I reading this right?
"The darkmantle attaches to the target If the target is Medium or smaller and the darkmantle has advantage on the attack roll, it attaches by engulfing the target's head, and the target is also blinded and unable to breathe while the darkmantle is attached in this way."
To clarify, there are 2 parts in the text where the ''attach' happens:
"Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage, and the darkmantle attaches to the target."
AND
" If the target is Medium or smaller and the darkmantle has advantage on the attack roll, it attaches by engulfing the target’s head,"
I'm asking about the 2nd one, and if what its saying is that with advantage (from it's darkness or some other source) it automatically happens.

Since the attaching sentence is immediately after the damage, which is implied on a hit, the Darkmantle does have to hit with the attack to attach.

The wording on this part really seems to imply that the attack gets advantage: "If the target is Medium or smaller and the darkmantle has advantage on the attack roll" It's not "if the target is engulfed it has advantage on attacks", it just the darkmantle has advantage on the attack roll, or it automatically happens if it has advantage.
The wording states that if the attack that hits has advantage the attachment point is the head, and the blinded condition and suffocation are the result. The attack itself, if successful does score the attachment, and if attached, has advantage on subsequent attacks.
Of course, you are free to omit the advantage requirement for the attachment to be the target's head if the desired effect doesn't match up with what you want.

There are 2 parts in the text where the engulf happens:

AND
" If the target is Medium or smaller and the darkmantle has advantage on the attack roll, it attaches by engulfing the target’s head,"
If I'm not mistaken the 2nd doesn't require a successful attack, it just needs the size and to have advantage

What Kaavel is saying is that there are two different types of "engulfing" it does
If it hits on a regular attack, it attaches itself to some other body part like your arm and does its normal Crush attack
If it hits on an attack with advantage, it attaches itself to your head and the additional conditions like blinded apply
Basically it grabs you with the first attack (giving it advantage), and then makes its way up to your head on the next hit

It's worded really poorly
