Hey everyone! First time creating a thread, but long time lurking around for ideas, lol.
Wanted to drum up some ideas to leaf through while looking into creating a one-shot for a father and his 10 year old daughter whose been begging him to play D&D, lol.
Has anyone done something similar? What sort of antics did your young players get up to? Suggestions on monsters, traps, trials and tribulations, quest hooks, and such would be welcome! I'd welcome design advice for creating a one-shot as well since I've been more of the 'episodic adventures build a campaign' kinda DM, lol.
I'm hoping to keep things light hearted. I have this idea of a Studio Ghibli-style sort of whimsy. There is peril and danger, but the world is light, cheery, and more about young heroes and heroines overcoming personal challenges.
I don't think you need to modify anything for a ten year old player, other than avoiding anything that seems too gory or adult in theme. I wouldn't make it whimsical unless you're sure that's what the players want; ten year olds love Marvel movies and Harry Potter right?
Mostly I'd modify by having no expectation of roleplay (it can be hard for young players to feel comfortable RP'ing) but be ready to launch into it if she's going for it, and ensure that everything is very very well sign-posted. Maybe even a railroad.
