So I’m about to send my party to a carnival that is normal by day and evil and corrupted by night (like a mix of the Carnival from Van Richten’s and Witchlight I guess), and I’m going to include different shows, games, sideshows, etc. I’d also like to include a fortune teller who uses the tarokka deck, but there’s nothing really written about the cards outside of their meaning in Strahd. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what certain cards could mean or a cool way to do it without looking like I stacked the deck? I’d even be willing to rewrite my story a little based on what cards came up, that way whatever fortunes they get are actually true.
If done well, the "fortune" that is given to the PC might be vague and general enough to mean any number of things. It's up to the player to make inferences to in-game details to draw an "accurate" picture of the events being fortold. The meanings of the cards are entirely subjective and are intended to be open to interpretation. Allow the player to make the connections required to "fortell the future", and then maybe you can refer back to the fortune teller at points or moments in the game that correlate to the reading to reinforce the narrative that you have intended for them to receive.
Mists: Something unexpected or mysterious that can't be avoided; a great quest or journey that will try one's spirit.
This can be interpreted as anything that will try someone's resolve and is "unavoidable". As light hearted example, this could mean that you have to go to work, at your IRL job. Depending on the workplace, this could be an unavoidable quest that will try your spirit. Most likely it might mean the commute.
