my players are on a quest and as player's do they have gone off course and now im trying to make a plan i have the idea but im having a brain fart on the execution of it. my players saved a town and the town has had most of everything taken from it food and money and supplies so the players got a idea to go to the closest city and get a cart and buy supplies and come back and sell the supplies to the town. Before they leave they are asking the mayor for papers to help them get help. when they get there they meet a shady dealer that will help them if they help him investigate and inevitably take down a rival supply company that is under selling all other company's. they are lvl 3 i want cranium rats swarm to be the end boss for this fight and if they ever come back for another side quest here its gonna turn into mind flayers trying to take the city over but that's not for this part. il tell you the parts i have and plz help fill in the blanks it gets weird the arrive at the guy he says the stuff about the company and sends them somewhere they end up getting shrank down to very tiny where a cranium rat is huge to them and spiders are large they have to get thru a ware house where the warehouse workers are taken over by intellect devours but the. id like the warehouse to be like a dungeon where in different parts are different encounters like apprentice wizards making ash zombies but im gonna call them ash golems , darklings as assassins hired by the company, in the ally there is a bunch of animated things like armor knife sword books broom giant spider when they are tiny and a giant cranium rat for when they are tiny that im using a guardian wolf stats if this makes any sence to you plz help
I feel like you have a lot of really cool ideas but are struggling a bit with tying them together.
Why not have an ally shrink them so they can escape the evil guy? Maybe introduce the bad guy as something they obviously can't fight at level 3? A crazy old mage who hates the bad guy shrinks them so they can escape.
Make it obvious that they is a rat hole they could dive down to escape. Now your dungeon crawl is the players following the rat's tunnels, fighting spiders, Ash golems and the cranium rats themselves. All the while they are wondering when the spell will wear off and if they will survive enlarging when there isn't space. Eventually they make their way down into the sewers and return to normal size.
Meanwhile the shady guy has instructed his assassins to find the party and they are combing the sewers for them. When they climb out of the sewer they emerge in a run down home and immediately the items start attacking them. They are like a burglar alarm for the crazy old mage who saved them before. He returns and stops it. The the mage can give the party the exposition for the next stage of the campaign.
You could even have the crazy guy be a conspiracy theories nut who goes on about when he was abducted by aliens, the giant crocodiles in the sewers and of course that mind flayers have seized control of the city. Later on they'll be like woah he was right about the mind flayers, what if there are aliens?
I think all of your ideas are great but you need a way to tie it all together.
Perhaps the rats in the swarm could be hiding in a sewer system and the players need to take serious risks to reach their location, the reason your players might be searching for them is because they are rumored to be the keeper of all the city´s secrets and the party is searching for a way to contact and receive information or slander that would ruin the rival companies reputation.
The could often be known to trade one secret for another, this could backfire on the party later if they say something crucially important to the rats that the elderbrain learns of and then uses against them.
If they choose to fight the creature later it could drop to a certain number of hitpoints before it escapes down the tunnels that are too small for the average humanoid to fit through.
The warehouse could be connected as a secret layer for the rats and mindflayers.
