I'm writing a campaign in which the PCs will be following a trail left by a haywire magic item that's been stolen from the Feywild. The item is essentially a power hub that draws magic into the area around it and focusses it; it worked perfectly in the Feywild where, in my campaign, the magic is more... solid? but the magic in the Material Plane is sort of thinner, like the air at high elevation, and this object wasn't built for these conditions, so weird stuff is happening.
It can do stuff like animate plants and raise the dead, but I wanna think of some ideas of encounters the players can have, combat or non-combat, that can sort of give them hints about what this object is all about. My first thoughts are like, mild stuff, like a trail overgrown with Spike Growth or interacting with an animal that's acting Weirdly Sentient ( i know that's not the right word, plenty of animals are sentient but you know what i mean ghjdfsgk)
Encounters can be balanced for any level, i'll just end up making multiple tables later on if the search continues long enough :)
There are a few things you can look to for inspiration. The Wild Magic Table is a good place to start - those effects are caused by the item Feywild Shard, so are explicitly tied to the Fey.
Faerzress, described in Out of the Abyss, could also be easily reflavoured to the Feywild, mechanically keeping it the same.
The Magical phenomena listed in Tasha’s also could be useful.
You could keep it to one school of magic too or have it be from a random school of magic depending on the conditions. Then go randomly from there. You could potentially have a lot of different scenarios with it.

I didn’t know about this, but this is perfect for impromptu lair actions when fights are taking place near the item, this awesome!
edit: the Unraveling Magic effects table is great for lair actions. The Magical Phenomena are GREAT for worldbuilding though, as well as lingering trails. Thanks for pointing me to it :D
